“The future belongs to those who give the next generation reason for hope.”

-Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Son Gohan, the Golden Fighter.

Ultraman Zero, the Ultra Zero Mantle.

Confident, proud, and heroic; These two are the sons of the universe’s greatest fighters; Goku and Ultraseven, and the first of the next generation of heroes, continuing the legacy of the Saiyans and the New Generation of Ultras. Only these two rose to the occasion against their most formidable foes, Cell and Ultraman Belial, but not without the training of a father’s friend that molded them into protectors of the earth and the universe, attaining legendary transformations along the way that tapped into their heritage.

They are some of the most iconic humanoid alien warriors across their long-running Japanese franchises, honing martial arts and special beam attacks and being the pinnacle of heroism, peace, and justice. And now, it's time to see who is the zero, and who is the hero. Will the Beast emerge victorious, or will the Son of Seven’s victory be limitless? Their legacies shall shine in this DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Start…

For Son Gohan, we will be looking at the various stories Dragon Ball has to offer. That's the original manga from Akira Toriyama, the anime, Toyotaro’s Dragon Ball Super Manga, the Dragon Ball Super anime and the movies like Broly and Super Hero. We also will be taking into account feats from Toei as it's merely an extension of Akira Toriyama's vision for the series, and he is on record saying that Dragon Ball is both the anime and the manga, with it still being significant to the story the same way as the manga is.

On Ultraman Zero’s side, it’ll be pretty similar. We will be looking at the entire Ultraman franchise, with the primary focus being all 35 shows from the original Ultraman in 1966 all the way to 2025’s Ultraman Omega, which is still ongoing at the time of this blog's release. Of course, we’ll also be looking at all of the canon movies like the Ultraman Cosmos trilogy to the most recent releases in the Reiwa era, along with looking at slightly more dubious entries like Ultraman Story for more info despite their canonicity being shaky. For this blog, we also examined official resources for additional information like Tsuburaya’s official websites, stage shows and guidebooks.

With all that out of the way, let's get into the showdown you all came here for!

Background

Gohan

“Is that all you've got...? Okay then. Guess it's my turn.”

Brave, adventurous, tenacious; these are just a few words used to describe Son Goku. Going from a simple monkey boy living in the mountains, to saving the world from the Demon King Piccolo, and his son Piccolo Jr. Goku's endless drive pushed him to reach a power that made him the world champion and the strongest under the heavens. After his victory, Goku would go on to marry Chi-Chi and they would live in the mountains for five years until reuniting with their friends. A reunion that would have Goku reveal his and Chi-Chi's child, Son Gohan, named after the man who raised him.

Even more shocking to Goku’s friends than him having a child, was Gohan’s shy timid nature. The complete opposite of his father. Gohan had no desire for fighting, but instead wanted to become a great scholar. The reunion was cut short as Goku's evil alien brother Raditz appeared, and revealed Goku and Gohan's heritage. Goku was a Saiyan, a warrior race from the planet Vegeta. Raditz then kidnapped Gohan in an ultimatum for Goku to join his side and destroy the planet. Goku and Piccolo Jr. (now going by just Piccolo) would form an uneasy alliance to defeat this foreign foe. Their combined power still wasn't enough to defeat the alien warrior. Gohan would witness his father being brutalized by Raditz, causing Gohan to snap and achieve a power eclipsing even his father, and would severely wound Raditz. This would weaken Raditz enough, so Piccolo would get the final blow, but not without sacrifice. Goku would pass on to the next world and Raditz would reveal two more Saiyans are on the way.

Piccolo would kidnap Gohan and make him partake in grueling training in order to awaken his dormant power. Gohan would be put through the ringer, but would start to acclimate and improve as a fighter. More importantly, Piccolo would adjust to having someone treat him with kindness and the pair would form an unlikely bond.  A bond that would change the former Demon King's heart and would cause him to sacrifice himself for Gohan when the Saiyans finally arrived. Goku would be resurrected, and with the remaining Z-Fighters, defeat the Saiyans. Most of them would be killed however, so Krillin would formulate a plan to go to Namek (the native homeworld of Namekians like Piccolo) and use their Dragon Balls.

This trip would cause Gohan to see and witness even more death and destruction, as the self-titled Emperor of the Universe, Frieza would also be searching for the Dragon Balls. On Namek, Gohan would witness his father achieve the legendary Super Saiyan status after Frieza murdered Krillin. They would return to Earth and resurrect the Z-Fighters. Peace wouldn't last long however, a warrior from the future named Trunks brought a dire message. Androids created by Dr. Gero would attack in three years with power they hadn't seen before. Gohan and the Z-Fighters would prepare for the androids, but even with the warning, their power wasn't enough to defeat the machines. That wasn't the worst news however, Trunks wasn't aware of Dr. Gero's greatest technological terror, the biomechanical android known as Cell.

As Cell grew in power, Goku realized that Gohan's latent power was the only thing capable of stopping Cell from destroying the world. Goku and Gohan would train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in which Gohan would become a Super Saiyan. Father and Son would train to be in peak condition for the Cell Games, a mock tournament for Cell to gloat to the world of his power. Goku would fail to best Cell, and would entrust the fate of the world to his son. Gohan's inner turmoil however prevented him from harnessing his true power, doubt of his own capabilities mixed with fear of what he could do. Android 16 would motivate Gohan to let go of fear, telling him it's not a sin to fight for what is right. 16's words and sacrifice would cause Gohan to accept his power and access Super Saiyan 2. This new found power made Gohan cocky, however (he was only like ten, to be fair), and Cell was able to initiate his self-destruction. Goku would sacrifice himself again, telling Gohan he's proud of him and teleporting Cell and himself away. This wouldn't be the end as Cell survived! More powerful than ever, he and Gohan would have one final clash. With some post mortem motivation from his father, Gohan was victorious.

Years would pass and while Goku chose to stay in the other world, Gohan was finally able to enjoy peace. He had a little brother named Goten which he could look after. He would become a tokusatsu inspired hero named Great Saiyaman to kill time. He would also meet Videl Satan, daughter of Hercule Satan, the man who took credit for defeating Cell. Despite a rough start, they would form a relationship. Things were going well until the Supreme Kai would arrive and warn of an entity named Majin Buu. Gohan, his recently resurrected father, and the Z-Fighters would all fail to defeat Buu. Gohan would get a power boost by the Elder Kai and unlock the Ultimate Form. Arrogance would be Gohan’s downfall again, as Buu was able to absorb more power and defeat Gohan, only being stopped by Goku, Vegeta, and Hercule Satan.

With his father back, Gohan would slack off on his training. Instead focusing on his education. He would start a family with Videl, having a daughter named Pan. While Goku was achieving the power of the gods, Gohan enjoyed being a simple family man. Until a resurrected Frieza came to Earth and humiliated Gohan while only in his first form. Nearly losing everything because of his complacency, this would be a wake up call for Gohan to grow stronger. He would compete in the T.O.P to save his universe, where he would decide to continue his path as an earthling, not a Saiyan.

A restored Red Ribbon Army would reveal themselves by attacking Piccolo with their new android Gamma 2 (hey, he looks familiar) and kidnap Pan. Gohan and Piccolo would defeat Gamma 1 and 2, but the army had one last trick up its sleeve, Cell Max. An incomplete, kaiju-sized imitation of the original. Gohan, seeing his friends and family being nearly killed by Cell yet again, activated his newest power up: Beast Gohan. With this new power, he defeated Cell Max and vowed to keep up his training in case another threat emerged, for the sake of his loved ones.

Son Gohan never had his father's desire for battle, but he's found his own motivation to break his limits time and again, the desire to protect all those he cares about.

Ultraman Zero

"You're 20,000 years too early to beat me!"

Daring, strict, compassionate; just a select few ways to describe the legendary Crimson Fighter, Ultraseven. A soldier from the far-off Nebula M78 who took up the role of de facto defender of Earth, Seven would combat numerous aliens and kaiju alike who threatened humanity, becoming the beloved sixth member of the Ultra Guard defense team. Through his time spent among humanity and interacting with his teammates in UG, Seven quickly came to love the planet, and learned just what it means to be human. However, his time was unfortunately cut short. Due to amassing injuries and draining energy, Seven was forced to leave the Earth, parting ways with humanity (albeit only for a time) and letting other Ultras come to take his place. In-between it all, in the quieter moments, Seven lived a happy life. He was married, respected, and even had a son, named Zero.

However, for one reason or another, the young Zero never discovered the truth of his heritage and grew up with some ultra spunk and attitude. This led him down some dark paths, not too different from that of a former Ultra, one who sacrificed everything for the sake of power; Belial. Long ago, Belial was a skilled warrior and integral force against evil. However, it wasn’t long before he became consumed by his pride and a lust for power. He attempted to leech energy from the mighty Plasma Spark, the Land of Light’s source of power and the root of energy for all Ultra-kind. Though successful, he was consumed and hurt by the Spark, subsequently locked away for his actions and used as a cautionary tale to turn away any who sought the same unworthy gain. Unfortunately, not everyone took heed of these prescient warnings, and sadly… one of them was Zero. Inexperienced and brash, poor Zero was seduced by the overwhelming power of the Plasma Spark and, in a critical moment of weakness, the young Ultra tried to take its power for himself. Fortunately, he was stopped by the Ultra Brothers, including Seven, who seemed awfully torn by the situation. Why did the usually unshakeable Ultra seem so affected? Well, unbeknownst to the disgraced Zero, he was staring his own father straight in the face. In a struggle greater than any Ultra fight, Seven was forced to exile his own boy from the Land of Light for his indiscretion. Thus, Zero was stuck on the barren planet K76, made to wear restrictive Tector Gear and set to be trained and rehabilitated by the Leo brothers: Ultraman Leo and Astra. Zero would spend years working with the duo to improve, slowly mastering his powers and strength to hopefully one day use them for good. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before the up-and-coming Ultra had the chance he needed to show that he was ready. During a sparring match with Leo, a hapless Pigmon wandered onto the battlefield. With a surge of good in his heart, Zero saved the poor monster, finally proving that he valued the preservation of life above all things; the sign of a true Ultra Warrior.

Now freed from his exile and informed of his father’s identity, Zero was summoned to the Monster Graveyard, where a ragtag team of Ultras, humans, kaiju, and the remnants of the Ultra Brothers had launched a last ditch assault against Belial. The villain had escaped his imprisonment, stealing the Plasma Spark and freezing nearly every Ultra, leaving the planet dead and dark. Having amassed insurmountable power and a staggering army of 100 ravenous kaiju at his beck and call, the scattered heroes were the universe’s only hope. Unfortunately, Zero arrived just too late to assist them, and he watched as Seven was downed in combat against the evil Ultra. Holding his dying father in his arms, Seven told Zero how happy he was to see his son all grown up, before passing away. With rage in his heart and nothing left to hold him back, Zero took on Belial, effortlessly destroying his army and pushing the villain to the brink of defeat. Despite this, even his incredible power faltered against his foe’s trump card: the gargantuan mega-monster, Belyudra. However, the stolen Plasma Spark suddenly reached out, its sacred light infusing Zero with power unlike any the Ultras had seen. With this newfound strength, Zero worked with the other heroes to vanquish Belyudra, finally defeating Belial and saving the day. Soon after, Ultraseven was revived, and father and son were able to properly reconcile, free to fight together at last. Just in time, too. The Land of Light is no stranger to conflict, and with Zero now at the forefront of the fight, the Ultras were ready to face it all.

Over the next 15 years, Zero would go on many adventures, facing enemies new and old along the way. He was banished to another dimension, fought an evil robot clone of himself, returned to K76 for further training with Leo, and even landed in Times Square! And we can’t forget his many other encounters with Belial, who had inarguably become the hero’s arch nemesis. Belial and Zero fought in an alternate universe, duelled in the latter’s mindscape, and Belial even temporarily possessed his body to become Zero Darkness. Though Zero ultimately wouldn’t be the one to rid the universe of Belial’s terror (with that honor later going to the evildoer’s own son, Ultraman Geed), he would continue the fight against equally formidable foes, and continues to do so to this day, most recently training to prepare for the arrival of the “Lord” of the Absolutians. From protecting Earth against alien invasions and kaiju attacks like his father before him, to helping combat the Absolutians and their absolute conspiracy, to inspiring and mentoring a new generation of Ultra Warriors who will defend the future, there is no doubt that Zero is worthy of the title of Ultraman. Understanding the danger of power without justice, he will never rest until no darkness remains in a universe so full of light. If you’re ever in danger and things seem dire, if hope is scarce and despair seems inescapable, don’t cower in fear. Instead, look to the stars, because you will see a bright light in the Western sky, illuminating the infinite universe we call home. Watch for that light and cling to hope, because the Ultraman known as Zero will never let anyone be without it. Despite holding the power to destroy and being tempted by darkness, Zero will always go beyond in his mission to bring peace and hope to all beings across the cosmos. Hope is what fuels the good, after all. And hope, much like Zero himself, has no limits.

Experience & Skill

                          Gohan

As the son of one of the most prolific martial artists in all of fiction, Gohan is obviously no slouch when it comes to experience and skill. Fighting in life-or-death combat since he was 4 years old, Gohan has over 2 decades of experience to pull from fighting and defeating countless opponents who are far more experienced than him. Having trained under both his father and Piccolo, while Gohan doesn’t have an exact fighting style one can pin down, Gohan combines attributes of both his father and Piccolo’s martial arts teachings and Ki Techniques, although he is usually more inclined towards using what was instilled to him by Piccolo such as the Masenko.

Despite his noted uncomfortability with combat, Gohan is more than ready to fight whenever he sees it necessary, and has become far more inclined over the years to see it not as a tool only used when necessary but as something he can use to express himself and bond with people like his father. Gohan has fought a massive variety of opponents, ranging from long-lived space tyrants such as Frieza, the perfect bio-android Cell, and even the mystical Majin Buu. Most of all, while not 1 to 1 with his father’s level of experience or skill, Gohan is able to keep up with Goku without much issue even all the way into Super Hero. Obviously impressive considering Goku is perhaps the single greatest martial artist in the entire multiverse, keeping up with characters ranging from the incredibly long lived deity Beerus to the over 1,000 year old assassin Hit, who across his millennium of assassin work had never failed a single assassination attempt.

However, while he is no slouch in either aspect, Gohan’s most noted attribute in combat isn’t his skill or experience, but rather his intelligence. While Gohan has had his…fumbles, he is very much still one of Universe 7’s smartest fighters, with his intelligence being best shown during the Tournament of Power, where he was named Universe 7’s captain by Goku himself. Whether it be uppercutting Botamo to get past his body’s ability to nullify physical force, understanding and cooperating with Frieza’s strategy to take out Frost, allowing himself to take damage to defeat a combatant capable of separating his energy from his body, or even help Frieza come up with the plan to knock out Dyspo via a laser cage match, many of Gohan’s ringouts during the tournament were thanks to his quick-thinking.

In conclusion, while he definitely has a tendency to let himself get rusty over the years and is still more of a martial pacifist than a battle-hungry Saiyan, Gohan is undoubtedly one of the multiverse’s most skilled and respected fighters.

Ultraman Zero

Despite being a considerably young Ultra compared to most of the other warriors in the Land of Light, Zero has plenty of skill and experience on his side that lets him keep up with the best of the best, both Ultras and kaiju alike. At a young age before his banishment to planet K76 where Ultras go to train, Zero was considered to have unlimited potential which was true up until his training was finished and he was sent by Ultraman King to stop Ultraman Belial's rampage. Said training was led by the masters of Space Martial Arts: Ultraman Leo and Astra.

These brothers from planet L77 are among the most skilled Ultras of all time, with Leo in particular honing his abilities during his time on Earth training under Zero's father, Ultraseven. While on Earth, Leo consistently trained in karate, even learning from someone who was so proficient at it that it allowed them to fight human sized aliens. Leo is also skilled enough to easily defeat Ultraman Mebius, who was trained by Ultraman Taro and his physical ability is beyond other Ultras, like Ultraman Ribut, who can use pressure point attacks. Naturally the same goes for his brother Astra, who is Leo's equal which we see in multiple fights like when they took on Absolute Tartarus together and overwhelmed him with their Space Martial Arts

The brothers’ training was very intense and strict, which was perfect for helping the hotheaded Zero regain his Ultra warrior spirit and honing his technique. During his sparring sessions with the brothers, they made him wear the restrictive Tector Gear, which limited his power and movements drastically, and despite this, he was still able to get the upper hand on them more than once. Ultra warriors need to develop their own fighting styles in order to grow, and for Zero, his is a speedy fighting style which lets him overwhelm his opponents, including warriors like Juda Spectre. Zero is skilled enough to spar Ultraman Regulos, who uses the Cosmo Beast Style, which is the most powerful martial art in Ultraman. Zero is also shown sparring with Astra, who knows the Cosmo Beast Style just like Regulos. It’s also worth mentioning that one of Zero’s pupils: Z inherits his master’s skill as well as Seven and Leo’s usage of Space Martial Arts, which makes him much more skilled than he is otherwise while using his Alpha Edge form

Zero is no stranger to having plenty of battle experience either. He’s traveled from universe to universe and been put in many different battles against a wide variety of foes from a monster army, multiple robot replicas of the Ultra Brothers which he squared off against over a period of 2 weeks, fellow hotheaded aliens like his friend Glenfire to evil Ultras like Belial and Tregear. Despite being sealed for thousands of years, Belial's skill remained one of the best in the multiverse, having fought in the Ultimate Wars alongside Ultraman Ken and being capable of defeating the entire Land of Light on his own not once, but twice including the likes of Father of Ultra (Ken), the Ultra Brothers and others like the USA Ultras, the duo of Ultraman Neos and Ultraseven 21, and Ultraman Xenon.

Equipment

Gohan

Weighted Clothing

Gohan has a set of Weighted Demon Clothes similar to Piccolo, since Piccolo was the one who gave him the clothing. Gohan wore these during the Cell Games, and would gain a new set in Superhero.

Glasses

(Nerd!!!!)

Due to bad eyesight, Gohan wears glasses to help him see. This sight issue is taken care of with various transformations, so whenever he does transform he makes sure to take these off to avoid destroying them… yet he still throws them to the ground anyways.

Flying Nimbus

A trusted companion of the Son family, the Nimbus Cloud can only be flown by those of a pure heart. Gohan rode this with his father when he was a child, and even used it after Goku’s death when he was going to high school. With it, Gohan can summon it with a loud call and use it in battle.

Senzu Beans

Senzu Beans are mystical beans grown by Korin in Korin’s Tower. When eaten, it restores the person’s health and physical condition is restored almost instantly to their natural peak. Take enough at once and apparently they can restore limbs. However, supply is limited, as it takes time to grow even a single Senzu Bean. Typically only several are held by the Z-Fighters at any given point.

Great Saiyaman Watch

This watch, with a press of a button, turns Gohan instantly into the Great Saiyaman. Like the costume, it was designed by Bulma to help Gohan hide his identity while helping people and fighting crime.

Artificial Saiyan Tail

In the videogame Kakarot, Gohan has a prosthetic tail modeled after his original tail, similar to the ones Bulma made for Goku. It does not let him turn into an Oozaru but he can use it for fishing!

Sword

During his training before the arrival of the Saiyans, Piccolo created a sword for him to help him train.

Ultraman Zero

Tector Gear

As part of his training with the Leo brothers, Zero was fitted with the Tector Gear which restricts his movements and limits his power. When he returned to K76 to train to overcome Absolute Tartarus, he was given another set of it by his father.

Ultimate Bracelet

Originally the Ultra Zero Bracelet, this unique Ultra Bracelet was given to Zero by his father before he embarked on a journey into another universe, with the intention that it would provide him with enough energy to transform several times, even while a universe away from the Land of Light’s Plasma Spark. After Ultraman Noa saved Zero and upgraded the bracelet, it has remained with him on all of his adventures.

It sits on Zero’s left arm and, aside from providing him with extra energy, can act as a wayfinder to help tether him to the Land of Light. It also acts as a storage space for the Ultimate Aegis armor which can be used as a shield and is used to transform him into “Ultimate Zero” (more on this form later). It also contains the Ultra Zero Eye, Ultra Zero Lance, and the Ultra Zero Defender. The bracelet also allows Zero to clone himself, splitting into two identical versions of himself. The two Zeros can act independently of one another, and access his different forms.

Ultra Zero Eye

Should an Ultra bond themselves with a human host, in order to access their original forms, they must make use of transformation items. Every Ultra Warrior worth their Spacium needs one, and Zero’s is the totally radical Ultra Zero Eye, a pair of glasses similar to the classic Ultra Eye utilized by his father. Though the main purpose of the Eye is to let Zero transform, it can be folded in half and used as a gun that fires laser bolts in quick succession, usually as a method of protection should the user be in danger before getting the chance to transform. If his host is in danger, Zero can also project himself out of the Eye to protect them from harm at his own expense.

Ultra Zero Lance

A deadly weapon for close quarters, the Ultra Zero Lance is a less appreciated part of Zero’s arsenal. Zero is proficient with the weapon to the point where he can evenly duel Ultraman Jack who is trained in kick boxing while he was on Earth as Hideki Go, and the lance is capable of easily destroying multiple ships in Belial's fleet.

Ultra Zero Defender

The Ultra Zero Lance can change modes depending on the situation Zero finds himself in. When Zero needs to defend himself or something else like a helpless Pigmon, he can use the Ultra Zero Defender, which is a massive shield that can protect against powerful attacks like those from Sly, the Alien Mefilas.

Zero Sluggers

Inherited from his father, Zero has two Sluggers on his head known as the Zero Sluggers. Like his father’s iconic Eye Slugger, these weapons rest on top of Zero’s head when not in use. However, when Zero wants to finish an opponent off in stylish fashion, he can hurl the blades at high speeds to cut down enemies or catch them off guard. They are also capable of acting as mirror-like substances, used to reflect Villainous and Tyrant’s attacks. In addition to being efficient at a distance they also make deadly weapons up close as Zero can dual wield them or combine them into a Zero Twin Sword, which can also be thrown like a giant boomerang and energized into a powerful Plasma Spark Slash. Zero can also place them on his chest and fire out a massive blast of energy called the Zero Twin Shoot. (BREAST FIRE!!)

Ultra Zero Mantle

OH MY GOD HE'S SO GOD! DAMN! COOL!

The Ultra Zero Mantle is a cool as hell cape given to him by Leo. Besides making Zero look even more badass than he already does, the cape also acts as a means of protection from attacks much like other, similar Ultra Mantles like those worn by the Ultra Brothers or Father and Mother of Ultra.

Abilities

Gohan

Hybrid Saiyan Physiology

As the first ever Hybrid Saiyan born in Dragon Ball, Gohan’s physiology is unique even by the standards of traditional pure-blooded Saiyans. Like his fellow pure-blooded Saiyans, Gohan is capable of the standard tools their species has such as flight, Ki Control, absurdly high strength, stamina, speed, and more. Furthermore, all Saiyans possess something known as Zenkai Boosts, a trait unique to Saiyans in Dragon Ball that causes them to gain absurd boosts in strength when near and or on the verge of death.

Examples of Zenkai Boosts in Dragon Ball can be found in almost every corner of the franchise once you reach the Namek Saga, but major ones include:

It should be noted with these examples in particular however that all 3 characters mentioned were well and truly on the verge of death, and only survived and took advantage of the Zenkai Boost either via outside help in Vegeta and Goku’s cases, or an inherent ability every Saiyan lacks like Cell’s absurd regeneration. It should be further noted that in the Super Manga’s Goku Black arc, Zenkai Boosts have been theorized to essentially stagnate after a certain point, although the validity of this statement can very easily be brought into question by various arcs taking place after it.

However, all of this is standard Saiyan physiology, so what makes Hybrid Saiyans in general so special? The answer…is potential, man. Hybrid Saiyans are noted plenty of times throughout the series for their ridiculous potential, and have just as many examples of such to back it up. Usually brought on by being pushed to the brink emotionally, Hybrid Saiyans are capable of absurd power jumps that defy all logic, with the most recent example being found in Gohan himself during Super Hero. In the span of at most a few hours, Gohan went from being comparable to SSB-level opponents, to being equal to Goku’s Ultra Instinct.

Ki Control

In the world of Dragon Ball, Ki is a latent energy that exists inside every living being, primarily focused in the center of one’s body, and is the primary power source of almost every character throughout the entire franchise. Ki in Dragon Ball is composed of three main elements, those being: Genki (Vigor), Yūki (Courage), and Shōki (Right-Mindedness). Genki is essentially the life force of all beings, ranging from plants to animals to even the atmosphere itself, and according to Vegeta in the Moro Arc, is equal to/synonymous with one’s very soul. Yūki and Shōki in comparison are less tangible and literal than one’s life force, and more-so are personifications of courage and a stable mental state.

Through proper training and understanding, one is capable of drawing Ki out of their body for a variety of purposes, including but not limited to: flight, enhancing one’s physical abilities, performing energy attacks, sensing the Ki of others, telepathy, mindreading, telekinesis, and healing.

Auras

What would a Dragon Ball character be without aura? Double meaning aside, auras in Dragon Ball have a surprising amount of applications despite generally being seen as nothing more than one’s Ki leaking out of their body. Across different characters throughout the franchise, various auras have been shown to be capable of many different abilities such as protecting the user from poisons, vaporizing weaker foes, creating massive storms and shockwaves, replicating forces of nature such as heat, and even manifesting as barriers to protect the user from harm.

Martial Arts Techniques

Through his training and decades of experience, Gohan has learned many different fighting techniques. Due to basically all of these just being traditional combos without any major unique abilities tied to them, as well as not wishing to make this blog even longer, we will only be listing a select few here. If you would like to see a list of every individual attack however, you can find them in a document here.

Ki Techniques

A staple of basically every Dragon Ball character, with Gohan being no exception. Via their ability to harness and utilize Ki, characters in the world of Dragon Ball can use this to launch devastating attacks of pure energy capable of obliterating anything in its path, ranging from Moons, Planets, to entire Solar Systems. Gohan himself has a wide variety of Ki Techniques he’s used throughout the years, and while we won’t be listing every single variation or minor Ki attack in this blog, like his Martial Arts Techniques, you can find a document listing basically every single version of every attack listed here.

In terms of notable techniques Gohan has used, they are as follows:

Fourth Wall Breaking

While not an actual ability that should be brought up whatsoever in any kind of VS Debate, certain Dragon Ball characters have been seen being able to interact with the 4th Wall, Gohan being no exception! Whether it be the above joke about revealing his identity or introducing the reader to the concept of Krillin having hair. Again, this is nothing that should actually be brought up seriously, but is a fun thing to document especially considering Dragon Ball’s roots in Dr. Slump.

Resistances

Ultraman Zero

Emerium Slash

One of Zero’s most iconic attacks is his Emerium Slash, a technique which functions similarly to his father’s Emerium Beam. Zero fires out a powerful beam of Emerium energy from his Beam Lamp, which is able to knock an opponent unconscious or rapidly destroy the atomic structure of the enemy’s body. He can also fire it as energy bullets as shown in his battle with Alien Nackle and Black King.

Wide Zero Shot

Another technique inherited from his father, Zero charges his energy using a Space Martial Arts stance before bringing his arms together to form an L and firing a powerful yellow beam at his enemies. In the Ginga S movie he is capable of performing a stronger version of the Wide Zero Shot once acquiring Crossover Formation with the other Ultras from that movie.

Fire Spark

Zero is capable of creating fireworks and then causing huge explosions by launching them at his foes, capable of taking out multiple with one use of the attack.

Cyclone Ray

From his Ultimate Bracelet, Zero blasts a green and red energy attack that takes the form of a cyclone-like beam which is shown to harm Tyrant.

Hand Slash

Zero fires green crescent-shaped energy attacks from his hands. These attacks seemingly have homing properties.

Ultra Zero Kick

In a technique very similar to what his masters Leo and Astra do with their strikes, Zero performs a kick, engulfing his leg in fire to maximize the damage. Much like his masters, this kick can be used on the ground casually during combat or as a deceive blow to overpower the enemy, usually by leaping in the air.

Big Bang Zero

Similarly to his Ultra Zero Kick, Zero lights his hand on fire and chops at his opponent which is capable of shattering Darklops Zeros sluggers with a single strike.

Ultra Zero Punch

Zero performs a powerful punch attack that can knock back opponents. He can perform a stronger variant of it called the Zero Knuckle by concentrating and covering energy into his fist.

Zero Driver

A physical attack seen in his fights with Glenfire and Belial, Zero grabs his opponent around their stomach, rockets them (and himself) into the air before bringing them back down to the ground, slamming the opponent right on their head.

Ultra Zero Defenser

Like other Ultras, Zero can make his own personal barrier to protect himself and others from harm. Zero’s is usually purple but he’s also made a green one when shielding his whole body from one of Hyper Zettons attacks. Ultra barriers can do far more than just protect an individual, more will be explained in the Ultra Physiology section.

Ultra Willpower

An attack seen in his sparring match with Ultraman Jack, Zero fires out a telekinetic blast that pushes Jack back.

Ultra Zero Lecter

Zero emits light from his body in order to purify someone. He’s only used this move once when the noble guardian Mirror Knight had his soul corrupted by Belial and Zero removed Belial’s soul violating virus from his soon to be friend, purifying him.

Zero Beam Closer

A technique Zero used after escaping Belial's pocket dimension, Zero closed off the space time distortion with a few blasts from this move.

Ultra Physiology

Ultras are Giants of Light who were bestowed with great power from the Plasma Spark that turned the once human-like aliens into the iconic symbols of peace we know them as today. Ultras come in many shapes and sizes. There are those from the main universe for the franchise like the Ultra Brothers and other members of the Inter Galactic Defense Force but there are so many more, who didn't get their powers from the Plasma Spark like those from the Land of Light. There are ancient giants from other universes like Tiga and Trigger, completely digital Ultras like X and even beings born from the will of the Earth itself like Gaia and Agul. Despite all of these different origins and ways of gaining their powers, we see that no matter the era or what universe the Ultra comes from, all Ultras share the same physiology and consistently display similar abilities. Being an Ultra comes with many useful powers for dealing with kaiju and aliens alike in the name of defending peace and justice throughout the multiverse. As previously mentioned, since every Ultra shares the same biology no matter their origin, they all inherently share most if not all of these traits/abilities:

Color Timer

A distinct characteristic that every Ultra has, the color timer is part of the Ultra’s body that stores their energy and indicates their energy status. Whenever the Ultra has either full energy or most of it remaining, the color is blue except for a few exceptions like Belial, who has a purple color timer. When an Ultra starts running low on energy, the color changes from blue to red and starts beeping, acting as a warning that the giant of light will soon be out of power. This is especially important on Earth where a majority of shows and movies take place because on our planet, Ultras can only remain active for around 3 minutes as established in the very first Ultraman episode in 1966, which has continued all the way to the most recent show: 2025’s Ultraman Omega

However, during research some questions about the time limit were raised. There are several examples of Ultras being active on Earth for longer than their established time limit, both with and without their color timers ever going off. Some examples are Z and Ace vs Baraba, Taro and Mebius vs Inpelalizer, Zoffy chilling in his Ultra form for at least 10 minutes, Tregear removing Taiga’s host from him, allowed him to stay active on Earth for hours along with Tregear himself and Zero staying active on Earth for basically the whole Ginga S movie, fitting in training Ginga and Victory along with fighting Etelgar and various opponents without any issue. These are just a few examples, so the question remains: what do we make of this? Is it inconsistent or is there a valid argument for Ultras being able to last longer than 3 minutes? Here are the arguments for and against the color timers 3 minute time limit:

Arguments For:

Arguments Against:

Travel Spheres

Though Ultras can skilfully utilize both flight and teleportation to get to where they need to be, they can also choose to encase themselves within large Travel Spheres for speedy intergalactic travel. While the nature of the spheres has seldom been elaborated on, we do know they’re physical energy constructs, given Ultraman’s crashing into Shin Hayata’s VTOL caused the plane to explode upon collision. When inside, the creator of the sphere is granted control of the sky at incredible speeds, along with resistance to the normally harmful effects of atmospheric exit and reentry. The inside of the spheres can also act as extensions of the Ultras’ telepathic powers, shifting and moving at their will. This was best shown when Ultraman, attempting to atone for accidentally killing Hayata, held the injured human inside of a smaller, protective Travel Sphere, despite having already physically disappeared into the Beta Capsule. Ultras aren’t the only beings that can utilize the spheres either, as the kaiju Bemular was able to create one when escaping from the Monster Graveyard, thus giving the normally flightless monster a new means of travel.

Ultra Signs

Unique text that differs from Ultra to Ultra, the Signs are special messages made of light that Ultras can project across long distances, usually to call for help or alert others of danger. Each one is written in the unique language of the Ultras, and can travel through deep space nearly instantly. Though invisible to humans, certain monsters can see and interact with the Ultra Signs, such as when the kaiju Tyrant destroyed those sent out by the Ultra Brothers.

Fusionism/Possession/Resurrection

One of the Ultras’ defining characteristics is the ability to fuse with another being by sharing their life force with them, usually a human so they can remain on Earth for a longer period of time. Doing this also heals or revives the person the Ultra fuses with, something Zero specifically has done with all 3 of his hosts. If the Ultra chooses to do so they can take over the host’s body completely, possessing them in the process although most Ultras are nice enough to ask first.

Energy Manipulation and Absorption/Statistics Amplification

Ultras can utilize energy in a variety of ways. The most common usage of such energy powers is firing their signature Ultra Beam attacks like Ultraman's iconic Spacium Ray which burns at 500,000 Celsius (with Powered’s Mega Spacium Ray using about 100 million Celsius). Ultras can also expel this energy omnidirectionally or from their color timer. They can also share their energy with other Ultras if they are low on energy or to bring them back to life. In addition to sharing energy, Ultras can share their powers with others where this has been used quite a bit with many of the New Generation Heroes using the powers they've borrowed from their predecessors like Zero giving Taiga a bracelet containing his power or various Ultras’ powers being contained in medals that are used by Z. Ultras can use energy to enhance their striking power like with Ace, Gaia, and Mebius or amplify their speed like with Gaia, Cosmos and Justice. Being an Ultra host also increases the host's physical abilities.

Throughout the franchise, Ultras primarily absorb solar energy from the Sun to draw their strength from and to reenergize themselves, but some can also absorb other sources of energy such as when Dyna absorbed plasma energy and energy from Super GUTS’ artificial sun to restore him to full power as well as lightning or when Cosmos absorbed stress energy and fired it back at the attacker. Trigger was also able to absorb the energy from Mother Spheresaurus which had absorbed energy from the Eternity Core and convert it into light where he then transferred it to Kanata, allowing him to transform into Decker again

Telepathy

A commonly used ability among the Ultras to the point where even little kids know that Ultras use it, telepathy is handy for communicating with other beings, usually another Ultra. Its range extends throughout the universe and can naturally be used to communicate when Ultras are worlds apart like when Ultraman communicated with Hideki Go while in the M78 Nebula and Father and Mother of Ultra telling Mebius he needs to return home. It can even be used while Ultras are out of commission like when Mebius was frozen in ice. While it's only been used this way once (and by an evil Ultra no less), Tregear looked through someone’s mind to forcefully reveal information.

Barrier Creation

As talked about already in Zero’s Ultra Zero Defenser section, Ultras can create an energy barrier to protect themselves and others from attacks but they have more special properties. They can reflect attacks back at the enemy, immobilize enemies by enveloping them within an enclosed space and attacks that distort space time like Zegan’s ray. Barriers can be made to protect an entire city or small enough to protect a few humans. Their lifeforce can even be used to make an invisible barrier that keeps monsters away from a location and can project barriers around their hosts and friends while still inside their host’s body. It's also worth noting that when Ultras go into higher forms, they also act as barriers that can repel attacks as seen with Ultras like Gaia and Mebius

Teleportation

A common ability among Ultras is the ability to teleport, both out of combat like when Ultraman had to teleport back to Earth to stop Baltan’s invasion and in combat as seen above when Gaia dodged Gan-Q’s attack or during Ginga’s fight with Dark Zagi. Their teleportation can even take them in and out of other dimensions like when Zoffy brought Minami into Yapool’s dimension. 80 was also capable of teleporting into other dimensions, can teleport themselves and others out of the Fourth Dimension, and was able to teleport from Earth to another planet and back. It can also be used to aura farm if you’re Zero.

Telekinesis

Various Ultras have shown the ability to telekinetically manipulate objects. This power in the Ultraman universe is known as "Ultra Psychokinesis”. They can use their telekinesis on their enemies such as when Ultraman and Dyna have lifted monsters with their powers, one of which was to freeze the monster in stasis and the other to return them home. As previously mentioned, Ultraman can freeze monsters and attacks completely but he’s not the only one: Jack, Ace, Taro and Tiga can also freeze monsters in stasis. Ultra Psychokinesis can also be used when not in their normal state like when Seven uses it as Dan Moroboshi during the events of Ultraman Leo or when Taro was turned into a Spark Doll. An Ultra’s telekinesis can even be used on something with enough mass to end all civilization.

Enhanced Senses/Extrasensory Perception/Clairvoyance

Ultras’ bodies come with many different ways to view the world around them and assist them in battle. Ultraman has clairvoyant rays of light in his eyes that allow him to see hidden places and Alien Baltans’ invisible ship. Seven can perceive dimensional rifts that lead to the fourth dimension. Jack can hear the sound of a needle falling 200 km away and sense a monster's malice. Taro can see a monster’s true form with his enhanced vision. Leo can tell that an alien is real and not a costume. 80’s human form, Takeshi, has X-ray vision and can perceive invisible enemies. The Great's host senses an alien's presence. Tiga’s host can see the soul of a former warrior possessing someone's body. Dyna could detect the real Zombaiyu from his mirages. Agul can see through matter. Mebius senses an object his crew is looking for and can see a seam in time. Hikari uses psychometry. Geed sensed Beliarok being created inside the void. Taiga detected an evil wave. Z senses Neronga's presence while it was invisible with his eyes closed, sensed Jugglus Juggler’s dark pulse and used enhanced vision to locate Yoko. Omega can sense kaiju with his sense of smell and see Miko getting her life force drained.

Size Manipulation

Various Ultras such as Jack, Taro , Astra, 80, Gaia, Agul, Cosmos, Zero and more can freely shrink and grow in size if the situation calls for it, some of them notably small enough to fit inside a ball or down to microscopic levels. Ultras are also capable of staying human-sized when they transform and can also shrink other beings or objects.

Duplication

Ultras like Ultraman, Dyna, Cosmos, and Decker have all shown the ability to duplicate themselves in battle. Other Ultras have also shown this ability with the use of special items such as Taro with his King Bracelet and some of the New Generation Heroes with their toyetic gimmicks. Zero is one of these Ultras by using the Ultimate Bracelet to split himself into two separate bodies using different forms, specifically his mode changes (more on those later.)

Elemental Manipulation

Ultras can wield various elements from fire as we’ve already seen with Zeros Ultra Zero Kick  to lightning to ice. Zoffy can fire electricity. Jack can spray out a freezing mist that reaches the temperature of -300 degrees below absolute zero. Tiga and Gaia can also freeze monsters with an icy mist. Ace can generate electricity into his strikes. Taro can negatively convert thermal energy to achieve absolute zero temperature and shoot fire from his hands. Leo enveloped his whole body in heat and fired it out in a large blast to free Astra. Cosmos has electrical powers and can control the weather. Rosso and Blu use various elemental powers such as ground and wind. Tregear’s main attacks all contain lightning. Z freezes Tri-King, generates a tornado and can create a lightning strike using other Ultras’ powers. Ultras can also absorb and manipulate nearby bodies of water or fire it from their body

Empowerment

Ultras gain massive boosts in strength and resolve when they hear their friends cheering for them and feel the support of others believing in them whether it's their attack team, random civilians or other Ultras. Jack was getting destroyed by Black King and Alien Nackle, but his friendship with Ultraman and Seven helped him gather the strength to overpower the duo. Tiga enters his Glitter Form upon receiving the inner light from other humans. Zearth hears the crowd chanting for him and overpowers Ultraman Shadow in their beam clash. Mebius can recover from a near death injury because of the faith his friends have in him. It’s also confirmed in future episodes that his friends make him stronger. Rosso and Blu get empowered by Asashi's belief in them. After hearing the bosses’ words, Titas got the strength to overpower Gorothunder. Z is able to regain his strength and defeat Destrudos after hearing the members of STORAGE cheering for him to get up. Grigio is able to overpower Grigio Darkness after her new friends encourage her. The cheers from his friends made Trigger Dark stronger, the same thing happened with Trigger. Arc was losing a battle, but rallies himself and wins after hearing the cheers of people believing in him.

Immortality/Regeneration

The Ultra’s body allows them to repair different types of damage they may sustain in battle. Zero specifically regenerated almost instantly after Belial Atrocious stabbed through his body, but he’s far from the only Ultra to demonstrate this regeneration. Jack impaled himself on a monster’s spikes which left no visible wound. The same thing happened when Taro was impailed. Ace was killed by Doragory, but was revived by a burst of energy in the sky. After blowing himself up with Ultra Dynamite, Taro can reassemble and regenerate his shattered body instantly through the power of the immortal Ultra Heart. To add consistency to this, various other Ultras like Mebius and Tregear can do the same thing. Powered gets slashed by Dorako and his regeneration completely heals his host's wound to where you can barely tell he was injured. Cosmos regenerates after getting stabbed in the stomach and can heal his own injuries. Mebius was stabbed through the chest and pinned to a dam, but there was no wound once he was freed from the ice. Tregear killed Taiga, Titas and Fuma, but the Tri-Squad was able to live on as particles before they eventually were able to reform their bodies. Arc regenerates a wound in his shoulder which we see again when his human host returns to his normal form. Ultras also have extremely long life spans, far greater than humans. Ultraman states this fact to Zoffy when he reveals he’s 20,000 years old as expressed above.

Space-Time Manipulation

Multiple Ultras have shown to be able to affect the fabric of space-time in various ways. Zero and Leo made a hole between dimensions with their combined beams. Agul closed a space-time distortion along with him and Gaia’s intense physical and energy attacks can also trigger those, tearing open a wormhole from its depths emerged Zorim, a colossal force born from the chaos of their battle. Some Ultras like the Giants of Darkness can create dimensional fields and take the fight there. Dyna’s Revolium Wave can send his targets to another dimension through a black hole. Z pushed back a dimensional collapse. Decker can create black holes by condensing space itself. Arc utilizes dimensional abilities that can affect and close rifts in space time. Omega closes a space time portal. A strange trait of Ultra physiology in relation to space-time is inside an Ultra’s inner light, space-time itself is warped from the outside world

Matter Manipulation/Transmutation

Ultras can manipulate matter for deadly attacks whether it's altering a being's body or creating things out of nowhere. Jack killed Oxter and turned his body into nothing but bones, Leo seemingly molecularly disassembled a monster with an energy slash, Gaia disintegrated monsters into particles, Neos vaporized a monster into a skeleton which turned to ashes, when Tregear killed the Tri Squad, he killed them by reducing them to particles of light, and some Ultras’ attacks like Great’s Dissolver Ray and Joneus’ Astro Beam are explicitly stated to break an opponent down molecularly. As far as transmutation goes, Leo turned Ron into a dog and another monster into a tree, Tiga turned a monster into a water droplet while Fuma turned Pagos to stone. Seven, 80, and Decker have turned monsters back to their previous forms. As previously mentioned, Ultras can also make things out of nothing, ranging from a mochi hammer, large mirrors, Tector Gear, and containers made of a material earthlings can't see.

Aura/Non-Physical Interaction

Ultras have an aura, which is a powerful energy field that surrounds their energy body and can be used for both attack and defense, glowing with intense light, heat and energy. This is directly connected to an Ultra’s strength, determination and fighting spirit, making it a key part of their power. They can also harm intangible beings like Woo who is speculated to lack a tangible physical form, Leugocyte in its gas form as well as non-corporeal beings like the ghost monster Reibatos revived as seen above.

Soul Manipulation

Ultras have been shown capable of affecting souls in some shape or form, including Zero himself whilst in his Luna-Miracle form. Some other examples include Ultraman and Ultraseven managing to harm Alien Reiblood’s soul with their energy beams, Dyna being able to return the souls stolen by a kaiju, Gaia harming a spiritual parasite, Cosmos fought Renki who is the spirit of two lovers whose souls couldn't find peace, Orb destroying a spiritual being and Geed forcing Alien Reiblood’s soul out of Belial as shown above.

Life Manipulation/Healing

An ability fitting for a race that devotes their lives to protecting life, Ultras have abilities that let them heal others. These abilities can heal broken wings, revive dead aliens or Ultras, heal fellow Ultras over intergalactic distances and undo petrification. There are some examples of a few Ultras having a specialty in healing like Mother of Ultra, Cosmos and Grigio. Some Ultras have also been seen affecting life like when Cosmos briefly animates an inanimate object and when both Titas and Tregear reanimated astronauts who were killed.

Technology Manipulation

Ultras have shown to be able to manipulate technology. Taro repairs a shattered android. Astra sent out a signal that could be picked up by Earth's technology while he was frozen solid in a distant nebula. Cosmos flew into several machines to enter the dream realm. Justice reactivated the Mezard robots after Cosmos shut them down. Mebius digitizes himself. Tregear makes himself appear on computer screens and shuts them off once he leaves the room as shown above. Arc can fight against Kanegon’s AI.

Power Nullification

Various Ultras have shown the ability to turn off an opponent's attacks or other powers. Ultraman shutting off Baltan's barrier. Ace nullified a monster's intangibility and removed Yapool’s energy from the same monster to revert her to her normal state. As silly as this sounds, Taro hit various crabs with a beam so they cannot become a giant monster in the future, Tiga nullified a monster’s illusions as seen above, and Cosmos can apply seals to prevent an opponent from firing their energy attacks as well as alter a monster’s body to prevent them from emitting poison gas

Dimensional/Time Travel

The Ultra Twinkle Way is a technique used by Ultras to access an extradimensional tunnel, allowing them to shorten the distance between locations, access higher dimensions, or travel through time. This ability was prominently demonstrated when the Ultra Brothers entered the Anti-Universe by exceeding the speed of light.

Portal Creation

Despite being able to fly at faster than light speeds and teleport across universes, Ultras like Dyna, Mebius, Tregear, Trigger, Decker, and Arc can create portals to travel from one place to another. Zero can also create portals using the Ultimate Aegis to open portals to travel to other universes. Outside of traditional portals to travel, Ultras can also create portals to their inner light or consciousness to chat with their host

Sealing

Ultras have the ability to seal away their opponents. Four of the Ultra Brothers sealed away Yapool. A downside is it did cost them a lot of energy and came with the risk of them never being able to transform again. This turned out to not be the case as seen later on when they transform to rescue Mebius. Something similar happened with the New Generation Heroes when they sealed Grimdo. To accomplish this, they did have to sacrifice their ability to transform, unlike with the Ultra Brothers. This may seem damning, but there are different types of sealing, some of which don't come with the cost of potentially losing the ability to transform. An Ultra was able to seal a monster away inside a mountain with their beam, Blazar sealed away Deemaga and Arc sealed the Ze Su gate which had the power to destroy the Earth, all of which came with no downsides to using the ability. There are two other examples of Ultras sealing opponents away; Tiga sealing the Giants of Darkness, however we don't see the event or know if he literally sealed them away. Zoffy's power was also stated to be what kept Maga-Orochi sealed away. Again, we don't see how he did it, but it's at the very least done under his own powers.

Illusion Creation

For these next few powers these are abilities only shown by a few Ultras starting with the ability to create illusions which we see with Leo, Hikari (as seen above), and Tregear. They are not shown to be used in combat besides the exception of Fuma making after images. More traditional illusions are usually used to display information or reveal something.

Sleep Manipulation

An ability shown with two Ultras: Great and Cosmos. Great’s host is seen putting one of his teammates to sleep as shown above and Cosmos is able to calm monsters down and can put them to sleep.

Conceptual Manipulation (Passive)

The Pillar has the ability to absorb people's anxieties and erase their memories, rewriting reality so that concepts like kaiju and the research team dedicated to observing kaiju SKIP no longer exist, literally draining the color out of the world as we see in the episode. However, Arc naturally countered the Pillar’s ability to erase concepts thanks to his bond with Yuma, making him immune to the Pillars effects and still being able to transform into Arc at the end of the episode despite the Masked Man's best efforts. He even bypassed such the Pillars assault with his Arc Finalize attack, which was unaffected by its powers to rewrite concepts.

Fourth Wall Breaking

Yes, like our friend Gohan, Ultras have shown the ability to break the fourth wall. Much like the Saiyan warrior, when Ultras break the fourth wall, there isn't any reality breaking Looney Tunes shenanigans going on or anything that should be used seriously in a debate. Usually it's just an Ultra like Zero (who has hosted various shows like Ultraman Retsudden, where he talks to the audience narrating Ultraman stories) or even Absolute Tartarus (who shares traits with Ultras) acknowledging or talking to the audience. A more comedic example was when the New Generation Heroes, while leaving Taiga's Earth, all say goodbye to the camera.

Resistances

As explained in the introduction to their physiology, no matter where or when the Ultra originated, they all share very similar physiologies and powers. Just like how they share these physiologies, they should also share most if not all resistances. This is backed up by the various examples of Ultras resisting and overcoming very similar attacks as you’ll see below.

Ultras have demonstrated resistances to:

Forms

Gohan

The Great Saiyaman (Best Outfit TBH!)

With a special watch, Gohan can turn into the superhero known as The Great Saiyaman! Designed by Bulma for Gohan to hide his identity while fighting crime and helping people, the Great Saiyaman comes with an orange helmet, red cape, white gloves and boots, and a green Gi with black bodysuit underneath.

Super Saiyan

The standard transformation for almost every named Saiyan in the franchise, Super Saiyan, is simple but iconic. Achieved during training with his father in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, this form grants the user striking golden hair and a massive multiplier of 50x to the user’s stats, as well as helping one’s eye sight apparently!

Super Saiyan 2

Achieved by Gohan during his fight against Cell after witnessing the death of Android 16, Super Saiyan 2 is the first true ascension beyond the original Super Saiyan transformation. While not too visually distinct from the original Super Saiyan outside of Gohan’s initial transformation, this form is 2x stronger than the original Super Saiyan, resulting in an even greater increase in overall stats for the user.

Ultimate Gohan

Achieved by Gohan via undergoing a special ritual performed by the Elder Kai, Ultimate Gohan is (seemingly) the culmination of all of Gohan’s latent potential, and thus causes him to be far stronger than his Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2 transformations. Unlike those forms, no set multiplier is known or can really be found for this transformation, but considering its superiority to Gotenks’ Super Saiyan 3 and later being comparable to Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue, it stands to reason the form should be equated to the multipliers obtained from those forms.

Beast Gohan

A form beyond the Ultimate, Beast Gohan is the true culmination of all of Gohan’s latent potential and his desire to achieve a power none had ever seen. Awakened after believing Piccolo to have been killed by Cell Max, Beast was born entirely of Gohan’s own abilities and shares many characteristics with him because of that. While not entirely explained, Beast Gohan’s power ceiling is seemingly tied to his anger, to the point that its full potential can only be unleashed if Gohan pushes himself to the brink of losing control before unleashing it in a short burst of sheer power and speed. In spite of all this however, Beast Gohan’s power is undeniable, being able to keep pace with Ultra Instinct Goku and even overpower it once he applied the aforementioned strategy.

Ultraman Zero

Wild Burst

After being defeated by Absolute Tartarus, Zero needed to return to planet K76 and train with Leo once again in order to overcome the warrior of the ultimate lifeform. This time, Leo would be joined by Seven and Joneus to train Zero and help him reawaken his fighting spirit which would take the form of Wild Burst. While Zero’s use of this form is limited and really only serves to help him remain in his most powerful form for a much longer time, its activation shattered his Tector Gear and a single blast was able to make Absolute Tartarus fall to his knees both impressive showings of power.

Strong-Corona

Following the events of Ultraman Saga where Zero fused with two other Ultramen: Cosmos and Dyna, Zero gained access to two new forms that used a combination of the other Ultras’ various mode changes. The first one being Strong-Corona Zero, which is a combination of Dyna’s Strong type and Cosmos’ Corona mode. As the name suggests, this mode change is used to give Zero a boost in strength and makes him more of a brawler. The two primary attacks that this form boasts are the Ultra Hurricane which sends opponents flying into the air to be set up for a devastating combo, and Garnate Buster, a huge blast of energy

Luna-Miracle

The second form Zero unlocked is Luna-Miracle Zero, a combination of Cosmos’ Luna mode and Dyna’s Miracle type. While the other mode change focuses on strength and offense, this one is all about speed and defense. His signature technique is the Miracle Zero Slugger, which creates multiple Zero Sluggers composed of energy that overwhelm the target in the barrage which can be fired from his normal Sluggers or the Ultra Zero Lance. This form also inherited traits from Cosmos, who is known as the hero of kindness. As such, Zero has several abilities that can heal others or purify them, such as Zero removing the souls of fallen monsters out of Alien Bat Gracie. Another move in Zero's arsenal is his Full Moon Wave which makes a barrier around the target and hits them with rays of light. It notably takes after Cosmos’ move: Full Moon Rect. which is a healing light that makes monsters powerless.

Ultimate

Upon his defeat by Arch Belial, Zero was saved by Ultraman Noa, a godlike figure throughout the multiverse with exceptional powers. Noa gave Zero the Ultimate Aegis which when used transforms Zero into “Ultimate Zero.” On top of gaining the ability to freely travel between universes, Zero also gains body armor, a sword on his right hand that can fire powerful energy blasts and amplify his already powerful melee attacks. Despite gaining his mode change forms after this one, Ultimate was still Zero’s strongest form at the time given how frequently he uses it compared to his other forms, specifically in his rematch with Belial where Zero indicated that Ultimate was his best form to deal with the evil Ultraman after Belial overpowered Strong-Corona mode

Shining

After Zero had his body possessed by Belial, who had returned from the dead and turned into Zero Darkness, Zero was helpless as Belial used his body to brutally kill his entire team. Trapped inside his own body, when all hope seemed lost, Zero was inspired by the words of his departed comrades and fought back against Belial's corruption from within his consciousness. And so Zero’s body began to almost… shine if you will and thus his newest transformation was born and expelled Belial from his body. On top of being his strongest form at the time, Zero also gained new abilities all related to controlling time. He can create a pocket dimension where time flows differently than the outside world, jump through time to save himself from danger and reverse time. It is worth noting that these abilities usually drain Zero’s energy absurdly fast, so he only uses them when absolutely necessary, but with his recent training it's likely he can use them more freely as seen with how he can use his Ultimate Shining form for far longer, which stacks his Ultimate form’s power on top of Shining’s own power.

Beyond

Seven years after Belial triggered the event known as the Crisis Impact, Zero would return to this location, but the Ultimate Aegis was damaged in the process. As such, Zero couldn't use any of his other forms if he needed to. While on this Earth, Zero fused with the salaryman Leito and was being given 4 Ultra Capsules by the scientist Ultraman Hikari. These capsules contained the power of 4 different Ultramen; Ginga, Victory, X and Orb. When the two of them perform an action known as Fusion Rise, Zero takes on the form of Ultraman Zero Beyond. This form specializes in crafting weapons out of energy, most notably the Quattro Slugger, which creates 4 Zero Sluggers composed of energy that act similarly to Zero’s normal Sluggers, although these can turn into a megaphone so that's fun. He also can make energy cores that fire lasers called the Balkey Chorus, which can be combined with the Quattro Sluggers for an overwhelming assault in close quarters. Beyond is unique among Zero’s other transformations as it requires him to be bonded with Leito in order to perform Fusion Rise, thus if Zero is without a host, he can’t access this form.

Beyond (Galaxy Glitter)

When all the members of the New Generation Heroes were coming together, Zero was trapped with Ultrawoman Grigio in the Dark-Killer Zone and awaiting rescue from the new team. After they were freed and Zero wanted some revenge on the revived Zero Darkness, the New Generation Heroes gave Zero a helping hand and performed Fusion Rise for him, allowing him to attain the form of Beyond once again (without the need for Leito), but this time with a shiny golden glow around his body with the fitting name Galaxy Glitter. This form has the same moves and capabilities as normal Beyond, just with the golden aura and an echo over his voice, making Galaxy Glitter just as deadly in close and long range confrontations.

Ultimate Shining

Currently Zero’s most recent and strongest transformation. As the name suggests, Ultimate Shining is a combination of Zero’s Ultimate and Shining forms, which he first used to try and stop Absolute Tartarus from kidnapping Princess Yullian, notably showing the ability to amplify his speed to protect her. While he could somewhat keep up with Absolute Tartarus, Zero couldn't stay in this form for long due to how fast it drained his energy and was defeated. As a result, Zero trained with Joneus, Leo and Seven in order to help him maintain the form for a longer period of time. After attaining his Wild Burst state, Zero accomplished just that, now being able to maintain this form for an extended period. Another aspect to the form is it allows Zero to fight purely on instinct which left Absolute Tartarus unable to read his moves and was able to consistently put him on the backfoot in their later fights

Scaling

Gohan

Gohan is one of the strongest fighters in all of the Dragon Ball multiverse. Due to his hybrid saiyan-human heritage, he has some of the most potential out of any fighter, having surpassed his father multiple times in the past. According to interviews from Akira Toriyama, Gohan with his Beast form was even stronger than Goku, and Gohan even fought toe to toe with his father in the Super manga recently. With all of this, Gohan would easily scale to not just his father and Vegeta, but to many of the other fighters and villains in the series.

Son Goku & Vegeta

Gohan’s father and the Prince of all Saiyans, Gohan has surpassed both his father Goku, and Vegeta multiple times in the past. Gohan in his Beast form recently went toe to toe with Goku in Mastered Ultra Instinct, so he would scale to both Goku and Vegeta and all of their feats.

Broly

The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly is one of the strongest saiyans ever. Broly has gone toe to toe with Goku, Vegeta, Frieza and even recently Gohan himself. So Gohan should definitely scale to Broly and his feats.

Frieza

The Emperor of the Universe and (likely) the current strongest mortal in Universe 7. While Gohan shouldn’t scale to current Frieza, he has no issue scaling to any of Frieza’s showings before the Granolah arc.

Zamasu

The scourge of the Multiverse, Zamasu was one of the most powerful foes in the series’ long history, but his traditional forms at the very least have long been surpassed, meaning Gohan should scale.

Miscellaneous

Ultraman Zero

Despite being young compared to a lot of the other Ultras at the time of his debut, Ultraman Zero quickly proved to be THE strongest of them all (with a few exceptions) thanks to just how badly he beat Belial, who famously soloed every single Ultra in the Land of Light after he was freed from his imprisonment. As the franchise has continued to evolve, so has Zero, gaining plenty of new powers and forms, letting him consistently be the pinnacle of power for the entire verse (again, with a few exceptions…I can feel Ultraman King and Noa looking at me while I glaze Zero.)

The Ultra Brothers

The strongest, the bravest, the most legendary. This elite group of Inter Galactic Defense Force members is made up of the franchise’s original heroes, the Ultras who first vowed to defend humanity and the Earth from the forces of evil. Though the roster grows and shifts with time, the most common lineup consists of 7 core members: Zoffy, Ultraman, Zero’s father, Seven, Jack, Ace, Taro and Leo, who became one of Zero’s mentors after the latter was exiled. Zero has fought on par with and even outperformed the Brothers, so he should be capable of performing the same feats that they have.

Ultraman Belial

Once a proud and noble Ultraman who was corrupted by his lust for power and sought to bend everyone in existence to his whims, Ultraman Belial is Zero’s most prolific arch-enemy and one of the most powerful entities in the entire Ultraman franchise. Zero has fought Belial multiple times, even humiliating him in certain encounters, and by this point, has surpassed the Reionic Ultraman and thus, should scale to the Emperor of Darkness’ greatest feats.

Absolute Tartarus

A warrior from the ultimate life form: Absolutian (as he will remind you several times throughout his appearances), Absolute Tartarus is arguably Zero’s most powerful opponent to date. In order to try and save his race from their planet’s soon to be destruction, Absolute Tartarus launched the absolute conspiracy, a scheme to take the Land of Light from the Ultras and make it the Absolutians' new home. Naturally, he came to blows with many legendary Ultras to try and stop him, including Ultraman Zero. While Zero struggled against him initially, by the end of the story Zero was able to keep up with Absolute Tartarus and drive him to the brink of defeat so he should be capable of performing similar feats.

Misc. Ultras

From the members of the Inter Galactic Defense Force in the Land of Light to one of the many other Ultras throughout the multiverse, there is no shortage of powerful heroes who rise to the challenge of defending peace in the universe. Among them all, Zero is easily one of, if not outright the most powerful Ultra of them all, besides the legendary Ultraman King and Ultraman Noa. He’s able to consistently fight alongside warriors like the New Generation Heroes and even more powerful Ultras like Father of Ultra. Zero should easily be able to perform and even exceed all of the feats performed by any other Ultra from throughout the franchise's long history.

Showa Heroes

Heisei Heroes

New Generation/Reiwa Heroes

Misc. Kaiju and Aliens

What good would any Ultraman be without a wide variety of giant monsters and ruthless aliens to fight? There are a whole lot of monsters that the various Ultras have faced throughout the series, and Zero is no exception. In fact, his first major fight is him easily taking on Ultraman Belial’s 100 monster army, which includes several of the most iconic and powerful monsters in the franchise, such as Zetton, who killed Ultraman himself. It stands to reason that Zero can replicate the feats performed by the kaiju and aliens from throughout this long running franchise.

Cosmology

Gohan

Individual Universe

Before diving into the cosmology of Dragon Ball as a whole, it is best to start with a brief introduction on the cosmology found in the individual universes of Dragon Ball. Universes in Dragon Ball are depicted via the image above, and differ greatly to our own in many ways, most notably its size, and can be accurately described as a Macrocosm rather than a traditional universe, due to being composed of various different realms. It is for this reason that destruction of Solar Systems, Galaxies, and of course, the Universe, can get much higher in Dragon Ball then many other franchises. Without further ado, let’s begin the deep dive!

The Living World

The Living World, also known as The Universe, is the closest thing in Dragon Ball to our own universe, albeit still differing greatly in many ways. The Living World, as the name implies, is where those who are alive reside, and is home to all life in the universe whether it be stars, planets, and even ourselves! Composed of 4 different galaxies located in the 4 cardinal directions (North, South, East, and West), these quadrants are ruled over by 4 Kai’s and serve as the home to almost every major character and event in Dragon Ball.

It should also be noted that, while contentious, various statements found in the Daizenshuu talk about the Living World being infinite in-size, ranging from it “expanding endlessly” to it being an “endless space, with ‘galaxies’ composed of innumerable nebulae, made of innumerable stars.” This can of course be brought into question by virtue of there being a visible edge seen in the canon depiction above, as well as characters like Bulma talking about the universe’s edge and center.

One final note is that while the Demon Realm is included and mapped out in this depiction, this is due to it being from before Dragon Ball DAIMA, which has since retconned the Demon Realm to exist outside of Dragon Ball’s Multiverse rather than within the individual Macrocosms.

The Cosmos

The Cosmos, otherwise known as the Afterlife, makes up the top portion of the Macrocosm and is Dragon Ball’s equivalent to the commonly held belief of well…an Afterlife. Composed of various realms such as the Kaio Realm (not to be confused with the Realm of the Kai’s), Enma’s Realm (Purgatory), and Hell. Despite both existing in the same Macrocosm, the Afterlife is dimensionally separate from the Living World, having its own distinct time-flow compared to the Living World and only being accessible if one is a God, knows a special teleportation technique such as the Kai Kai or Instant Transmission, or is of course, dead. Said to exist “higher than the sky”, the Cosmos serve as the domain of various Gods in Dragon Ball, containing everything from Heaven (which is stated to be as large as the universe) to King Kai’s planet to Snake Way.

To add further intrigue to this relatively unexplored part of Dragon Ball’s cosmology in-canon, according to the Daizenshuu 4, the Cosmos is “a dimensionally transcendental heavenly country that cannot be perceived from the human realm. From this land, the gods look down upon the entire world.” The implications of this are obviously something that can’t really be talked about in this section, so see Before the Verdicts for a further deep dive into the validity of this statement.

Kaioshin Realm

The Realm of the Kai’s, not to be confused with the Kaio Realm in the Afterlife, is the final layer to the cosmology of individual universes in Dragon Ball. Existing in a dimension separate to both the entire Macrocosm itself, the Realm of the Kai’s orbits around its respective Universe in a manner similar to how the moon orbits around the Earth, with this orbit allowing Supreme Kai’s to oversee both the Living World and Afterlife. Stated to be around 1/10th the size of the Macrocosm, the realm is depicted as a glass sphere with various suns and one singular planet, known as the World of the Kai’s, and can only be accessed via teleportation techniques such as the Kai-Kai or Instant Transmission.

The Demon Realm

The realm that came before all else in Dragon Ball’s wider Multiverse, the Demon Realm exists beyond all 12 of the existing universes in Dragon Ball, and is responsible for the creation of its Multiverse in the first place. Composed of 3 spaces known as Demon Worlds, each of which exist on top of and supersede the previous, these Demon Worlds contain various planets in spite of what their name would imply in terms of size. Accessible only via large fish known as Sir Warp, who reside in a dimension that exists between the Demon Realm and Multiverse as a whole, it is safe to assume the Demon Realm should be comparable in size to an individual universe in Dragon Ball considering the realm served as the basis for its entire Multiverse.

Strange Dimension of Swirling Lights

Seen exclusively in the DBS: Broly movie, the Strange Dimension of Swirling Lights was accessed by Super Saiyan Gogeta and Super Saiyan Broly in a beam clash, before eventually being destroyed and broken out of once both went into their highest-levels of power respectively.

While just a cool-looking visual for a while, the DBS: Broly Anime Comic released around the time of DBS: Super Hero coming to theaters would result in it becoming much more of a hot-button topic due to it describing the realm as “Superdimensional”, with Chapter 6 of the comic referring to the battle inside of it as “The Ultimate Superdimensional Battle”.

Like with the Afterlife, any implications about this for the cosmology as a whole along with arguments for or against it will be kept to the Before the Verdicts sections, so see that for further insight into what this place actually is in the context of VS.

The Multiverse

Composed of 12, originally 18, universes, each individual universe in Dragon Ball follows the same structure and depiction found in the Daizenshuu as shown by the Dragon Ball Super Manga. Each universe in Dragon Ball comes in a pair, separated via something known as Neutral Space, but connected in the sense of having nearly if not outright identical species, planets, stars, etc but entirely different histories. For an example of how much these histories can differ, Universe 7’s Saiyans are a vicious species that would eventually be almost entirely wiped out while Universe 6’s Saiyans are a peaceful species currently thriving as galactic peacekeepers.

The Neutral Zone

As mentioned in the section above going over the Multiverse, Neutral Space serves as a sort of barrier/holding space for the 12 universes, being what is responsible for preventing the individual universes from making contact with each other and in general serves as the sort of pillar keeping Dragon Ball’s Multiverse together. It is this space where the Tournament of Destroyers took place, and is where Super Shenron was summoned for the first time in the franchise’s history.

Interestingly, Neutral Space is itself seemingly a universe, containing stars and galaxies as shown when Super Shenron was summoned inside of it. Like with the Afterlife and Dimension of Swirling Lights mentioned above, there are elements to this specific space that can be used to argue for higher dimensional Dragon Ball scaling, so see a deep dive into that in the “Before the Verdicts” sections.

The World of Void

The Null Realm, also known as the World of Void, is a dimension that exists outside of Dragon Ball’s Multiverse and is stated to contain no time or space, lacking them entirely. While it has been described as being “filled with infinite nothingness”, this was a slight mistranslation on Crunchyroll’s part as the actual quote is translated as “a world without time or space, filled with only eternity and emptiness.”

Alternate Timelines

In Dragon Ball, time travel operates on the idea of Multiverse Theory, which is that each individual timeline is its own universe and that actions one takes in the past will create a new timeline rather than affecting their current one, unless one is a deity such as an Angel. As of the time of writing, Dragon Ball currently has around 7 timelines, which you can find explanations for here

These timelines are treated as separate from one another, typically impossible to cross without specific devices or artifacts such as Time Machines or Time Rings to breach through.

Ultraman Zero

Bubble Universe

The Universes in the Ultra series are quite complex when compared to our own. For starters, each ‘universe’ is actually a bubble universe containing multiple realms inside it (now where have I seen this before…) and some of them have their own subrealms inside them. We will go over these realms one-by-one and give a brief but informative description about them. Starting with..

The Universe

The normal Universe inside the bubble universe, which is also called the third dimension (as in the third spatial dimension), is a vast cosmos filled to the brim with stars, planets, humans and a large variety of alien creatures. It is also where the homeworld of all Ultras, the Land of Light, is situated. It has been called endless and infinite in size numerous times throughout the series’ history, and so, it’s pretty clear that it is outright an infinitely large realm.

It is interesting to note that this realm has several parallel realms like a Mirror World similar to the normal universe and a computer universe. There is also the timestream/timeline, which is treated as the infinite fourth axis aside from the three axes of space. The universe also has another parallel world known as the Antimatter universe, but that will be explored further in the next segment.

Higher Dimensions

The Bubble Universe not only contains the universe and similar realms inside it, but it also contains numerous other ‘dimensions’ which are a bit more complex than your typical dimension.

For starters, there exists the Fourth Dimension which not only houses aliens like Icarus, Bam and the Yapool. It is a realm which cannot be imagined or reached by humans and it is also the Anti-Matter universe. We know this because the Anti-Matter universe is very blatantly described as being unreachable from the “Third Dimension” and required Ace and other Ultras to exceed the speed of light to reach, which is supporting evidence for this as in the same series it is described that even approaching the speed of light allows you to see through the Fourth Dimension.

Not only that, but the universe is also stated to be multi dimensional in nature by official guidebooks which suggest that the Structure as a whole might be much bigger, but more on that will be discussed in the “Before the Verdicts” segment.

The Multiverse and Beyond

Of course, Ultraman wouldn't be a tokusatsu series without the inclusion of a multiversal aspect to its mythos, but surprisingly it goes far beyond just that. As before, let's take a deep dive into the Multiverse and Beyond!

The Multiverse

The Multiverse is made up of an infinite number of earths and universes which diverge endlessly at every moment into new universes. Essentially, there are as many universes as there are possibilities, which are infinite. It's important to note that at this stage whenever we say universe, it is referring to a Bubble Universe as a whole and not just the simple universe.

These universes are floating within the Hyperspace or the  "Ever-growing Grand Space". The Multiverse has also shown the characteristics, which makes it a Type-2 and Type-3 type multiverse, although there are also implications that it might outright be Type-4, but it's a little unclear at the moment. Other similar realms also exist in this plane.

There exists a shadow world beyond the Bubble Universe which exists between ‘this world and the next’, with ‘This world’ being the Bubble Universe in the context and Helnarak, who exists here is stated to be an ‘Extradimensional threat’ and ‘a threat beyond dimensions’ (the japanese kanji on right) in the very opening of the episode. Similarly, there exists the Monster Graveyard. It is a realm where the souls of dead Kaijus go and its powers disrupt an Ultra’s powers, but that's not a coincidence as it's a multiverse spanning spatial distortion which has shifting density, vector and phase of space, and it violates the energy balance. Despite that, several characters like Ultraman, Seven and Mebius have flown to it and returned successfully to the Land of Light.

The Waterfall of Time

The Waterfall of Time is a lesser known aspect of Ultra cosmology, which was featured in the Ultimate Force Zero Side story novel series which takes place after the events of Ultra Zero Fight and was also the theme of a future stage play. (You can read it here if you want to, it's a good novel series)

It is a realm, which is stated to be unreachable by anyone who isn't summoned there by the Guardian of time, and we see that it sees the events across the Bubble Universes and we have confirmation that it exists outside of the timeline, and sees all of the individual timelines.

While we don't have that much information about this place, it's still an important aspect of cosmology because of being the center point of a canon novel series.

Real Life???

Okay so bear with me, it’s a little wild.. trust me.

So in Ultraman Max, we are introduced to Hasunumo, a writer in the real world who dreams about being Kaito, the host of Ultraman Max. In the episode, it is established that the Real World exists which sees Ultraman as a television show

However, the Real world is mentioned in another show as well.

In Ultraman Tiga, we are introduced to Charija, a villain who is somewhat of a gag-ish oc type character who always mentions Eiji Tsuburaya (yes, the actual real world creator of Tsuburaya Productions and Ultraman) and even mentions how he created Ultraman multiple times.

Safe to say, a Real World does exist in the franchise, but whether anyone scales to it or not is something which will be discussed in Before the Verdicts.

Weaknesses

Gohan

Gohan is absurdly strong, there’s no denying that, like anyone else, he has his weaknesses. While Gohan has attained mastery over his other transformations, Gohan himself has noted that his Beast form is still currently imperfect and can only be fully tapped into via pushing himself to the limit emotionally and letting it out in a short burst. This lack of mastery likely also extends to the form’s stamina, as Gohan was left almost completely exhausted after sparring with characters of similar/equal power like Goku and Broly for a short time. In general, this issue with stamina can extend to most Dragon Ball characters, as shown by the Tournament of Power, a 48 minute long tournament that left even the most resilient of characters like Frieza the inability to tap into his higher transformations like Golden Frieza.

Furthermore, while likely the smartest Saiyan only contested by Future Trunks in that regard, he definitely has his hiccups in terms of letting his ego get to his head like most other Saiyans do, to the point he has been outsmarted by literal bubblegum. On top of this, like other Saiyans, Gohan can survive in the upper atmosphere and space for a time but…he can’t breathe in space, and would die to prolonged exposure.

Also he is REALLY, REALLY, bad at catching things.

Ultraman Zero

Ultraman Zero is among the greatest Ultras in the entire franchise, exceeding some of the most legendary heroes from across the cosmos. However, he isn't without his faults. Like the others of his kind, he has a potentially 3 minute time limit on Earth, though he partially compensates this with Protectors on his body that act as sunlight-absorbing devices like his father. Despite the Ultimate Bracelet only being damaged once before by Belial, if his opponent manages to do so, Zero’s ability to transform can be hindered. Should the bracelet break, Zero cannot go into any of his higher forms (Mode-Change, Ultimate, Shining or Ultimate Shining), and without Leito or assistance from the New Generation Ultras, he can't use either of his Beyond forms.

It's also worth noting that Zero’s amazing feats and illustrious reputation is also a weakness to an extent, as despite his immense talent and being worthy of all the praise he’s received, Zero has an extremely cocky personality. There are a few examples in his past battles where he doesn't take it as seriously as he should, which can get him in a bind and result in him being caught off guard.

Before The Verdicts…

What Is Up With Dragon Ball’s Afterlife?

One of the most highly contested and hotly debated elements of higher scaling for Dragon Ball is the idea that Dragon Ball’s Afterlife is a transcendent space that resides above Dragon Ball’s Living World, AKA our Universe. This idea comes primarily from the Daizenshuu, a guidebook series released throughout 1993 composed of 7 volumes, and has been referenced numerous times throughout fan discussion of the series as well as VS Debating shows like Death Battle. For all intents and purposes, any information in the Daizenshuu is canon unless later retconned, to the point where things like the DBS Manga released over 20 years after the Daizenshuu still hold true to things from it such as its depiction of the Universe.

For the actual quote the idea comes from itself, the Daizenshuu’s introduction to the Cosmos reads: \"天よりも高く、人間界からは窺い知ることができない次元を超越した天の国神々はこの地から世界のすべてを見おろしている \"; When translated into English, with this quote being done by Herms, one of Dragon Ball’s most trustworthy translators, it reads: “Higher than the sky, a dimensionally transcendental heavenly country that cannot be perceived from the human realm. From this land, the gods look down upon the entire world.”

With this in mind, this would have a very large ripple effect on many characters in Dragon Ball, even lower tier ones with arguments of scaling to the Shockwaves. However, this idea obviously isn’t perfect, and so will be split into two sections Arguing For and Arguing Against this idea. For clarity’s sake, due to the contentious nature of Dragon Ball stats beyond finite scaling, all 3 of Dragon Ball’s major non-finite scaling arguments will have their own Arguments For and Arguments Against mini-sections in the BTV’s.

Arguments For

To start with arguments for, while no Dragon Ball character in-universe starts talking about the laws of physics in relation to space-time, there are a few statements from various characters that can lend credence to the idea of the Afterlife transcending the Living World in a physical sense.

For starters, characters such as King Kai have referred to the Living World as the “corporeal world” while other characters such as Goku in the Buu Saga have established that time flows differently in the Afterlife, with Shin even referring to the Living World as the “temporal world” in comparison to the Afterlife. Furthermore, Heaven is referred to in the Daizenshuu as being as large as the universe (Living World), and makes up only a very small portion of Dragon Ball’s Cosmos overall, which can add to the idea of it transcending the Living World in literal size.

A simple and effective counterargument that can be made towards this idea is the fact that Herms’ translation as well as most translations specifically use the word “transcendental”, which more often than not relates to the spiritual rather than the spatial when it comes to dimensions, which would fit considering the Afterlife is, well, the place where people go when they die. This stance is valid, although just as one can argue its relation to the spiritual disavows it, one can also argue that the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive to each other.

It should be noted that the Kanji used to refer to it as “dimensionally transcendental” in this scan,「次元を超越」, traditionally refers to something being “unable to be analyzed in terms of our dimension” and has no specific ties to spirituality in particular. Take this specific anecdote with a grain of salt however, as nobody on this blog speaks Japanese and this particular anecdote could be completely off because of that.

For the final piece of supporting evidence, while nowhere near the canonicity of things like the Daizenshuu or even various video games, Dragon Ball Z: The Anime Adventure Game is a 1999 role-playing game book that was partly written by Cindy Fukunaga, an executive producer on much of Funimation’s Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z dubs, and pulled most of its information directly from the series itself as well as guidebooks and Toriyama’s own sketches. This book states in its section on the Cosmos, referred to as the Otherworld, that it is: ”another reality that isn’t connected to ours except on the most meta-physical level. It is not as simple as the Western concept of Heaven or Hell; It is an entirely separate universe that encompasses another level of reality.” This same book also details the Cosmos as “having higher dimensions.”

Obviously, this specific piece is incredibly shaky even as minor supporting evidence for reasons like original Funimation Dub of Dragon Ball’s…infamy, when it comes to how it altered the series. The book’s complete disconnection from seemingly anyone involved in the franchise in regards to its nation of origin in Japan can further muddy things, and this should again be considered at most a piece of minor supporting evidence to the arguments brought up earlier, if not just discarded entirely.

Overall, The Cosmos in Dragon Ball being a higher spatial construct is one that while not perfect can be argued as such, resulting in the destruction of the Dragon Ball Macrocosm as being potentially 5-D.

Arguments Against

No. We do not believe so. The vast majority of these statements utterly crumble under the weight of scrutiny.

Being stated to possess higher dimensions ultimately does not mean much, as “Dimension” is oftentimes used to refer to places, and not directions in space, and as such the term can easily be used in the same sense as "Higher Realm/Plane" and similar verbiage. Context should be used to determine whether it truly refers to increased dimensionality – in this case, no additional context is provided. Lacking time and being non-corporeal is good supporting evidence, but again, is ultimately irrelevant without conclusive evidence – and that brings us back to the crux of the higher-dimensional Afterlife arguments: the scan from the Daizenshuu mentioned at the beginning of this section.

It was stated to transcend dimensions, which… is not as simple as it sounds. Remember that context matters here. “Transcend” could mean to be or surpass / exceed / go beyond the range or limits of [the Living World]. The Kanji used for dimension is 次元, which translates to extra coordinates of dimensional space. Although, this need not necessarily mean it is a higher-dimensional space, but rather, it could simply just affirm that Heaven exists on a different dimensional axis and that the Kaioshin Realm is a different dimensional universe from the Living World, which is only backed up by the fact that the Afterlife has never been depicted as a construct with more extra dimensions of space; context is very much relevant here. This scan could just mean that the Afterlife is beyond the dimension that is the Mortal Realm / Living World (which is true) or et cetera. Herms’ translation of being “dimensionally transcendental” in particular goes against the notion of existing as a higher spatial dimension, funnily enough. “Transcendental” means relating to a spiritual or nonphysical realm. It's not saying it's a higher spatial dimension; it's reiterating that it's a spiritual plane. It's a dimensionally spiritual country that can't be perceived from the human world. This also makes more sense with how Heaven is consistently portrayed.

To conclude, the ‘evidence’ of the Afterlife being a higher spatial dimension is flawed and crumbles under the weight of scrutiny. It is most likely not 5-D.

What Actually IS The Dimension of Swirling Lights?

Back in 2022, an anime comic of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie was released to coincide with the release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero in Japan. While insignificant on the surface, this comic actually resulted in one of the more hotly debated aspects of modern Dragon Ball scaling, specifically, its detailing of the Strange Dimension of Swirling Lights. In Chapter 6 of the comic, which details most of Gogeta VS Broly’s fight in the movie, the fight is called “The Ultimate Superdimensional Battle!” with the kanji used in the anime comic meaning “higher dimensionality” in a spatial sense. The novelization from 2019 further adds to this, calling Gogeta & Broly’s fight a “battle beyond time and space.”

Like with other examples of Dimensional Tiering in Dragon Ball however, this obviously isn’t an open and shut discussion, and therefore will have its own Arguments For and Arguments Against sections like the Afterlife BTV above.

Arguments For

To start, unlike Heaven/The Cosmos, there is nothing to insinuate the idea of this referring to spiritual transcendence as the Dimension of Swirling Lights is explicitly referred to as a Superdimensional space. As stated above, the kanji used for superdimensional in the anime comic (超次元) means “beyond the order of dimensions/beyond higher dimensions” and only refers to dimensions in physics rather than anything relating to spirituality or religion.

Furthermore, the film very distinctly changes visual styles to that of 3D models during Gogeta and Broly’s time within this dimension, and returns back to its traditional 2D style once they escape, adding visual credence to the dimension differing greatly than Dragon Ball’s usual. The novelization for DBS: Broly, released in 2019, adds further to this idea of transcendence with the quote: “The boundary of the dimension could not withstand the energy released by them, and was torn apart.” Therefore, fitting with its description of superdimensional listed above, the DoSL was only accessed by Gogeta and Broly due to their power being too great for the current 3-D space they were fighting in.

While its validity is more debatable than the novelization or comic, the game Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle has the card “Surge of Heightened Fighting Spirit - Super Saiyan Broly” who upon transforming into his Super Saiyan (Full Power) state, shifts the battlefield to be that of the Dimension of Swirling Lights, with it being referred to as “Extradimensional Space” in-game, further supporting the ideas listed above of this dimension being a spatial one.

However, all of this can be discarded by the simple fact that the Dimension of Swirling Lights does not have any statements clarifying its size in relation to the 3-Dimensional space that makes up Dragon Ball’s universes. In spite of that, it can be argued that the intent behind this specific portion of Gogeta & Broly’s clash along with the evidence above is enough to justify this idea of transcendence, even without an exact clarification on the dimension’s size in comparison to Universe 7.

All in all, while it isn’t completely definitive, the Dimension of Swirling Lights is possibly Dragon Ball’s most viable avenue for breaking into dimensional tiering for the reasons listed above, and would put top tiers of the verse at 5-D.

Arguments Against

While the DoSL has less noticeable flaws from the outset compared to something like Heaven, it is still far from a completely sound argument for a variety of reasons.

To start, while Gogeta & Broly’s clash inside the dimension shifting the art style from 2D to 3D would on paper be a solid piece of evidence for transcendence, the issue arises in the fact that the same movie has an earlier fight between Goku and Broly using 3D models as well. The two are obviously not fighting in a higher spatial dimension at any point here, and it can therefore be argued that the shift in styles has nothing to do with trying to make the realm feel more immense/transcendent but rather just the movie reusing this 3D visual style again later on.

Furthermore, the lack of a confirmed size for the DoSL is a major slight against it being valid for dimensional tiering. By the very nature of dimensional transcendence, for something to truly be transcendent in a spatial lens, it must be (essentially) infinitely larger than the previous dimension. Think of it as how a square is a 2-D shape with length and width, while a cube is 3-D shape with length, width, and height. Although this distinction can appear minor on the surface, a lack of confirmation in terms of size can debunk potential ideas of transcendence, as a “4-D space” for example could only refer to a new direction of movement rather than an infinitely larger space then the previous one.

All in all, the DoSL’s lack of a confirmed size especially in regards to the idea of infinite transcendence traditionally necessary for dimensional tiering qualification prevents it from being a 5-D feat for Dragon Ball top tiers.

Let's talk about the Neutral Zone

A lesser known argument for higher-dimensional scaling in Dragon Ball – the Neutral Space is the space wherein all universes exist [in].  It was where the tournament between Universes 6-7 was held. It essentially separates and surrounds the 12 infinite-sized macrocosms, acting as a sort of bulk space that encompasses the multiverse. For this to be possible, it must possess an extra dimension of space, as it can embed infinitely-sized lower-dimensional constructs within itself; for these universes to never touch, they must be displaced across a plane with an extra coordinate axis. This can be likened to the concept of parallelism when relating to geometric dimensioning: if two lines segment (1-D) are parallel, they’d need to be collimated into not touching no matter how far each segment is extended, which would not be possible if they were displaced across another 1-D space; they’d need to be displaced across a two-dimensional plane. The same goes for 2-D planes, 3-D spaces, and so on and so forth. So by that logic, infinite-sized space-time continuums would need to be displaced across a higher-dimensional plane (higher-dimensional to the space-time continuums; at least 5-D), to exist in that manner. Thus, the Neutral Space must be a 5-D plane of existence.

What’s the deal with Infinite Zamasu?

One of the most complicated, yet integral characters when it comes to scaling in the Dragon Ball Super era is none other than Infinite Zamasu, the state that the previously Fused Zamasu finds himself in after being annihilated by Trunks’ Spirit Sword in the anime. Now for most discussions the debate simply stops at Zamasu’s spatial and temporal omnipresence, having become one with the very universe itself, is quite a strong feat to keep in mind when the Supreme Kai would indirectly compare him to the likes of Jiren or how statements place villains after Zamasu as more and more powerful as the series went on. Goku even comments one arc later that he's never been hit as hard as Jiren was hitting him in the Tournament of Power despite having taken direct attacks from Infinite Zamasu himself while even more injured and drained at the time. Additionally, according to Beerus himself actions taken by gods such as killing another god carry over into other timelines and will retroactively alter them, which is significant for what we’re about to discuss next.

So what’s so important about him that affects cosmology you ask? Well Zamasu is perhaps the series’ only example of a character physically interacting with the series’ temporal dimension. At the apex of his growth, before being erased by Zeno, Zamasu physically breaches in from Trunks' timeline to the main one and his Ki is sensed from across the universe by Beerus and Whis. This is incredibly significant because, as outlined in the series, parallel worlds and timelines are separate from one another and exist independently from one another. As far back as the Cell Saga we see this in Future Trunks’ inability to change his history comes from the fact that his act of time travel created a new branching path and a parallel world that was now detached and had no bearing on what happened in his world. When Zeno erases Future Trunks’ timeline, an act described as erasing the entirety of his history forever from reality, even after Bulma’s time machine had been upgraded to freely travel across time, there is no effect on the main timeline or any other timeline at all despite diverging only at relatively recent history.

In other words, in order for Zamasu to have appeared physically in another timeline he would need to breach and physically extend himself through the space between timelines, which is naturally beyond the scope of any physical space within a timeline and adding another level of dimensional scaling. This is independent of any of the rest of the cosmology scaling so regardless if you buy into Neutral Space and the Dimension of Swirling Lights being 5-D or not and believe the entire Dragon Ball Macrocosm is within a 4-D space time, you would always have to add another layer to dimensional tiering when accounting for scaling to or above Infinite Zamasu. We also know that this space doesn’t just come about from fan deduction or extrapolation, but the Black arc itself has acknowledged a higher temporal factor between timelines when it comes to time traveling, which we also see when it comes to the creation of new timelines and Time Rings being observable and their simultaneous destruction when a timeline is erased, as well as the fact that gods are able to influence this to a degree and have their actions affect and alter timelines. It isn’t necessarily given the most focus in the series admittedly, but it is all still clearly there and written as the reason why the cast can’t just time travel even further to fix everything.

Infinite/Immeasurable Speed Arguments for Dragon Ball

Alright so let’s talk about the… interesting speed feats for Dragon Ball. First and probably the most infamous in the series is in Goku’s iconic battle against Hit where, after activating Kaioken x10 in Super Saiyan Blue, he breached through the assassin’s Time-Skip ability. In the anime, he states that he’s demonstrated as moving within the technique, blocking Hit's attack, and stating he's beyond the technique's reach. The manga contains similar language with Goku being stated to be “breaking through” Time-Skip and further explanation from Whis that the technique is less effective against those with power equal or greater than Hit’s. The technique itself works on Hit stopping time for everyone but himself for fractions of time, promo material has described it as a time-stop, and Vados in the manga has referred to it as "freezing in place". It would get expanded upon in the anime as not being exactly time-stop, but Vados skirts around actually defining “Time-Skip” and instead she focused on describing how it stores the skipped time in a pocket dimension. Whether the case is Hit manifesting the pocket dimension to effectively stop time, entering it to see things as frozen in time, or something else entirely (it is kinda weird to say the pocket dimension is used for Time-Skip when Vados states Hit creates his pocket dimension from all the Time-Skips meaning Time-Skip came first as a technique), it all leads to the same end result: effectively stopping the flow of time.

Now that that’s all established, let’s look at a different instance of someone combating Hit’s abilities: Jiren. Unlike Goku’s statement of simply overpowering the Time-Skip, Jiren’s is that of "transcending time itself". While very similar to Goku’s statement of merely breaking through Time-Skip, note that the wording itself and context isn’t that Jiren is simply overpowering Hit’s technique. The entire point of Hit’s Cage of Time and all throughout his fight with Jiren was that Hit knew Jiren was far stronger than he was, and the Cage of Time was supposed to overcome him in spite of the strength difference. And again the distinction has been made previously of overpowering Hit & the technique vs directly talking about “transcending” time itself so the intention isn’t solely on overpowering or resisting a hax ability.

But is this all? Are Dragon Ball’s arguments really dependent on one definitely bunk feat that’s more of a hax resistance and a very questionable statement of “transcending” time? Well no. In fact, the way to get to non-finite speeds is very straight forward:

Yep, it’s that straight forward. Ki from the likes of BoG saga Goku have radiated across the universe to the Supreme Kai’s Realm which, as outlined in the cosmology section, does not exist in the same physical space. Even if you disagree entirely with many of the higher-D arguments made thus far, Ki radiating across the universe like that of Goku & Beerus’ clash would need to cross distances that are temporally and metaphysically separate from the universe to reach the Afterlife and Kaioshin Realm. Buuhan's Vice Shout would logically also reach infinite/immeasurable speeds for reaching across the different dimensions of the macrocosm. The Dimension of Swirling Lights is also itself "beyond" our space-time yet SSJ Broly and SSJ Gogeta’s clash reaches into that realm. And heck even casual combat from Gods of Destruction would result in the destruction of not just one, but two universes despite Neutral Space dividing the two universes. And lastly for further support, the Granolah arc concluded with the revelation that Rooms of Spirit & Time are considered separate from the rest of the universe, as shown when Frieza was exempt from being included as part of the “strongest in the universe” wishes made by Granolah and Gas just by being in one of the rooms, which would then imply Vegeta’s feat of destroying the RoSaT from within and his Ki reaching back out to the normal universe requires crossing an immeasurable distance. It can’t simply be a case of range if we see that Ki has to propagate and travel outwards from its source to reach such realms.

Tl;dr - Non-finite speed Dragon Ball comes from the fact that inherently a lot of the different dimensions that make up even a single universe are separate space-times. Ki is always shown to propagate from their source, meaning Ki crossing these realms requires it to have been traveling at immeasurable speeds inherently.

Higher Dimensional Ultraman

As you may have noticed, there are some interesting statements from characters and guidebooks regarding higher dimensions throughout the franchise..but, are they valid? Are they just ramblings? Do the dimensions even qualify as such?

Yes. These higher dimensions do follow the requirements needed to be higher dimensional in nature. Let's take the 4th dimension as an example. Contrary to its name, it’s not actually the ‘fourth dimension’, but more so the Fifth. A 4D space is just a universe along with the time axis, but the 4th dimension is much more than that in Ultraman. Golgoda, a far away planet in the 4th Dimension/Anti-Matter universe, was stated by one of the scientists to be impossible to attack from the 3rd dimension  and the context was that they needed to destroy it to save Earth, so there's no reason for him to be rambling non-sense. Not only that, but Ace travelling to Golgoda has been described as him "breaking through dimensions" and "going to other dimensions.”

For more consistency, Yapool’s bio states this: "The fourth dimension is something humans cannot even imagine, nor can they reach it, and for that reason, he is not clearly visible on television," referring to the 4th dimension and the reason why he isn't properly shown in the series. Not only that, but the same thing is repeated in Ultraseven series where Alien Icarus who is a resident of 4th dimension states that humans cannot even see or attack it, and Dan Moroboshi, the host of Ultraseven, was unable to transform in the 4th dimension because his device wasn't capable of working in that place.

Similarly, as established earlier, the base universe is infinite in size and time has been explicitly referred to as an axis other than the 3 axes of space , and they are still infinitely below the other dimensions, so that's further proof of it being a higher dimension.

Another clear example of higher dimensionality is the Hyperspace encompassing the multiverse. The exact word used used here is 超空間 or Chō kūkan, which means Hyperspace or Superspace and is for dimensions beyond the normal 3 dimensions, and yet again, it contains an infinite number of bubble universes.

In short, the higher dimensions are very explicitly higher dimensional from context, their nature, and the way they are depicted across the series.

What is the hierarchy of these realms you may ask? Well, for a simplified explanation on the hierarchy, we got:

Universe/Timeline → ‘4th’ dimension → other potential dimensions in the Bubble Universe/Bubble Universe → Hyperspace/Bulk-Spaces → Waterfall of Time

How does Zero scale to all of this?

Pretty simple. From some of the earliest entries in the franchise, Ultras like Ultraman and Seven have defeated higher dimensional entities (Bullton and Alien Icarus respectively), and other Ultras have followed in their footsteps defeating other higher dimensional foes like Yapool or beings who can destroy the universe like Antimatter or Alien Empera. As we’ve established multiple times throughout this blog, Zero is arguably the strongest Ultra of all time besides King and Noa, so he can reasonably defeat the same enemies as the other Ultras.

There's also a more direct line of scaling through Zero’s rival, Ultraman Belial. Belial caused the Crisis Impact with the Super Dimensional Bomb, which was going to destroy the universe and affect the Waterfall of Time as well as shattering the guardian of time’s body. And famously, Belial tanked the bomb detonating right in his face. As previously mentioned, the universe in Ultraman is much bigger than a normal universe, housing several higher dimensions like Yapool's dimension and the bomb was going to all of this on top of effecting the Waterfall of Time, had Ultraman King not interfered. It's also worth noting that when Belial Atrocious started absorbing King’s energy from throughout the universe, it was going to trigger a second Crisis impact. Despite his insane power, Zero during the events of Ultraman Geed fought Belial multiple times and kept up with him, not to mention, current Zero has surpassed Belial Atrocious thanks to his training and facing foes that are explicitly more powerful like Absolute Tartarus.

R>F Ultraman

So what's the deal with R>F Ultraman? Is it valid? Let's take a look at it and see what it's all about. There are 3 primary pieces of evidence for R>F in Ultraman: Chajira from Ultraman Tiga, Bunda from Ultraman Dyna and lastly, Madeus from Ultraman Max. Like a few other sections in this blog, we will be splitting this up into arguments for and arguments against segments as there were disagreements among the participants on this blog.

A quick rundown of what R>F is for those unaware:

R>F stands for Reality-Fiction Transcendence, which simply means in powerscaling, the idea that some characters, or realms, can transcend other characters/realms entirely, to a point of viewing said character/realm as entirely fictional, the same way we as humans view our favorite TV show or movie as just fiction; not real. But this concept has also paved its way into many franchises, often represented as an author looking over his/her creation, being qualitatively superior (or “more real”) to their creations, and this idea of a “real world” is found within Ultraman! So the question is, is it applicable to the Ultraman franchise, and can Zero benefit from such monumental scaling?

Arguments For

Let’s go one-by-one over the explanation. Starting off with the first being Charija from Tiga. Charija is an alien who travels to different universes essentially in search of monsters to take as his own. Throughout these various adventures he frequently mentions the legend Eiji Tsuburaya who if you aren't aware, is the creator of the Ultraman franchise. In the Ultraman Tiga show, Charija appears as a suit wearing human who wants to find monster Yanakagi and a kid tells him to go to Tsuburaya Productions as they make monsters, which leads to the main plot of the episode in which Charija goes back in time to 1965 to meet Eiji Tsuburaya (who also created Godzilla and Mothra here btw). It's a weird 4th wall breaking episode where it is shown that it was the Original Ultraman who inspired Tsuburaya to create the Ultraman series and fought Yanakagi with Tiga. This may seem like a weird situation where Eiji Tsuburaya is a person inside the universe of Tiga who was merely inspired to create a show based on the actual Ultraman at first glance….but there are issues with this.

Firstly, not only does this break the continuity of the franchise in a big way, and secondly, it's also not supposed to be that. The episode is a kind of tribute to Eiji Tsuburaya, which shows his struggles and how he managed to create Ultraman with the whole 4th wall breaking angle added to it and the Tiga, Dyna & Ultraman Gaia: Beyond Time and Space Novel also shows that it’s not just an in-universe thing. Charija makes it a point to consistently mention that he’s aware that Eiji Tsuburaya created the Ultraman franchise stating that both him and the world of Ultraman are deeply connected to each other by an unknown energy. This, along with Charija’s gag nature and knowledge about the series, imply that in this specific world sees another Ultraman series as fiction, at least Charija specifically does and so does anyone else powered by this energy.

Fortunately, we actually know what this energy is. In Ultraman Max, we meet Hasunumo, a writer in the real world who works for Tsuburaya Productions and is currently working on a script for an Ultraman Max episode. In the episode, he is dreaming about being the same as Kaito (the host of Max) and sees a woman whom he names The Monster Maker. The Monster maker was tired of monsters constantly losing to monsters and wanted to destroy the real world. So what was her solution? She starts creating a monster named “Madeus,” a name derived from the troupe deus ex machina, by manipulating Hasunumo/Kaito into creating and literally writing it into the existence of a formless, substanceless being which devours Humanity’s dreams. In the end, Kaito (who is essentially Hasunumo’s avatar) with the help of Hasunumo rewrites the story by making Max stronger than Madeus, which allows him to defeat Madeus before it destroys the Real World by entering it. Still with me? Good.

So, through the episode, we can say that the energy source mentioned earlier by Charija is none other than Humanity’s Imagination and Dreams. That’s why the monster maker manipulated Hasunumo/Kaito into creating Madeus because his imagination was the energy, and this is why Eiji Tsuburaya was capable of creating Ultraman. Imagination fuels stories afterall. But are we sure that Max’s world and Hasunumo’s world have a Reality-Fiction relation? Yes, actually. Not only is it treated as a fictional series and stated to be as such multiple times, but there is an entire several minute long segment in the episode about Kaito realising that his world is fiction and the monster maker confirming this. For further proof, the episode highlights the poem, "the dream of a butterfly," where Chuang Zu dreamt of being a butterfly and the butterfly being him which is heavily emphasized in the episode as whenever hasunumo dreams of being kaito, we see butterflies and whenever the monster maker appears there’s butterfly symbolism. It’s a very philosophical episode but it makes it very clear that these worlds are apart, literally.

Our next showcase of such a transcendence comes from Bunda, who you may recognize from the plot manipulation part in the resistance section. Bunda is a kaiju that was created by Hiroya Narumi as part of a stage play but became real. It is stated to be “invincible” as narumi sealed  off the ending to its story and made sure that it will win in the end, and it also views reality as a catastrophic theatrical space which it can manipulate freely in the episode. Narumi created it because he wanted Kaijus to win (wait a second where have i seen this befo-) and even thought of the Ultras as being “GOD” of the story, so he created Bunda into a reality from his weird imagination realm (exactly like The Monster Maker). But in the end, Dyna managed to overpower Bunda’s reality warping (literally, epilepsy warning) and destroy the theatrical space. As you can see, Narumi and The Monster Maker  have some very clear similarities, and even the episodes that they feature in have heavy emphasis on reality, fiction, dreams and imagination.

As for why Zero specifically would scale to these, it's rather simple. Much like Dragon Ball and other franchises, Ultra’s are constantly training and getting stronger, with each subsequent warrior of light introduced usually being stated to be stronger than the previous one along with facing new and more powerful opponents, clipping enemies of the past. To keep it simple we’ll just examine a small chain.

1. Madeus scaling:  By the end of the episode Max is stronger than Madeus who can destroy the real world thanks to being amped by Imagination, and there’s nothing which proves or even suggests that to be the case. The next show is Ultraman Mebius with the young Ultra being considered the strongest warrior at the time of his debut. So Mebius>Max>Madeus. We’ve also mentioned Belial soloing the Land of Light a few times now. Guess what happened when Max fought Belial. Yeah it didn't go well for him and Zero has obviously defeated Belial before so the scaling chain looks something like this: Zero>Belial>Mebius>Max>Madeus.

2. Bunda Scaling: Bunda is a monster made up of Imagination which sees the normal world as a fictional theatrical space and was going to destroy the real world as emphasized by Narumi, and Dyna overpowered his powers and defeated it. Narumi’s explanation of Ultras and their position in the story as similar to GOD also backs up that Dyna should easily scale to Bunda. I mean, he quite literally overwrote the sealed ending via his power and Zero just upscales him.

3. Charija Scaling: Pretty simple. Tiga and Dyna scale to Charija who should be at a similar level to Madeus or Bunda and the reason behind him trying to find the unknown energy sphere is simply because it was more powerful than him so no contradictions there. And, Zero upscales both of them. Pretty simple.

Arguments Against

The Reality-Fiction relation shown in the episodes are.. frankly speaking, not that good.
There are some serious inconsistencies and contextual issues that make applying R>F scaling to characters like Madeus, Bunda, or even Charija questionable at best.

Let’s start with Madeus from Ultraman Max, since he’s often cited as the clearest example of this supposed “reality-to-fiction” transcendence. While the episode does show Madeus growing stronger and seemingly moving toward breaching the “real world,” it’s crucial to note that he never actually reaches that point. The entire premise hinges on the potential of Madeus and not it happening. Madeus’ rise in power is halted specifically because of Hasunumo (the writer) and Kaito (the host of Ultraman Max) by the use of imagination energy to write his defeat into existence. In other words, Madeus is defeated before he ever achieves true transcendence beyond his own fictional setting.

This makes the idea that Madeus has the energy to an R>F level fundamentally flawed. He was powered by imagination, not equal to it. Being connected to a higher-order energy doesn’t automatically mean one scales to its full potential, just as Kid Goku using Ki doesn’t make him comparable to Ultra Instinct Goku, or Episode 1 Simon from Gurren Lagann isn’t comparable to Super Tengen Toppa Simon simply because both draw on Spiral Power. The difference in degree and in narrative intent is enormous. So while Madeus is indeed born from the imagination of a writer who exists in a higher world, that doesn’t make him coequal with or transcendent over that world. If anything, his defeat proves the opposite: that he’s subject to that higher narrative force, not capable of breaching it. He’s powerful within the story’s context, yes, but he never becomes greater than it.

Moving on to Bunda from Ultraman Dyna, the situation becomes even clearer. Bunda’s abilities are centered around reality warping and narrative manipulation — his “theatrical space” is more of a metaphysical construct than an indication of physical or existential superiority. The creature manipulates the structure of its story, altering “reality” within its own setting to fulfill the creator’s vision. But that’s still internal logic not external transcendence. Bunda doesn’t use R>F scaling as a measure of physical power. Scaling him in physical or even existential terms to a higher plane of being because of this would be a stretch. At best, what we see is localized plot manipulation, not true Reality-Fiction transcendence.

Taking a look at Charija from Ultraman Tiga, who can said to travel between worlds and is aware of Eiji Tsuburaya as the creator of Ultraman series, The arguments start to wobble as Charija’s awareness of Tsuburaya doesn’t automatically establish a qualitative gap between “real” and “fictional” realms. In fact, many of these examples arguably suggest the opposite, that the worlds of Ultraman and their supposed “real” counterparts are fundamentally intertwined. The Tiga episode in question is clearly meant as a tribute as in a meta-narrative reflection on how imagination and inspiration feed into each other. It’s not meant to establish a strict hierarchy of “real > fiction.” If Charija, an in-universe being, can interact directly with Eiji Tsuburaya without any intermediary “transcendent” mechanism, that suggests that the barrier between fiction and reality in the Ultraman mythos isn’t absolute. It’s porous and symbolic, not a literal hierarchy of being.

This same idea extends to Hasunumo and Kaito in Ultraman Max. The way their relationship is portrayed as ‘two people dreaming of each other’s worlds, influencing and even switching places’  doesn’t present one as being fundamentally more “real” than the other. Instead, the show goes out of its way to blur the lines between them. The recurring butterfly imagery, a reference to Zhuangzi’s “Dream of the Butterfly,” makes this explicit: are we the dreamers or the dream? Which world is “real”? The entire philosophical point of the episode is that such distinctions may not exist in a meaningful way. If anything, the episode seems to argue against a strict Reality-Fiction divide. Both worlds influence each other equally. Hasunumo’s imagination gives birth to monsters, but his experiences as Kaito in the “fictional” world feed back into his own creativity, creating a recursive loop where neither side can claim superiority.

So, when it comes down to it, many of the so-called R>F examples in Ultraman actually demonstrate interconnectedness rather than transcendence. The energy that fuels these interactions, Imagination, is universal across both realms. It’s not exclusive to one “real” world looking down upon another, but a shared force that binds them together.
Therefore, while the R>F interpretation makes for an interesting powerscaling discussion, the actual evidence within the shows paints a more nuanced picture. These stories aren’t about the superiority of reality over fiction, but about how both coexist and how the act of creation blurs boundaries rather than enforces them. Whether it’s Charija’s meta-awareness, Bunda’s theatrical manipulation, or Madeus’ defeat through imagination, each case reinforces a thematic unity between worlds, not a transcendental divide.

In short: the idea of R>F Ultraman may sound appealing on paper, but when you actually analyze the episodes, it falls apart under scrutiny. The supposed “higher realms” aren’t higher at all, just different expressions of the same creative energy that defines Ultraman at its core.

In the end, we aren’t using the R>F args for the verdict as it’s still up for debate on whether it is valid or not and it will not have any impact on the outcome of this blog. The purpose of this segment was to take a proper look at these aspects of the series and present them in an informational and easy to digest way to everyone reading this blog.

Immeasurable Speed Ultraman

As you may have already noticed, several Ultraman feats have been marked as Immeasurable in the blog and for good reasons. Here we are going to discuss them in a bit more detail.

“Light speed” and 4th Dimension

One thing that's important to clarify is how Light Speed is portrayed in the Ultra Series. In most sci-fi or superhero settings, "light speed" is treated like a hard limit or generally it is the same as it is in our world and operates under the familiar rules of physics. But Ultraman doesn’t exactly follow our real-world physics in this department.

In the Ultra Series, light speed isn’t actually just 299792458 meters per second, instead it is much, much faster. Characters who approach the speed of light begin to interact with higher spatial dimensions, specifically the 4th Dimension which has been repeatedly stated to be a higher dimension and operates differently from the 3rd Dimension. Surpassing the speed of light allows characters to travel into dimensions completely inaccessible from the normal dimension like the Anti-Matter Universe for example. Ace travelled to Golgoda in the Anti-Matter universe by travelling faster than light as stated verbatim.

Flying through Time and Space

Several characters have shown the capability to travel through Time and Space throughout the series like Ace and Tiga. This also relates to their combat and reaction speeds as other characters and kaijus are able to tag the Ultras mid-flight and naturally their own reaction speed would need to scale to their flight speed to navigate through the multiverse.

Crossing the Universe and Multiverse

Since each universe bubble in Ultra-Series contains multiple spatial-dimensions and a myriad of other infinite sized dimensions existing concurrently, it's logical that any feat where a character crosses it or crosses the multiverse would be Immeasurable. As you might expect several characters have traversed the multiverse through speed alone including Father of Ultra traveling to Geed’s universe, Ultraman Cosmos and Ultraman Justice flying from their universe to the Land of Light’s universe and Zero flying to a different universe alongside Z to chase a kaiju that stole weapons from the Land of Light. Geed and Ace also flew to and from Z’s Earth to different universes, so traveling to different universes is a very casual feat for Ultras to perform. Thus immeasurable speed for Ultraman characters is very consistent and applies to Zero as he has performed several of these feats himself and scales to others who have done the same.

Stats

Both Gohan and Zero draw from an incredible and frankly absurd pool of power, with comparisons that honestly could go either way depending on how you look at it.

For Gohan, his Beast form essentially puts him near the top of the Dragon Ball’s heaviest hitters when it comes to mortals and likely even comparability to certain Gods of Destruction. This places him far and above feats such as Goku gathering Genki at Decillions of times light speed during the Buu Saga and battles that affected the entirety of the Universe 7 Macrocosm such as against Buuhan or Beerus, with Universe 7 being up to thousands of times larger than ours in size. But these are just finite ends mind you. As outlined earlier, realms in Dragon Ball like the Dimension of Swirling Lights or Neutral Space are higher-D bulk spaces all within a larger timeline that past foes like Zamasu, who is inferior to Jiren, have encompassed. While your mileage and standards on dimensional tiering may vary, this is all upscaling 5 to 6-Dimensional structures. And on this train of thought, it would require Ki to possess Immeasurable speeds to even reach such cosmological structures and travel through dimensions in the first place, which of course Gohan would scale to given he can dodge Ki blasts from the likes of Goku and many other characters who scale to him.

Meanwhile Zero’s also in a similar position for being one of the strongest Ultras in the Ultra Series as a whole. Ultraman Victory and Vakashim’s clashes and both Diavalo and Belial are inherently universal in scale. Many Ultras have also demonstrated the capacity to fly across vast distances throughout the universe, across and outside the universe as well getting up to Quadrillions of times faster than light. Just like Dragon Ball, Ultra Series’ cosmology contains higher realms like the 4th Dimension and Yapool’s realm which brings the cosmology up to 5-D, with other higher spaces like the Graveyard, Hyperspace, and the Waterfall of Time being above these structures and adding another layer to dimensional tiering: 6-D. Ultras have been demonstrated as traveling across these realms and thus scaling to the likes of Ace, Tiga, and Aegis or Zero himself traversing the Waterfall of Time would be Immeasurable

So all-in-all if we looked at things from a numbers perspective, Gohan just kind of dominates the battle. It’s roughly baseline universal vs well over a thousand times universal. Quadrillions of times faster than light vs a Decillion times faster than light. If we looked at this battle purely from a numerical standpoint, Gohan would slaughter Ultraman Zero. However looking at the grander cosmology of both series tells a different story. Both Dragon Ball and the Ultra Series showcase fundamentally several higher-dimensional spaces than what the plain physical universe would entail, both reaching at about 5-Dimensional, with leeway in interpretation bringing us to 6-D. Not to mention the scaling chains are fairly large by this point for both characters as current Gohan scales astronomically far beyond anyone in the Buu Saga just in his base form while his Beast form is many, many times above Infinite Zamasu and possibly lower forms like his Ultimate form could scale above him as well given the frankly gross power jumps in the Tournament of Power. Ultraman Zero however more than compares to that long scaling chain, as while he lacks a lot of the hard multipliers we can stack on Dragon Ball characters, Zero scales above quite literally a generational line of Ultras, which on their own have crazy high multipliers in double, triple, or even quintuple digits

Therefore we’ll have to call this section a tie, as neither have a significant lead over the other in stats.

Arsenal & Abilities

While power may have been possibly anyone’s game, what these two have to show for in their abilities besides that tell a different tale.

Gohan possesses a wide array of Ki techniques learned from the universe’s greatest warriors. While a lot of them can be written off as just “Ki blast variation #67” or something like that, the Special Beam Cannon can amplify Gohan’s already ridiculous power as we’ve seen it do so for the likes of Piccolo (i.e. an SSJ to SSB level type increase as we’ve seen in the Tournament of Power when against the two U6 Namekians). And as with most Z-Fighters, Senzu Beans are also an important part of Gohan’s arsenal. Even if he’s limited to just two or three like most Z-Fighters find themselves with, that’s still something that can grant Gohan not only a chance to restore himself from fatigue and injury but let him take advantage of a Saiyan’s natural Zenkai Boost and grow stronger mid-battle.

But, of course, Zero has a lot more to offer on the table. His weapons like Zero Sluggers, Zero Mantle, or the Zero Lance give Ultraman Zero an extended advantage when it comes to reach and general versatility in melee and defense. The Ultimate Bracelet also restores Zero’s energy for up to several times and even duplicates himself and creates an identical copy. He’s got teleportation, telekinesis, size changing, sleep manipulation, sealing capabilities, power nullification, regeneration that can heal sizable wounds to his body, the ability to reverse time to save himself from danger, and the capacity to fight on instinct.

All of these are quite ridiculous and make it seem as if Zero just slides this category… but it’s not quite simple. For a lot of what Zero’s capable of, there isn’t much in his arsenal that Gohan hasn’t taken on before or other characters comparable to him have overcome. As an example, Ultraman Zero’s sealing, scaling it from other Ultras who perform it, works on the basis of trapping someone in an alternate dimension… to which several characters Gohan’s associated with can more than easily escape as we’ve seen with Gotenks, Vegeta, and Gogeta just from sheer raw power. Heck his power was a massive contributor to that of Buuhan’s who could rip apart space-time into other dimensions just by yelling, much less literally punching through dimensions akin to Broly and Gogeta. Power nullification is something Gohan has also walked through as far back as the events of Bojack Unbound, empathic and mental attacks have been resisted by both Goku and Vegeta such as against Babidi or Goku resisting Sleepy Boy’s technique, Ki inherently blocking out atomization and spiritual attacks, also possessing the ability to affect space-time, and more. Essentially all of Zero’s most effective abilities and potential 1-shot options end up useless against Gohan. Not to mention several of such abilities come entirely from scaling to the other Ultras and Zero himself has never performed them directly. Not that he can’t do them, just that an in-character Zero never has (with the same case being true for his illusion manip beyond afterimages, something Gohan encounters in combat all the time).

Ultimately though, we’d be remiss not to point out that even if all of Ultraman Zero’s abilities fall short of bringing Gohan down a peg, there’s no getting past the Ultra-sized elephant in the room: Zero is freaking huge! The dude just has an inherent size advantage which can be altered if need be and a fair number of weapons to boot, as well as his own bag of energy attacks and techniques akin to Gohan’s own set like Fire Spark, Wide Zero Shot, and Emerium Slash. Plus while Saiyan Zenkai boosts are generally larger, it’s not as if Zero can’t also amp himself letting him keep up with the half-Saiyan. And duplicating himself? That’s a rather major advantage even if it’s something Gohan has dealt with like in the Tournament of Power.

Abilities & Arsenal go to Ultraman Zero!

Tertiary Factors

When physical capabilities prove to be essentially even and character versatility just barely edges out for Zero, tertiary factors like skill and experience become vital to deciding the debate.

Zero’s training with his brothers was incredibly intensive and can match the likes of Ultraman Regulos with his Cosmo Beast Style and Belial whose skill remained as one of the best in the multiverse even after he was sealed for a thousand years. Zero developed his own speedy fighting style while being taught by the greatest space martial arts masters, Leo and Astra, and all in all his potential was considered to be unlimited when it came to combat. Having fought a wide variety of opponents helps too with experience that spans several thousands of years, Zero is at a ridiculous level of combat skill and experience no human can match…

…but Son Gohan is no mere human. While he doesn’t necessarily possess a lot of skill, Gohan is undoubtedly a far superior martial artist by virtue of training with the likes of his father and Piccolo. Kid Goku who was already at a level where he could match Grandpa Gohan, a man stated to be unparalleled in all martial arts. Gohan would also trounce the likes of Cell, who was made from both the DNA from and information gathered by watching and following all the battles of the Z-Fighters as well as combat data gathered by the time of Frieza’s arrival on Earth. In their latest and most recent bout, Gohan in his Beast form managed to match, knock down, and briefly gain the advantage in his fight against Ultra Instinct Goku. A Goku who by this point could adapt rapidly to the thousand year old assassin Hit even as Hit himself was growing rapidly and improving his techniques during combat, can take on the millions of years old Beerus (though he was ultimately holding back), best Jiren who trained and became superior to his God of Destruction Belmod (who’s had the position for 88 million days), and a Goku whose sheer skill consistently lets him keep up with far stronger opponents with adaptability powers such as Caulifla, Kale, and Broly even without activating Ultra Instinct, which dials all of that up to eleven.

So as much as the thousands of years of training Zero has, Gohan has been trained by people who are already superior to that level of experience & skill and his latest and final bout as of this blog involves him beating his father, the poster boy of skill in Dragon Ball. This isn’t of course to say Gohan is more skilled than Goku, but he’s absolutely in that same realm of skill and the fact that Goku can typically match and overcome power gaps even while tired and exhausted and outnumbered speaks volumes for Gohan’s advantage over him in their bout.

Son Gohan takes Tertiaries.

Endurance

So now we have a surprise secret category, Endurance! Ultimately in a contest as close as this, who can take the most hits and still stay standing to dish out more is integral to the debate.

For Gohan, his most recent battle concluded with battling and sparring alongside Goku, Vegeta, Broly, Goten, and Trunks until the point all of them were tired, which would have spanned at least an hour given a weaker Broly could fight against Frieza non-stop for a full hour after having already spent a long amount of time having fought Goku and Vegeta until a properly formed Gogeta arrived. Gohan was also a participant of the 48 minute-Tournament of Power and did not show exhaustion even by the time he was knocked out. He’s trained with Goku intensely for long periods of time for an entire year within the Room of Spirit & Time and could spend an entire day fighting non-stop with Goku. Future Trunks has described multiple days and nights of non-stop training without sleep or rest in the RoSaT that was incredibly harsh and constantly pushing him to the brink. And to add to that, Gohan not only has Senzu Beans to revive himself but Zenkai Boosts do provide a second wind to stamina as shown by the many times Goku is pummeled in the ToP but not only gets back up, but gets back up stronger to the point his “exhausted” state can keep up with a suppressed Jiren in SSB.

Zero meanwhile… Is harder to quantify. His fights with the robo-Ultra Brothers and Ultraseven were on and off for around 2 weeks given we’re shown him sitting and waiting for them to arrive before battle. Sometime after that fight he goes on to fight Mecha Gomora and Darklops Zero suggesting he can fight for long periods and recover relatively quickly. Similarly, the 6 day chase isn’t exactly clear. When Princess Emerana is kidnapped, Zero and company are simply dumbfounded and aren’t shown to give chase. They simply appear to rescue her 6 days later and are stated to have needed to expend Noa’s power to cross the universe and that it wouldn't be usable for a while (16:18). While he has partaken in long fights, he doesn’t really have anything Gohan has already demonstrated. One of his next best stamina feats is fighting alongside Geed against Belial from afternoon to daytime, and comparing to the Ultra Brothers, who fought an army of ravenous kaijus in the Monster Graveyard despite being exhausted very quickly with their powers nerfed after the Plasma Spark was out of commission, still standing up even after taking strong attacks from them and the Giga-Battlenizer, with Zero himself having constantly fought Leo in Tector Gear which was heavily restricting him, and yet still managed to immediately fight Belial and his monster army after that.

While Zero can rejuvenate himself, it’s still a far cry from several days non-stop + Senzu Beans + Zenkai Boosts giving Gohan a second wind. Not to mention even if Gohan weren’t in Beast, his weaker forms by this point in the series are ridiculously powerful. The frankly ridiculous power growth from the Tournament of Power led to base Goku by the end of it fighting comparatively to Android 17, who himself had grown to fight Jiren alongside SSB Goku & SSBE Vegeta, who were treated as superior to Goku’s previous transformation into UI Omen and Beerus believed they stood more of a chance against Jiren to that point. Given Gamma 1, 2, and Cell Max’s statements of being relative to Post-ToP Goku & Vegeta by the likes of Piccolo and WoG, base Gohan likely would already in fact above characters (namely Infinite Zamasu) that scale to the higher dimensions of the cosmology. Altogether meaning he can more than afford to power down to less energy intensive forms like Ultimate or Super Saiyan, especially with Zenkais, and still keep up with Zero.

So surprisingly, we believe Gohan takes this category.

Conclusion

”One thing I learned from my father is to never give up, even when the odds are stacked against you.”

Advantages:

  • Higher Finite ends (even if using Infinite Ends)

  • Way more skilled

  • Superior endurance

  • Resists most of Zero’s abilities and hax…

  • They call him the sandwich

  • Is married to Videl (the GOAT)

  • Has made the cutest bean of a daughter

Disadvantages:

  • Potentially lower and less consistent Infinite Ends

    • Beast form, which Gohan requires to match Zero’s highest stats, will strain his body and is hard to control

  • Far less experienced

  • Less versatility in both abilities and arsenal

  • …but doesn’t have direct counters to his other options like extreme heat, duplication and size manipulation

  • Lesser stamina and resilience

  • Regeneration has a finite power supply

  • Literally Potential Man

  • Never was good with catching

So while this debate was terribly close, it all comes down to stamina. Both Gohan & Zero scale to their cosmologies to the point that their base forms can be argued to scale to such structures, with upscaling and powerful forms to stack on top of all that. So while in any other battle Zero’s even marginal advantage in arsenal and abilities would let him take the lead, Gohan’s greater skill and experience with all the tricks Zero can pull out (that he doesn’t already resist) being things he’s encountered before means all he has to do is just outlast Zero. While Zero’s stamina can scale for up to just under a full day, even Teen Gohan’s training with Goku have reached similar lengths and Trunks can go on for a full day or days even without sleep or rest training to his limit. Both their restorative abilities are comparable and while Zero’s regen is ultimately much better, it’s not something that can’t be overtaxed by lengthy combat (10:30).

While hardly any power in the cosmos could take on the Ultra from the Stars, Gohan had everything he needed to Ultimately take the win, proving he was too much of a Beast to handle and brought this Ultraman’s chances of victory to Zero. The winner is Son Gohan.

Team Ultraman Zero

Stats

The Half-Blooded Saiyan is no pushover, currently he is the strongest fighter Earth has, which will likely stay that way for some time. This means he's above the likes of Goku and Broly. With God Ki, Goku can match blows with the God of Destruction Beerus with their clash famously nearly destroying the entirety of Universe 7, a cosmological structure at least 13-1500× larger than our own, in finite ends at least. In higher ends, the Cosmology of Universe 7 would potentially be pushed to a 5-6 Dimensional structure, though the latter is pushing it. Meanwhile Broly in his clash with Gogeta destroyed the dimension of swirling lights and is more powerful than Infinite Zamasu breaching through timelines all of which also reach potentially 5 to 6-D. In terms of speed, Goku gathered Ki from across the Universe, which would get Quadrillions to Decillions times the speed of light. However, since the shockwaves from Goku and Beerus’ clash traveled across all of Universe 7 and even effected the realm of the Kais, it likely gets to incalculable levels of speed. For much higher, Gohan is potentially above Infinite Zamasu, who could react to Zeno erasing him and Future Trunks’ entire timeline which is a potentially Immeasurable feat on top of others like Jiren being stated to transcend time through his strength alone. So at his best, Gohan would be around Multi-5-D with arguments for 6-D in terms of strength and Infinite-Immeasurable in regards to speed.

Next up is the son of Ultraseven, Zero who is considered one of the strongest Ultras in the series, meaning he's not only comparable to other Ultras, he's also on par with Kaiju and other villains. For power, he scales to feats like Ultraman Victory and Vakashim causing shockwaves across dimensions in their fight, sounds familiar, doesn't it? There's also other universe destruction feats like Absolute Diavalo destroying two universes and Ultraman Belial who can survive his own Super Dimensional Bomb, which was threatening to destroy Ultraman Geed's universe. Destroying universes in Ultraman would also mean destroying several higher dimensional structures like the 4th Dimension which is unreachable by humanity and Yapool’s dimension which is beyond our imagination making these feats at least 5-D, but there's far more to it for Belial's feat, as it was stated to be able to effect the Waterfall of Time, which would be at least 6-D, similar to Gohan's highest end. In terms of speed, Zero himself is able to travel across universes (which are infinite in size), with other Ultras like Ace and Tiga being able to travel across time and space. Zero’s Ultimate Aegis’ also gives him the ability to transcend dimensions and fly to other universes. Then there's traveling to the Monster Graveyard which exists across multiple universes and is described as violating the laws of physics and phases of space, so Zero is consistently hitting Immeasurable speed. With that in mind, Zero at his best would be Uni+-Multi+, with Dimensional tiering getting him to 5-6D at least. As for speed, his best finite speed feats would be Quadrillions to Quintilions times the speed of light by scaling to other Ultras like Zoffy.

Overall, this depends on how you interpret both, as both have similar ends and not so similar ends. Gohan is finitely stronger and faster via universe size and multipliers, as Dragon Ball's universe would be bigger than Ultraman's and their speed feats not only match Ultraman's speed feats, but also get significantly higher. However, everything changes when we get into dimensional tiering. Both would scale to their cosmological structures, with both getting to a level of an Infinite Multiverse, and having Higher dimensional arguments. Unlike Dragon Ball though, Ultraman's higher dimensional arguments are more direct compared to Dragon Ball, meaning that he possesses better means of potentially scaling infinitely higher, though this is up to interpretation, as you could get both to a similar level if given equal leeway although it is debatable in our opinion if Gohan can reach this peak without his strongest forms. For the sake of argument however, we will be putting both fighters at equal stats.

Arsenal & Abilities

It's time to look at their arsenals and various powers that they bring to the table. Starting with their arsenals Zero takes a clear edge here. Gohan's arsenal is rather limited in comparison with his main item being Senzu beans. These are obviously quite helpful as they can restore Gohan back to his peak condition instantly, but his supply is limited and the beans can be very easily destroyed if the opponent chooses to target them. Zero, on the other hand, has a few handy tools at his disposal. His Zero Sluggers provide him with a very effective long or close range attack and are one of several other melee centric accessories he possesses. Zero carries with him the Ultra Zero Lance which also turns into the Ultra Zero Defender shield, both handy for close quarters. He also has his Ultimate Aegis armor, which can also turn into a shield. Lastly is his cape, the Ultra Zero Mantle which, you guessed it, can also be used as a shield, giving the Ultra 3 separate tools that he can use to defend himself. Most of these tools are stored in his Ultimate Bracelet which boasts two other important functions: the first being the spare energy it gives Zero. He has 3 uses of an ability that completely restores him to full power if he ever finds himself low on energy. The bracelet also lets him split up into two identical versions of himself giving Zero multiple options for how he can overwhelm his opponent. It's also worth noting that unlike the Senzu Beans, the Ultimate Bracelet is not easily damaged. In the 15 years it has existed, the device has only been damaged one time in battle, so Gohan wouldn't reliably be able to destroy it given its track record of surviving attacks from foes vastly stronger than Zero.

Moving onto abilities, Zero also has the advantage. Gohan’s best abilities are related to his Hybrid-Saiyan physiology, with his insane potential and Zenkai Boosts granting him huge leaps in power after a near death experience as well as a variety of beams/energy attacks such as the Kamehameha, Galactic Donut and Special Beam Cannon. There's also evidence for Ki being able to atomize the target via Trunks vaporizing Frieza, all handy abilities for sure but rather limited. Zero on the other hand has a lot more to offer. He has his traditional beams to match Gohan’s like the Emerium Slash and his Wide Zero Shot (which is at least 500,000 degrees Celsius, with beams matching the Zetton species’ 100 trillion degree flames), but there's so much more thanks to his Ultra Physiology. He can teleport, use telekinesis, has extremely heightened senses, shrink down to the microscopic level, amplify his speed and strength or even use more obscure abilities like sleep manipulation and sealing.

But what’s also important is Zero’s regeneration, which is almost instantaneous should Gohan pull a Moro and puncture Zero’s body and it could be even more busted if Taro and Mebius’ regeneration is anything to go by. We’d be foolish not to mention that Zero’s higher forms also give him a few more powers that add to his overwhelming arsenal. His Mode-Changes, Ultimate and his Beyond forms all possess even more projectiles like the Garnate Buster, Miracle Zero Slugger and the Balkey Chorus, while Shining lets him jump through time to save himself from danger or outright reverse it and then his strongest form, Ultimate Shining has him fight on instinct which could help him throw Gohan off along with his speed amplification. Despite that, Gohan does at least resist some very important abilities of Zero’s, arguably some of his deadliest that would net him the win relatively instantly. Characters as early as Trunks in the Androids Saga are stated to cause atomization with their Ki Blasts, meaning Gohan would resist any attacks that target his atomic make-up such as Zero’s Emerium Slash. Characters in Dragon Ball have also withstood attacks/absorptions of their soul without any lasting permanent impact, meaning Zero likely wouldn’t be able to simply just rip Gohan’s soul out of his body and win right there and then or damage it with his Wide Zero Shot like other Ultra beams have shown the ability to do. The same applies to abilities like transmutation and spatial manipulation, leaving Gohan as resisting pretty much all of Zero’s most dangerous abilities. On the other hand, Zero also resists Gohan's ability to atomize things with his Ki as various Ultras have survived atomization before from Emerium energy and Pagos’ beam, leaving Gohan’s best chance at an instant win option also moot.

So, where does that leave us? They cancel out in most areas so who takes the edge? In the end, Zero would still have an advantage. Gohan’s resistances and tenacity would certainly limit Zero’s options, but there are still a few things that Gohan cannot make up for. Gohan truthfully doesn’t really have any easy answer to Zero’s beams’ extreme heat, amplifying his stats, duplicating himself, or manipulating his size to make it incredibly hard for Gohan to hit him like shrinking down to a microscopic level. For every ability of Zero’s that Gohan resists, there’s usually two or three more that Gohan can’t really do anything about besides adapting on the fly. Even though Gohan resists most of Zero’s deadliest options, Zero simply has an insane versatility advantage and the abilities Gohan doesn't have a reliable answer to will make it a lot more difficult for him to overwhelm Zero. Not to mention, the Ultra’s more helpful tools like his shields and the ability to recharge his energy instantly, meaning this category also goes to Ultraman Zero.

Tertiary Factors

In a fight as close as this, the tertiary factors become even more important in deciding who comes out on top. First up is skill. Despite Gohan not quite matching up to characters like Goku or Piccolo in terms of pure skill, he still is a remarkably talented fighter and is capable of keeping up with these fighters on more than one occasion. His intelligence on the battlefield is also one of the best in Dragon Ball, so much so that he was named Universe 7’s leader by Goku which was clearly a good decision considering his many impressive showings of intelligence in the Tournament of Power like holding off Universe 6’s Super Namekians while Piccolo charged his Special Beam Cannon to one shot them and getting past Obuni's ability to separate his energy from his body. Even from the age of 12, Goku should be comparable to statements like Grandpa Gohan being a master of every single martial art on the planet, to the point of him not having an equal in that field. As the series goes on, Goku’s martial arts mastery just gets more and more absurd to the point it can be hard to list every single important showing of his skill, ranging from him defeating Hit, who has lived for a thousand years and had never failed a single assassination attempt, or keeping up with Beerus, who is at least 75 million years old if not MUCH older. While Gohan definitely is not one to one with his father’s martial arts prowess, the gap can’t be so large as for Gohan to not be considered in a somewhat similar ballpark as his father.

Zero is no slouch to combat either. Everyday since he was banished, he trained with Leo and Astra, who are two of the most skilled warriors in Ultraman and was considered to have unlimited potential as a warrior from a young age, something he has certainly lived up to. Ever since his first battle at the Monster Graveyard, he continues to hone his skills, sparring with Regulos who uses the universe’s most powerful martial art and trouncing Belial who defeated the entire Land of Light all on his own. With that said, most of Zero’s training was entirely off screen and surprisingly, Ultraman doesn't have many explicit skill feats and definitely not as many as Dragon Ball’s. Therefore, we believe that despite Zero’s immense skill and his entire background being dedicated to training with his universe's best fighters, Son Gohan should take it due to his better showings and fighting characters who have much more explicit feats of skill.

Experience on the other hand goes to Zero. We do know that he’s at least over 5,000 years old due to his pupil Ultraman Z being that age with him being seen as a rookie compared to the other Ultras at the time of his show. With that in mind, Zero has centuries of experience over Gohan and has fought a much wider variety of opponents thanks to his constant traveling throughout the multiverse to face several wacky kaiju and aliens. However, Gohan and other Dragon Ball characters have shown that they are more than capable of keeping up with characters who are far older than they are like Hit and Beerus so while Zero does hold an advantage here, it isn't something that's going to turn the tide of the fight, meaning over all we believe Gohan takes tertiary factors.

Endurance

Lastly, we have their stamina and endurance which turned out to be arguably the most important factor in this debate when deciding the winner. The Saiyans and by proxy Gohan’s best showing of stamina was the Tournament of Power’s 48 minute time limit which left the last participants including Frieza, who has higher endurance than the average Dragon Ball character, completely drained of their energy. While there are examples of Saiyans being able to fight for far longer as seen with his training in the room of spirit and time the same cant be said for him while he’s in his stronger forms against opponents around the same level as him. In the most recent chapters of the Dragon Ball Super manga while using his Beast form against Goku, Broly, and then all the Saiyans in an all out spar, we see that all parties were tapped out very quickly after a short session meaning Gohan won't be able to last long while at his peak. It's also worth noting that Gohan hasn't fully mastered his Beast form yet and can only fully tap into it by pushing himself to the emotional limit in short bursts which doesn't help him in this fight.

Onto Zero whose endurance exceeds Gohan's by a fair margin. The young Ultra’s best showing comes from his fight against Belial Atrocious, whose clash lasted from sunny afternoon to daytime while fighting alongside Geed. This idea can be backed up by other examples of endurance such as Zero fighting Leo in heavily restricting armor for a large period of time before going to immediately fight Belial in the Monster Graveyard which nerfs an Ultra’s power. In the same movie, we see Ultraman, Seven and Mebius also fighting Belial's monster army in the Monster Graveyard for an extended period of time, with all of them fighting on limited power after Belial stole the Plasma Spark, their main source of energy yet they’re able to wipe down Belial's forces and endure several powerful attacks from him, Reis powered up Gomora and still be able to help fight Belial in his Belyudra form. Lastly, there’s also the example of Father of Ultra restricting Belial Atrocious for hours, seemingly from the afternoon till daytime where he finally caved in the stalemate, showing that Ultras are capable of lasting for hours on end.

Just off of this alone, Gohan is utterly eclipsed when it comes to stamina, but one might be able to argue that Gohan could stay in the fight long enough via things like Senzu Beans and getting Zenkai Boosts right? Well…Zero can also just replenish his energy, except in a far easier manner via his Ultimate Bracelet. Senzu Beans can be easily snatched or destroyed after Zero sees Gohan use it for the first time meaning it won't be a very reliable source of energy replenishment. As previously mentioned in his arsenals section, the bracelet has existed for 15 years and in the time that the accessory has existed, it’s only been damaged and rendered unusable once, making it extremely unlikely Gohan would be able to easily destroy it and prevent Zero from just getting to full strength again.

Zero’s abilities also certainly don’t help Gohan when it comes to trying to win a war of attrition, as things like duplication and especially regeneration would make it so Gohan would have a pretty difficult time actually putting Zero down permanently outside of his absolute strongest attacks, which then ties into an earlier issue for Gohan. That issue being that Gohan likely shouldn’t scale to the dimensional tiering feats brought up earlier unless he’s in his Beast form, which means if he were to drop out of the form due to stamina troubles…it’s likely Zero can just one-shot him considering the absurd stat gap that would then exist.

These factors make this a really tough call. While Gohan has superior skill and can keep up with someone as experienced as Zero, we feel that there isn't a wide enough gap in skill for Gohan to outright skill stomp Zero in hand to hand combat. This will make it a battle of attrition where the other factors like Zero’s stamina and versatility come into play. With his variety of moves at his disposal from his beams, to size manipulation and factoring in his insane endurance and regeneration, we believe Zero takes endurance over Son Gohan.

Conclusion

“You can’t just quit the fight, you have to face it.“

Advantages:

  • Even Infinite Ends

    • Potentially stronger and more blatant and consistent infinite ends showcased, especially when it comes to immeasurable speed

  • Far more experienced

  • Wider and far more versatile arsenal with both weaponry and abilities like size manipulation, duplication, and extreme heat being things Gohan can't counter, even with only his own set…

  • Regeneration doesn’t rely on a finite power supply

  • Better stamina and resilience (even without taking a time limit into account)

  • Ultra Rizz

  • Is a hero in real life

  • Son of the best Ultra (who mentored his teacher)

  • New movie next year (be sure to watch it!)

Disadvantages:

  • Lower Finite ends

  • Less skilled

  • …despite Gohan being able to resist most of his instant win-cons

  • TAIGA (the human host, not the Ultra)

  • Hasn’t been in an Ultraman Fighting Evolution game (they’re peak)

Believe it or not, we think this fight is closer than most think. Gohan potentially being able to match stats, along with being more skilled will make this an incredibly tough fight for his opponent. However, Zero ultimately has more going for him, thanks to being equal to higher end arguments in his base form, whereas Gohan needs to rely on Beast to match him in. This is a major disadvantage as he already has less endurance to last against Zero, and that's even further affected by the strain on his body in Beast. Gohan resisting most of Zero's abilities is a major edge, but Zero overall still has more versatility to make up for it, and Gohan can't counter Zero being able to regenerate himself, split his body, amplify his stats, fully replenish his energy or change his size. In the end, while Son Gohan was the strongest mortal on Earth, Ultraman Zero has what it takes to secure victory in this battle of the New Generation Heroes. Looks like Gohan was 20,000 years too early to defeat the Son of Seven. The winner is Ultraman Zero.

Final Tally

Gohan (2) - Sifu, TheCardinalKing

Ultraman Zero (9) - Gio, Kuma, Scar, Tony, Landon1195, WWAL, Spirit, KaijuConvoy, 08. Yuix
