“Until you spread your wings, you’ll have no idea how far you can fly.” -Napoleon

Nightwing, the Knight of Blüdhaven.

Ken the Eagle, the Gatchaman of Science Ninja Team.

Through decades of superheroes and vigilantes, the time must come for the successors to take flight, spanning a legacy of crime fighting wing to wing, and what better heroes to do it then these two avian-themed acrobats? Adopted by their father figures, trained up as a peak human martial artist, and with plenty of projectiles to throw, these two would go on to form their own legacy, and their own teams, learning from their mentors while standing on their own two feet. Will Nightwing ruffle the feathers of the Eagle, or will Ken turn the ex-Robin into bird brains? Time to take flight and find out who wins a DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Start…

For Nightwing, very simple stuff. Pre/Post-Flashpoint appearances will all be accounted for. In terms of his other forms in particular such as Robin, Batman, and Agent 37 (ugh), lots of Robin information will be documented for history/experience sake, and his other forms will be mentioned mostly for the sake of going over as much of his character as possible, while still keeping in mind that this blog is heavily focused on Dick Grayson as Nightwing.

For Ken, we’ll be using the four main Gatchaman TV shows; Gatchaman, Gatchaman II, Gatchaman Fighter, and the Gatchaman OVA. We will also be using the more recent Gatchaman comic series, as well as the Battle of the Planets comic series from Top Cow, as it is notoriously closer to the original anime than the American localization of the same name, despite the characters’ names changing (Ken becoming Mark, for example. Think of it like Optimus Prime being called Convoy in Japan). Lastly, Gatchaman Crowds will not be included, as it doesn't actually have much to do with the original Gatchaman at all, and the original characters do not exist there.

Lastly, a special thanks to the many people who pitched in to help the Imgur process for the Gatchaman content, including Saul, Frisk, ThiccGrimes, Yerm, blesseduara, and Kaiser, and Round 1 Fight. We couldn’t have made this without your help. And thank you to Kaiser, Rina, and NormallyNormal for being the number crunchers. Enjoy the blog!

Background

Nightwing

Flip: Tried homaging one of my favorite artists ever, Dustin Nguyen. Loved Robin and Batman’s art in particular.

Born to a family of acrobats, the young Dick Grayson was part of Haly’s Circus until a fateful night changed his life forever. When his parents were murdered in front of him, a crime orchestrated by Gotham’s criminal underworld, he was taken in by Bruce Wayne, who saw in him a mirror of his own tragedy. Under Bruce’s guidance, Dick became the first Robin, Batman’s partner and protégé, learning the intricacies of crime-fighting, detective work, and combat in the unforgiving shadows of Gotham City.

As Robin, Dick was more than a sidekick; he was a symbol of light alongside Batman’s darkness, bringing a hopefulness and joy to their partnership. But as he grew older, tensions arose between them—Dick’s desire for independence clashed with Bruce’s strict methods, and the young hero eventually sought to forge his own path. Leaving behind the identity of Robin, Dick embarked on a journey of self-discovery, one that would ultimately lead him to adopt a new mantle: Nightwing. Inspired by a tale Superman once shared of a Kryptonian hero by the same name, Nightwing represented Dick’s step into the shadows on his own terms, with a symbol and a mission uniquely his.

Nightwing soon made his presence known in Blüdhaven, a city darker and somehow even more corrupt than Gotham. Blüdhaven’s crime was seeped into the very bones of the city, and its villainous underworld was less theatrical than Gotham, but equally sinister. As Nightwing, Dick faced a relentless wave of crime bosses, corrupt police officers, and street gangs, carving out his own place as the city’s protector. No longer in Batman’s shadow, he built a reputation based on compassion, skill, and his willingness to get his hands dirty for the sake of justice.

Over time, Dick’s leadership extended beyond Blüdhaven, as he formed and led the Teen Titans, creating a family among heroes who were often as lost and broken as he had once been. With the Titans, he found a home and a purpose beyond himself, solidifying his place as both a peer and mentor to heroes across the DC Universe. In a world of darkness, he emerged not as a shadow but as a beacon of hope, proving that, even without the Bat, he was still a force to be reckoned with.

Ken the Eagle

Flip: We couldn’t avoid Alex Ross at some point, specially with his Gatchaman comic covers.

In the realm of classic anime heroes, few heroes are as compelling as Ken Washio, better known as Ken the Eagle. Born into a life of high expectations, his passion for aviation and heroism was shaped by his father, Kentaro Washio, a test pilot whose mysterious disappearance left a lasting mark on him. Left without answers, Ken grew up under the mentorship of Dr. Kozaburō Nambu, founder of the International Science Organization, who saw in him the potential to lead. From an early age, Ken was dedicated to training, honing his skills in combat and strategy, preparing for the mantle that he would one day bear as Gatchaman’s fearless leader.

As Ken the Eagle, he’s the team's unbreakable foundation, leading his fellow heroes with a blend of compassion, grit, and razor-sharp instincts. He’s unmatched in combat, his Bird Style agility and powerful aerial maneuvers giving him the edge against Galactor’s forces. But Ken’s greatest strength isn’t just his physical prowess—it’s his unyielding sense of duty, a drive to protect the world’s vulnerable people, and a belief that good can prevail over even the darkest threats. With his iconic wings and eagle-inspired armor, Ken fights not for glory but because he believes in a brighter future for the world.

Ken’s journey is as much personal as it is heroic. When he learns that his father, long presumed dead, is actually the head of the Red Impulse squad, his mission takes on a new, deeply personal weight. The revelation shakes him, challenging his understanding of loyalty and duty, and forces him to balance his own desires for closure with his responsibilities as a leader. Yet, Ken never wavers, embodying resilience and honor in every decision he makes, keeping his focus on his team and the mission at hand.

In battle, the Science Ninja Team operates like a well-tuned machine, with Ken at the helm of the God Phoenix, their supersonic aircraft capable of transforming into a fiery bird for powerful strikes. Each mission brings them face to face with the destructive ambitions of Galactor, but with Ken leading the charge, the team remains undeterred, no matter the odds. For Ken, each fight is a step closer to the peace he dreams of, a world where no child has to face the loss and pain he endured.

Experience & Skill

Nightwing

Nightwing’s career in crime fighting has been long and filled with training from Batman himself. Everything he knows, from his work as a detective to his skill in martial arts, has been passed down onto him by his mentor. When it comes to his training and skill in hand-to-hand combat, he is well equipped, being called only second to the Batman in sheer skill and detective abilities. Batman himself has called him the best and toughest hand-to-hand fighter of all the Robins, and he is stated to be a master of over a half dozen martial arts, including;

His training has expanded far beyond the wing of Batman however, and has trained under the likes of Shrike, Richard Dragon, and even the Blüdhaven Police Academy. It has turned him into a well-rounded tactical fighter, able to identify lethal techniques from opponents, and learning some of his own such as the death touch, or nerve strikes. He even stated that his own hand to hand combat skills and his teams make up for taking on enemies that Aquaman stated can go head to head with Superman, making him more than experienced against metahuman threats. His improvement over the years has been recognized by Lady Shiva, one of the best martial artists on the planet. And how well have these skills carried him to the streets of Blüdhaven? Well, he once helped Richard Dragon and Bronze Tiger beat the Circle of Six, known for their deadly martial arts skills. He’s so impressive that Vigilante also admitted that Nightwing would easily beat him in a fair fight, unchain himself from tricky situations and knows how to do karate chops and takedowns. He also disarmed skilled veterans like Ra's Al Ghul. Many martial artists and vigilantes have battled Nightwing such as Azrael, Roy Harper, Midnighter, and Deathstroke, whom Nightwing has fought many times, to the point where Slade has admitted that Nightwing is one of the best fighters he has ever seen.

In terms of armed combat, this is where Nightwing truly shines in a few ways. His main weapons are his eskrima sticks, so it would only make sense for Nightwing to be a master in the art of Eskrima, a fighting style that uses two baton-like sticks. He is skilled in using similar weapons such as regular bo-staffs or swords. He's taken on master sword fighters like Lady Vic and Azrael, all while making it look easy. When he became an agent of Spyral, he also became an expert in firearms and marksmanship, both lethally and non-lethally.

He's also shown his talent as a detective just like his father, having cracked a 15-year-old case that everyone else had given up on—all he had to go on was an old man's dying words about a "boy with no hair." At one time, Superman showed to trust Dick enough to gather evidence for him to solve a case. In another situation, Dick had quickly realized that his team was having their will to fight drained due to external forces. When it comes to tech, he's right up there with the best, teaming up with Tim Drake to hack into Prisco's and NY’s police databases, he designed Arsenal's arrow that is specifically designed to fry Vault's neural circuits and got past Barbara's security system.  He's also a master of disguise, sneaking into Penguin’s organization and even pulling off disguises like Batman and Joker. He's so sharp that he once spotted an intruder just because there were different light reflections in the house and is an expert on facial reading.  He's also able to make antidotes on the spot, like when two girls were poisoned and he had to make a cure. One extension of his detective skills is the Memory Palace Technique, which he learned from Batman. This allowed him to remember Raptor and deduce that Raptor was to blame for his own problems and not Bruce Wayne.

He's not just about brains, though, and Nightwing is in peak physical performance, making him one of the best of the best when it comes to pain tolerance, stamina, and fighting without tiring. According to the Flash, is impervious to rain, wind, cold, thirst, hunger and needing to use the restroom because he was trained by Batman. He can stay up for days without sleep, hold his breath for a really long time (and he claims to be able to hold it for four minutes), and train for several hours without fatigue. This type of conditioning has allowed him to resist drugs and endure hits from far stronger foes than him such as Blockbuster.

And in situations where being a hero is about saving people, he has taken it upon himself to learn how to perform field surgery under the tutelage of Alfred Pennyworth. Even in the weirdest situations—like escaping a cave full of man-eating rats while covered in honey—Nightwing keeps his cool and shows just how tough he is. And despite all the chaos in his life, he still recognizes the value of family, openly calling to Bruce that he is the best dad he could have had. Whether he's fighting an army of apes or using clever decoys in battle, Nightwing proves time and again that he's not just another vigilante, which is what made him a candidate for Green Lantern Abin Sur’s ring. He's a seasoned hero who combines brains, brawn, and heart to protect Blüdhaven, and worthy to be Batman's son and prime successor.

Ken the Eagle

Ever since Ken was young, he was full of traits that Dr. Nambu saw fit to make him the team leader of Gatchaman, and has been training in combat since age 12, being capable of beating underwater divers with harpoon guns in quick succession. Once he gained his cerebonic implants, Ken and his team began training in numerous forms of offensive and defensive combat techniques, both armed and unarmed, such as Aikido, Taekwondo, Kung-Fu, Ju-Jitsu, Krav-Maga, Ninjitsu, and various wrestling techniques. His mastery of these fighting and stealth techniques have enhanced Ken to the point where he sees the world moving in slow-motion in his most intense training exercises, which include fighting giant robots bare-handed in danger rooms. This training has turned him into the menace of the Galactors, turning their troops into smallfry, being able to plow through hordes of them or Dorian soldiers, and is capable of beating their best generals such as Red Impulse, and even taking down their forces in human form

Being the team leader has heightened Ken’s other skills in teamwork, and being a tactician, employing any strategy necessary to defeat or deceive the Galactors, like when he used a decoy to trick the Rider Commandos before attacking them with a method similar to Substitution Jutsu. On the defense, he’s a quick thinker, able to figure out the plots of the Galactor before Dr. Nambu himself says Ken has good instincts. One time, he could tell a nuclear bomb had been planted on the ocean floor just by analyzing the radioactivity at the time. And Ken is certainly a team player, and his team together have found ways to bring down the forces of the Galactor through their planning and precision, such as taking down the Iron Beast, despite it being full of highly deadly nerve gas, and they took it out without making it explode. He once made a plan to pretend to turn down a request for help from inside Galactor controlled territory, to ensure their forces aren’t doubled when they go and try to save them.

And when it comes to his piloting skills, there’s few that can match the Gatchaman. Ken was a part of Pilot school when he was younger, even in his human form he has shown immense skill in piloting and aviation no matter how bad the situation is, barrel rolling or maneuvering around giant mummy robots and missile after tank with ease. Ken is always the pilot of choice for testing the International Science Organization’s new aircrafts. He was able to maneuver his G-1 around the Magma Giant to lure it into the sea to turn and crumble into obsidian. His skill in piloting also reflects in his mechanical aptitude, being able to hotwire the Gatchaspartan in an attempt to power it up. His vehicular mastery has also helped his fighting skills, being able to beat up motorcycle goons, even while standing up on Jun’s bike. He is also skilled in escape artistry, like when he used lockpicks and precision to unchain himself from falling.

Equipment

Nightwing

Robin Suit

The classic outfit that defined the title of the Boy Wonder. The black domino mask hides his identity, the “R” emblem and the cape allows for gliding, with his many tools like a grappling hook strapped to his utility belt, but on occasion has wielded more direct weapons such as a collapsible shield with an “R” on it.

Batman Suit

When Batman died during the events of Final Crisis to stop Darkseid, he knew that the legend of the Batman could never die. Working with Alfred, he made his own Bat-Bunker hideout, and also a new, sleek Batman suit. This suit came with two gauntlets and with more separate kevlar plates, implying the suit was somewhat modeled after his original Nightwing costume, only with a cape and cowl to go with. Many of the features of a Batman suit carried over to Dick’s suit, such as the cowl giving him infrared vision. But no Batsuit is complete without the yellow utility belt, which is composed of solid steel. Many of its utilities are for split second emergencies, like ten-cylinder cartridges, each of which contains various tools integral to Batman's war on crime, and vertically clip onto the outside of the belt. The buckle itself contains a miniature camera and two-way radio. A secondary compartment behind the length of the belt houses Batman's supply of collapsible batarangs. Other items include:

Classic Suit

Unfortunately, Dick Grayson outgrew the mantle of Robin, and the time came for Dick Grayson to carve his own path and form his own legacy. Inspired by his circus roots and the former acrobat Deadman, he made a tight-skin suit with a mask to hide his identity as a vigilante. This golden-striped suit allowed him to glide and keep up with Tim Drake.

Modern Suit

The current and up to date suit of Nightwing. The triple-weave material is superior to kevlar due to its sturdy, flexible, and even bulletproof, design, he still feels staggered, though it isn’t as armored or protected as Batman's suit, but this is to suit his crime fighting style, which is a lot more acrobatic and light on the feet. The suit has many features, such as a stylized blue winged symbol to tank gunfire, swim in cold, Nightwing’s legs are damaged after being shot in War Games, his suit helps him climb around in ‘Stealth Mode’. His suit has undergone many upgrades from the likes of Mister Terrific, and is now also fireproof, in order to provide more utility and his suit now houses various compartments that let him hide various equipment such as;

Domino Mask

The mask conceals the identity of Dick Grayson, but it also comes with many features in order to aid him in combat and detective work. His mask has contacts designed by Cyborg that amplify the light coming through them, enhancing his vision to the point where he doesn’t need a flashlight, and an earlier version could already has night vision that could magnify brightness 5000x over natural light. Other features include, night vision, built-in radio transmitter, infrared settings (although it cant see invisible people), heat signature tracking, item scanning, self-destruct option, and a communication link that uses a relay from his apartment’s telephone. His mask also protects him from Pepper Spray.

Gauntlets

Another part of Nightwing’s arsenal comes in the form of his gauntlets, which can be electrified to hurt an opponent. They also house many of his important tools and technology such as;

Escrima Sticks

They work as you’d expect, but can also be electrically charged, or be used as a grappling hook. They can also shine bright enough to blind opponents.

Electric Whips

Whips that are covered with electricity and can shock opponents. Dick has used them to shock multiple enemies at once.

Wingdings

Nightwing’s main ranged weapons, often described as modified batarangs to fit his own bird motif, sometimes being called a birdarang. It can be used to disarm a gunman or cut into an enemy such as Catwoman’s leg as she tried to flee, and it's even strong enough to chop off the head of a Gorgon. Variants include the electrorang, an electric birdarang that carries up to 6,000 volts of electricity, and the De-Cel Cable, a birdarang with a special kind of rope that absorbs the force of someone falling.

Grappling Hook

A standard grappling hook with an electric charge on it. Lets Nightwing scale buildings far faster and easier.

Guns

Briefly used it while training Argent, but he has proper training and is very good at it. He even passed the Blüdhaven police evaluation and became a cop at one point.

Foam Cannon

Wait a second, isn’t this for washing cars? Why does he have it? Is this even useful for combat? Does Dick know that this isn't how he's supposed to clean crime out of Blüdhaven?

Handheld Explosives

Miniature explosives that can fit in the palm of Nightwing’s hand, and has enough to throw out at once, strong enough to destroy an armored car.

Sticky Explosives

Can launch explosives that stick to solid surfaces, strong enough to break down an entire stone wall. Similar explosives can also cause a cave entrance to collapse

Night Vision Goggles

Used to see better in the dark with thermal scanning technology that captures infrared light, going full Sam Fisher mode.

Respirator

Allows him to breathe underwater even in extreme cold. For some reason, Dick kept them with a Bat-shaped design.

Binoculars

Let's Nightwing see far, and come with technology that scans people for information, and if they are armed.

Bolas

Ever since his days as Robin, the bolas have been a primary method of capturing foes and restraining them, or preventing them from using their weapons.

Net Projectile

Works as shown above, nothing more to add. Useful for capturing enemies as seen in the scan.

EMP

A detonated electromagnetic pulse that causes a transient electromagnetic disturbance, and was used to shut down a group of weaker O.M.A.C.s, and its charge was potent enough to shut down the power in the entire building for 90 seconds.

Thermo Charge

Has a thermo charge that disrupts a Superman robot's sensory functions and blows six of its power cells.

Tracker

Can plant a small tracker on someone's back, always having their location by remote control. You will never escape from Dick.

Speaker Equipment

Has sound devices that can hear things happening at close distance. Extremely useful for investigations.

150K Volt Charge

Dick’s costume is wired to deliver a 150k volt, by touching someone else. It is a one-time charge and can put down a normal human. It was able to briefly stun the assassin Saiko.

Hypnos Device

An equipment used during the time Dick was Agent 37 while working for some ominous people. It can affect people's perception and senses, and also forces hypnosis, altho it's implied it needs to touch the target. By the end of the story, he returns to be Nightwing and it is never said or stated he lost or took it off the device. At the same time he never used it again, so saying Nightwing would use it in character feels iffy.

Miscellaneous Gear

Ken the Eagle

G-1 Costume

The G-Force outfits worn by the Science Ninja Team are the specialty of the International Science Organization. While looking like cheap spandex at first, the costumes are layered with many features and technological functions. The clothing can react to the special signals (specifically broadcasting a 3.6 Gigahertz Frequency) on Ken’s communicator in order to transform into Gatchaman, and its material can resist all manner of bullets, flames, knives, daggers, energy bolts, arrows, or spears

Similarly, his cape’s wings can be used to slit throats, are element-proof, and can even allow him to glide like, well, an Eagle. Ken can use the cape to jump into the air and generate powerful gusts of winds. Ken had to undergo a number of secret training sessions to learn the G-Suit’s functions, as well as calibrate it to his body to avoid dangerous overcompensation. It is said that a human subject would need super strength as well as the ability to instantly judge how best to adjust the G-Suit’s power, Ken volunteering to be a test subject for the ISO’s experiments.

The helmet is sound-proof that resists Sonic Mecha’s music so loud it crumbles buildings and drives people insane, and has a built in inhibiting signal that blocks out the knock-out signal of Ken’s boomerang. Its ability to collect data is attributed to its HUD-style display graphics, allowing it to monitor Ken’s condition like cerebonic power levels or body temperature. The visors allow Ken to view things in infrared, heat detection, or x-ray, and can magnify or zoom in on certain viewing fields in order to detect his teammates. It has a loudspeaker function to address large groups of people, and an antenna that connects to Center Neptune during their missions. In the event of Ken or his comrades fearing they’ll be discovered, they can turn the helmet off into “passive mode”, which can still passively absorb data that will be downloaded onto the God Phoenix. Even better, the glass covering his face is one-way; IE, he can see out just fine, but nobody can see his real face and discern his true identity.

Finally, the boots can store small contents in their fake heels, and are lined with special gripping properties that allow Ken to adjust to certain terrains and have better traction. To scale surfaces, the boots are lined with powerful electro-magnets that simply let them walk up walls in order to make great escapes or scout out surveillance technology in stealthier missions. And just for certain purposes, they also contain explosives that can- ...actually let’s save that for later.

Boomerang

The sonic boomerang is Ken’s main weapon. It is a collapsible and throwable boomerang that returns to Ken, but has a variety of features during its ‘Bird Run’. It can render someone unconscious mid-throw via emitting a signal, and its wings are razor sharp and can act like a knife. Additionally, a homing device was added so that the boomerang automatically returns to Ken’s hand no matter what, even after being thrown far to the sky. Other ways Ken can use it is disarming foes of their weapons, and it is strong enough to decapitate Micro robots. The Bird Run can be activated on its own to fly and attack enemies and return to Ken without him throwing it.

Bird Saucer

Later on in the series, Ken used this instead of the Boomerang against Galactor’s forces in Gatchaman II. The Bird Saucer is a collapsible blade that Ken throws like the former deadly boomerang, able to slash through any foe in his way when paired with his excellent aim. It can even split into three smaller projectiles for impacting multiple targets at once.

Explosive Ninja Stars

In his small pocket, Ken has small explosive Ninja Stars he can use. The explosives are quite powerful, being able to violently fragment metal with ease.

Wrist Communicator

Each team member wears a special bracelet on their left forearm. It can be used to communicate with the team members via an auditory signal that goes off, and also allows Ken to transform into Gatchaman, along with his plane into the G-1. It can also detect electromagnetic waves, energy and IR (infrared).

Shock Gun

A multi-purpose blaster which is equipped with a variety of ammunition for specific tasks, such as a grenade launcher for demolition, a stun blast for infiltration missions, or acid to melt through the train car. Being powerful enough to blow up large robots, it’s certainly a welcome addition to Ken’s arsenal.

Gatchaman Fencer

Ken wields the Gatchaman Fencer, which is fueled by the same power as the G-1, and can be used as a blade or even thrown as a weapon. It can also be powered up by the Gatchaspartan’s delta energy with a power described by Gramps as being the equivalent to 200,000 kilowatts of Electricity and can cut through steel in just one stroke, and could cut a wall composed of neophryte alloy once amped beyond its limits in a rage. The Gatchaman Fencer was able to pierce Leonder when God Eagle wasn’t able to make a scratch in it. It can also disintegrate normal humans when fully powered, something Ken himself has stated

Aquatic Diving Suits

Ken has access to diving suits and scuba gear for more stealth-based underwater missions for a splashy surprise.

Mini Locators

ID tags that Joe put on a missles to track them, and if it wasn't obvious, one of these belongs to Ken.

Direction Detector

Ken has a device called the direction detector, which can track the movement of people, including invisible objects.

Knockout Gas

Even in civilian attire, Ken carries knockout gas with him as a non-lethal method. Extremely useful.

Gas Mask

Ken has access to a gas mask that protects him from any gas based attacks. He's prepared to face Batman in the shitty Suicide Squad game.

Brain Device

Triggers a mechanism in the brain of a dog, Taro, to resurrect him within an hour (though it’s likely not to be used, as a dog died in the episode, but also what the fuck).

Fish Suit

Feesh.

Miscellaneous Gear

Vehicles

Nightwing

Wingcycle

A high tech motorcycle Dick uses. Originally it was a white, gold, and blue motorcycle with a sidecar for a second passenger. It was eventually upgraded to a black and blue version with the Nightwing symbol on the front. It was modified by Dick himself using Batmobile specs for weapons and armor.

Car

It has 640 Horses, can go from zero to sixty in 5 seconds, going consistently at 100 mph after those seconds. It also has a nomex windshield and ceramic body coating are bulletproof (up to 50 caliber) and impact absorber. It seems that it can also launch spiked bolas.

Boat

Seems like a normal ass boat if you ask me. It’s cool though, girls must love checking on Jim and Juan while sailing.

Helicopter (Debatable)

During his time as an agent of Spyral, Dick used a helicopter as his primary method of transportation to suit his more espionage missions. It can go invisible and has some firepower. Just like the Hypnos device, it's also something he only used as Agent 37, but never stated to have lost access to it, so we're listing it as debatable to give it to Dick as well.

Wings

This isn't a glider like Batman’s cape, but an actual way to let Nightwing fly into the air. He can even call it to his location.

Helipack

A propeller device that allows Nightwing to fly, with the drawback of looking extremely goofy compared to the wings.

Jetpack

A fairly standard jetpack that allows Dick to fly and seemingly keep up with Starfire and Beast Boy’s cruising speed.

Ken the Eagle

Standard Vehicles

Test Plane

When Ken is a civilian, you’ll mostly find him testing planes for the International Science Organization.

G-1

Also named the Summit Jet, this was Ken’s main vehicle for a large majority of his time as Gatchaman’s leader. It is used primarily for surveillance and recon missions, and it has a few weapons such as twin laser guns, along with other features like using infrared rays to detect seismic activities, but Ken’s piloting skills make it far more maneuverable than the average plane. When Ken is in his normal human form however, the plane is disguised as a standard Cessna-style prop plane that transforms when Ken himself also transforms.

Eagle Sharp

A fighter jet Ken used as his vehicle in Gatchaman II, which is armed with laser cannons and twin missile launchers, able to fly fast enough to dodge missiles. Its brilliant speed makes it perfect for stealthy flights inside enemy territory.

Gatcha One

G-1 is described as being similar to the Eagle Sharp, one of Ken’s previous ships, which was also mentioned previously. It even has similar weaponry (lasers and twin missile launchers) and is used during the Hyper Shot attack maneuver, often combining from the front of the Gatchaspartan.

Jetski

A jet ski which was used to travel underwater. Works exactly like a sea scooter would work on water.

Snowmobile

A regular snowmobile, which has a G-1 motif and a sidecar that Dr. Miwa used. It's not gonna be so useful outside of snowy terrain.

Bird Roller

A pair of rollerskates. Can be used to perform stunts with a partner. Nailed it better than the tin man.

Non-Standard Vehicles

God Phoenix

The God Phoenix is the command vessel of the Science Ninja Team. In its standard mode, it is far less powerful, unable to use its weapons and is only kept in the air via massive twin engines. When all of the G-Force vehicles and team members are on deck however, everything starts to become significantly stronger due to the vessel running on the combined wills of the team members. It now has access to all of its weapons on-board, from an EMP Pulse Blast to sleeping gas, and has many TBS/TBX nuclear missiles. Even when the team members are not on-board, it can be remote controlled via an AI system. It has a submarine mode with the Poseidon System propelling it and can also fly in space. Another feature is a large dish on its retracted nose, as Jun gets a reading which is the Demon Five’s message via Morse code through drumsticks. The dish is an audio sensor that can be deployed and pick up any sounds there are. Other features include;

New God Phoenix

A vessel that acted as the Science Ninja Team’s mobile base in Gatchaman II, replacing the original God Phoenix which it surpasses in many aspects such as being able to fly at Mach 8.5 and a stronger hull, having ignored Galactor missile fire and endured being nearly melted after crashing into the river. It is also capable of traveling in space, moving underwater, picking up, locating and tracking specific electric waves, and is armed with vulcan guns and launchers for both normal & Bird Missiles, which are powerful enough to obliterate a space base.

Much like its predecessor, the New God Phoenix also uses Science Ninja Technique: Firebird and Shadow Separation, capable of creating an ice barrier by combining its own energy with that of extra-dimensional and destroying the energy-absorbing Black Pyramid base by overloading it (can do the same with latter technique). It is also so hot that a giant plane base was destroyed by being near it.

Gatchaspartan

A high-speed aircraft that replaced the New God Phoenix after it was destroyed in Gatchaman Fighter. Compared to its predecessors, which were vehicles independent of the main mechs, the Gatchaspartan is a fusion of the team’s vehicles and must have all of the team members in order to form the ship. It is capable of traversing deep underwater, piloting solo, magnifying its screen inside and increasing its temperature without Hyper Shot.

Abilities

Nightwing

Acrobatics/Agility

Nightwing is considered to be the world’s greatest acrobat, and has the impressive feat of being the only man alive capable of performing quadruple jumps, and even Batman admitted that Dick as a child would have taught him a thing or two about agility. He can easily maneuver up and down buildings, fight on moving vehicles such as trains, and can jump off walls. Energy blasts? He just flips right over them. He could be carrying a hefty crook and can still do a solid flip. If he needs places to be, his acrobatics will get him there, like when he cleared through a Chicago city block in roughly three panels. Many of his most notable feats of agility include;

Stealth

Nightwing is capable of going undetected with his movement, a skill he uses to get the drop on an unsuspecting opponent or make getaways that are light on his feet. He utilizes his surroundings such as an alleyway to get the drop on numerous people. He can sneak up on other experienced vigilantes such as Batgirl or Huntress and even more impressively on speedsters like Jesse Quick, even disappearing from her. On the contrary, he can sneak away from the likes of the Riddler and was able to go undetected in the Batcave from Batgirl, Red Robin, and Red Hood, though Batman noticed him. He already used it for pickpocketing as well. One of his more impressive feats is breaking into the United Nations building via stealth, despite Hannibal Martin saying that even a whisper would have trouble getting into the building without tripping alarms. He can also tell when someone is trying to sneak up on him, like Roy and Garth. He was even able to pull “a Batman” on Batman himself.

Marksmanship

His escrima sticks serve more purposes than bo-staff fights, and can be thrown as projectiles that can ricochet off solid objects and hit opponents, or come back to his hand. He can throw his baton so hard, it can ricochet on Arsenal and Grace’s heads, before coming back to his hand, or be used to disarm people of their weapons, like when he knocked Jason’s guns out of his hands with his sticks, and was even able to intercept a skilled enough foe like Midnighter with his sticks. He’s also very precise with his wingdings, being able to hit one of Roy’s arrows mid-air with nun-chucks and snipe Two-Face’s precious coin mid-flip, and break a satchel strap on an escaping opponent. As Robin, he was able to hit multiple people in the head with billiard balls.

Body Reading

Nightwing’s skills have given him a tactical ability that allows him to “read” his opponents, which means he can identify weaknesses or weak links, and take notice of traits or movements of the opponent to analyze and predict what moves they could do next.

Being Hot

Many fans refer to Nightwing as DC’s sexiest man alive, and it's often wondered why that is the case. Ever since the days of the collar, he’s been in many relationships, primarily Starfire and Batgirl, and it's easy to see why. In 2013, Nightwing placed 5th on IGN's Top 25 Heroes of DC Comics and Grayson as Nightwing was ranked the #1 Sexiest Male Character in Comics by ComicsAlliance in 2013. But the source material also supports this;

Resistances

Electricity: Nightwing’s suit has great electric insulation, withstanding at least 50K Volts like nothing

Sneak Attacks: Dick says he's hard to sneak up on, and he has detected people sneaking up on him before

Mind Control: Resisted truth-serum drugs, which was likely sodium thiopental. Resisted the temptations of Paragon when he was a Spyral agent. Resisted Groom’s mind control.

Telepathy: Was able to withstand and reverse Zane’s telepathic assault. Can break out of a mental prison.

Hallucinations: Broke free from Scarecrow’s hallucination

Fire/Heat: His suit is flame resistant

Hypnosis: Dick is unaffected by the villain Spook's hypnosis

Radiation: Was able to travel through Blüdhaven despite a large amount of Radiation

Toxin Manipulation: Dick shows some resistance to Scarecrow’ fear gas, and says Alfred inoculated him against every known variation of it

Ken the Eagle

Cerebonic Implants

Each team member has been enhanced with cerebonic implants, a marvel of technology that enhances the teams overall physical performance. It makes them healthier, have far greater stamina, endurance, mental awareness, and senses. This allows Ken to go weeks on end without sleep or eating before he starts feeling the need to do either. Over time, Ken mastered the ability to manually switch this power on and off, kicking in when the team transforms into their costumes and fizzling out when they are in their human forms.

Bird Flight

The name of Ken’s acrobatic maneuvers, Ken’s suit allows for incredible agile abilities, allowing him to do multiple consecutive flips mid-air, jump from great heights off his feet, climb walls, and glide to his heart's content. He’s even skilled enough to engage in mid-air combat with Egobossler, jumping from the ground multiple times.

Stealth

Ken honed his stealth abilities in order to get the drop on the Galactors at any point, or escape them without a trace. Ken and Jun were able to sneak into a village Egobossler had taken over with relative ease, and can hide under a moving train, or hide himself in the snow. He can also sense a person sneaking up on them and react accordingly.

Invisibility

As an extension of their stealth and ninja power, Ken and his teammates have the ability to mask their presence by turning invisible to the naked eye.

Science Ninja Technique: Bird Flash

A ninja technique which Ken can use to release a blinding light around himself, allowing him to disorient enemies.

Science Ninja Technique: Shadow Clone

An old ninja trick variation where Ken can move so fast that he would create illusionary copies of himself. In some versions, this is Ken projecting a hologram, whereas in other versions, Ken’s shadow clones are capable of fighting alongside him.

Science Ninja Technique: Substitution

An old ninja trick which allows Ken to substitute himself with a wooden log dressed in his G-Suit’s helmet and cape, able to use it to trick enemies and attack them from behind.

Science Ninja Technique: Dancing Flames

A one-man technique where Ken can spin himself so fast he creates a large flaming tornado, allowing him to burn groups of enemies around his environment.

Gatchaman Killer Technique: Lightning Slash

A technique where Ken uses his Gatchaman Fencer to cut the enemy down in a lightning-shaped pattern, before energy surges up from the bottom and their halves split open.

Resistances

Electricity: Endured electrocution for an extended time.

Fire/Heat: Survived being blasted with fire and regularly endures the intense pressure and temperature from using Science Ninja Technique: Firebird, which reaches up to 3000 degrees Celsius.

Cold: Ken, along with the other members of the team, could follow Joe up a 8,000 meters tall mountain with such cold temperature that they initially sent the temperature resistant Joe to climb. All of them were also basically fine in -90 degree celsius temperature inside the NGP, and are largely unbothered by wandering in the North Pole’s temperatures.

Poison: Ken drank a poisoned coffee and then got up a minute later, completely fine.

Nerve Gas: Ken seems unphased by nerve gas, and doesn’t seem to be bothered by it later in the episode, even after he gets an extra dosage later, implied to be capable of running through sleeping gas.

Radiation: While suffering from radiation sickness thanks to overusing it, Ken’s body can withstand the Hyper Shot and has shown to be capable of beating up one of Galactor’s bulletproof mutants.

Mind Manipulation: The Science Ninja Team briefly endures being blasted by Thundersaurus’ waves long enough to fly behind it. With Jinpei, briefly resisted a laser that made people instantly go insane.

Scaling

Nightwing

Batman

Nightwing is Batman’s first and finest apprentice, his first son, and is seen as equal by Bruce himself. Selina Kyle, our favorite cat lady that knows Batman far too well, also states Nightwing is more fluid and slightly faster than Bruce, who admits himself that Dick is difficult to tag in combat. They fought together for so long, and while Batman definitely has an edge in some aspects, he even won against his father once in a sparring match. They are by all means comparable.

The Bat Family

Nightwing has been called the best fighter of the Bat Family, thus he should upscale a majority of its members, and should be comparable enough to stronger members such as Cassandra Cain.

Deathstroke

Nightwing fought Slade and held his own against him several times, including in his original run. Feels fair to say they should relatively scale to each other.

Blockbuster

FYI, this is Roland Desmond, not Mark Desmond

Being the first main villain from the 96 run and with both having physically fought against each other, the scaling is very clear cut. While Nightwing himself isn’t physically stronger, he still manages to hurt him consistently, and can tank his toughest hits, so they need to be comparable in strength.

Other Nightwing/Batman Rogues

Blüdhaven and Gotham are no strangers to dangers that lurk in the alleys and control from the underground. From his earliest days of Robin, Nightwing has come blow for blow with many of the two cities’ most notorious criminals, some human, some not.

Ted Kord, Black Canary and Other Street Tiers

Nightwing is one of the best there is when it comes to fighting, and has crossed paths with many other vigilantes such as Arsenal, Catwoman, or Azrael, and thus should be comparable to a majority of the feats performed by many of the peak humans roaming the streets.

Ken the Eagle

Science Ninja Team

As the leader of the Science Ninja Team members, Ken should certainly be comparable to his team members, as they frequently keep up with each other and are very coordinated when it comes to facing the might of the Galactors. After Joe has been turned into a cyborg, Ken was able to take his attacks, sending him flying and restraining him while the former was bloodlusted.

The Galactors

The conquerors of a thousand worlds, and the main enemies of the Science Ninja Team, having technology far greater than that of the International Science Organization. Their army has experienced the might of Ken and his comrades firsthand, and not even their greatest weapons or mechs have been able to bring down the ever-growing might of Ken’s mission of a world where peace reigns.

Science Ninja Team Vehicles

The entire Science Ninja Team survived the explosion of the New God Phoenix, which is more durable and has a far superior energy output and weapon loadout than the original God Phoenix. Ken should also scale directly to the energy output of the Gatchaspartan, as the Hyper Shot technique puts the energy output of the ship at its limit, and channels Delta Energy directly through the G-1 mecha to Ken himself, turning him into a battering ram. As Ken can withstand this energy being channeled through his body and the force being applied to the target, he can scale to the maximum power output of the Gatchaspartan, and therefore to previous ship models. Since Ken’s G-1 mecha can also use the Hyper Shot and is part of the Gatchaspartan, it obviously also scales to other vehicle feats. For more clarification on vehicle scaling, read the Before The Verdict section.

Weaknesses

Nightwing

Above all else, Nightwing is still human. A peak human in top physical condition, yes, but still vulnerable to the many weaknesses a human can have, be it worn down physically or tiring out, though this seldom happens across the streets of Blüdhaven. Perhaps under the surface, Nightwing’s bigger weakness is his inability to let go of what once was, often seeing it as a shadow of a Bat he was stuck in. This leads him to do anything he can to not be like his former mentor, even if it means ignoring his own well-being for the sake of continuing missions or proving a point. Nightwing has also been driven to the edge of his sanity in extreme circumstances, which lead to a plethora of mistakes, with him allowing Blockbuster to be killed by Tarantula and whatever was the shithole that came after in the trainwreck that is the Devin Grayson run. Jesus Christ, fuck Devin Grayson.

Ken the Eagle

Sometimes, Ken can be a bit hotheaded and often has to be dragged away from fights he can’t win. His Birdstyle can also be reverted to a normal self if hit with a specific wave frequency or his wrist communicator is removed. While the cerebonic implants provide peak performance capabilities, they also aren’t without their drawbacks. Activation of the implants too often could result in numerous drawbacks ranging from strain on the muscles, heart, and nervous system, leading to an overproduction of natural chemicals within the body that will eventually build up and cause health problems if not dealt with. Furthermore, Ken is only able to use his abilities in his Gatchaman form, so if for some reason he was to be turned back to human, he would be extremely vulnerable

Before The Verdicts

Where Are Ted Kord's Herald-Level Feats?

As it was said before, Nightwing has fought the Madmen, who are primarily enemies of Ted Kord. The Prime Earth version of these characters is drastically different though, but since Ted says they are powerful and should be taken seriously in Rebirth as well, it’s reasonable to at least argue that Dick, Tim and Damian would scale to Ted. The latter is somewhat of an under researched character in this sphere, and a name not often talked about when it comes to discussing DC stats. When his name pops, some debaters attribute Ted feats that are either taken completely out of context, outliers or simple misconceptions. We decided to tackle these more absurd feats here and discuss some of these arguments:

Claim 1: Ted scales to other multiversal members of the League

Most of the evidence for this is simply not the most solid. For example, there is a scan people argue that Ted Kord tanked a blast from OMAC… even though it clearly knocked him to the ground. The most simple one to tackle: Ted is often seen working with Booster Gold, which must mean that he can keep up with his buddy ol’ pal, right? Not really. Just because they are partners doesn’t mean they’d scale to each other, plenty of characters that are way different in power team up all the time. Batman and Superman, Green Lantern and Green Arrow, Hawkman and the Atom, you name it.

Claim 2: Ted scales to the full extent of the Canary Cry

This one is the most absurd since the Canary Cry is all over the place in inconsistency. It has already taken out heralds. But in 2001, we had Birds of Prey Vol.1 #35. In the scenario where Dinah attacks Ted and Barbara while bloodlusted, it is illogical to claim that she was using her powers at multiversal-levels. The fact that her Canary Cry couldn't fully lift Barbara off the ground indicates that her powers were not at their current maximum potential. Barbara herself later remarks that both she and Ted could have been killed during the attack, suggesting that Dinah's aggression was equally potent towards both. If you would seriously believe Ted Kord is a herald due to surviving the Canary Cry, you necessarily need to also buy Barbara Gordon being a herald. Moreover, a second argument pushing Ted higher is saying he survived not an multiversal level attack, but at least a mountain level one, since the Canary Cry has already reached 300db in the comics. There is a problem: the argument is inconsistent with the timeline, as the decibel feat is credited to a comic published in 2009, eight years after the incident with Ted. Thus, the idea that it was always at least mountain level doesn't hold. This feat from the Green Arrow/Black Canary run is also a bit stupid, because 300db would have made the hospital explode, instead of breaking a few glasses. In case you didn’t know, the launch of a rocket creates an immense shockwave, and the loudest are around 200 dB, but even then, in this later instance, we see some damage to the background. In contrast, it doesn't make any sense for her to be using the full capabilities of a 300mb Canary Cry on Ted since it did no damage to any structure in the former situation. There are two possibilities: either the power of the Canary Cry was weaker than mountain level before it hit Ted, or it has been consistently at herald-level, suggesting unexplained fluctuations in her power. But like we said, the fact that the wall Ted was thrown against didn't even shatter further undermines the argument that this was an attack of mountain-level or multiversal magnitude, so even if you go with the second possibility, it must have fluctuated in power for writing purposes and saved Ted and Barbara's asses. Well, unless you’re extremely cool and based enough to argue Barbara is multiversal on her own, without any gadgets and special armor, and whoever scales to her as well. Checkmate, Gwen.

Claim 3: Ted scales to Scarab users

While Ted did survive a hit from the first Blue Beetle (Dan Garrett) and even dazed him with an iron pipe, it was only for a moment. What about Jaime tho, didn’t he fight against the Madman as well in Blue Beetle Vol.10 #1? He did, but not only it’s explicitly said that Ted is not as powerful as Jaime or Dan, the Madmen got one-shotted by Jaime the moment he got serious, and we don't see them even hurting anyone besides Ted in the entire chapter.

Reality: Average Street Tier

Why is it not surprising that a character conceived by Steve Ditko and Charles Nicholas, the former being one of the co-creators of Spider-Man, exhibits similar levels of extraordinary, outlier characteristics as Ditko's original creation? So yeah, Ted Kord is a normal street tier like we see him most times, and not a herald or even a middle ground for that matter. It happens to the best of us.

Is Karate Kid a Herald™?

The Karate Kid is by far one of the most notorious DC characters to handle in battleboarding. His abilities are beyond human despite oddly being classified as merely a peak human, and the main question on most people’s mind is more than likely; is Karate Kid on the same level as Kryptonians or speedsters? Is he truly powerful enough to hang with the big leagues? Let’s break down the milk before the meat; the Karate Kid’s powers.

The Karate Kid’s combat and techniques primarily stem from his canonical superpower known as “Super-Karate”. This ability is all about precision and finding weak points in order to defeat an enemy, as even the slightest inconvenience or any off-balance will completely nullify the powers’ effectiveness. These feats are often what allow him to perform incredible feats such as destroying planet-busting chains by targeting their weak points, or when he sliced the arm off of a monster that was causing Supergirl to bleed. Narratively, this is treated as a legitimate superpower; precision that can ignore the durability of characters far far stronger than him. Same goes for the many extensions of this technique, such as his holds like the Klenarian Muscle Lock, which briefly restrained Superboy, or when he knocked out Ultra Boy with a pressure point. All of these feats are only able to be done by sheer, utmost precision, and because they are all feats only under his Super-Karate, which narratively would imply that his speed is on par with someone like Mon-El, and even if you argued this was the case, it would be pretty obvious why Nightwing wouldn’t scale to such a thing.

Think of it like Iron Fist’s Iron Fist Punch attack: At full power, it can harm enemies with 100 megatons worth of power or more, but due to it being a special power/technique, it does not mean that his base strength is the same. And Karate Kid is the same way, due to being a peak human his strength feats on average are more in line with the definition of a ‘street tier’, like tearing apart metal restraints, sending cars flying with a kick, or withstanding explosions. As outlined in the scaling section, Karate Kid caused a fissure that yields to 5 kilotons. A relatively small scale feat, and something that isn’t exactly out of the range of the feats used for DC’s street tier scaling. But does this necessarily mean Nightwing would scale to the Karate Kids other feats? He did cause a shockwave to counter another shockwave that would’ve destroyed Manhattan after all.

Ignoring the fact that this is yet another technique feat so it wouldn’t scale to physicals (as evidenced by him using shockwaves two times on record as a technique), Karate Kid is still a paygrade above the usual street tier roster. He comes from the 30th century, and is definitively THE master of all martial arts galaxy-wide to the point where he has harnessed this into a legitimate superpower. When Batman fought him, he was sick and amnesiac, and even then he was still capable of analyzing the injuries he dealt on Batman, and could still recognize his fighting style despite being weakened, and Batman was outright beaten by the Karate Kid in their first encounter. And though Dick got some hits in on Karate Kid during his time as Robin, it was pretty clear Val was holding back due to trying to reason with him that he isn’t an enemy.

Quakemaster Gun Magnitude

We don’t mean to be dicks (couldn’t resist the pun!), but we’ve noticed some discussions around assigning higher earthquake magnitudes, often around magnitude 7, to the same Quakemaster Gun feat calculation. We’d like to clarify that the original assumption of magnitude 6 remains the most accurate, as we have evidence showing that higher magnitudes would result in significantly more devastation.

First things first: the Mercalli scale doesn’t directly correspond to the Richter scale. Some argue for a magnitude 7 based on the Mercalli description, but this comparison overlooks key differences between the two scales. The Mercalli scale measures the intensity of an earthquake based on observed effects, while the Richter scale measures the earthquake's energy release. On the Mercalli magnitude 7, it’s description says “Damage negligible in buildings of good design and construction; slight to moderate in well-built ordinary structures; considerable damage in poorly built or badly designed structures; some chimneys broken." Going to the Richter scale, you would find out this description is the same as a magnitude 6 on that scale, which it’s 6.0 - 6.9 covers between magnitude 7 and magnitude 9 on Mercalli. All earthquake formulas use the Richter scale, so it's on this scale we need to be looking into.

Second: we know Gotham is similar to New York City, and we have an article where a seismologist cites a magnitude 7 as capable of turning Manhattan into history, because nothing would withstand a magnitude 7 because of the fault lines

Most importantly, we have a storyline on DC comics that basically is about an earthquake hitting Gotham: Cataclysm (which has a fake Quakemaster, ironically). Considering that a magnitude 7.6 earthquake destroyed Gotham almost beyond repair, it’s impossible for the gun to have hit Batman with even a magnitude 7 on a Richter scale considering the described minimal damage done by the gun.

Let’s Talk About Black Wind…

…Yeah, that feat. Despite being relatively new, it has already attained a certain level of infamy in the VS community. Is it legit? Well, it’s complicated. So, who exactly is Black Wind? Wouldn’t exactly blame you for not knowing who he is, since he has a grand total of 5 appearances in a single DC title. Black Wind is a metahuman terrorist from a fictional country who we later learn is fighting against the country’s corrupted government. He had a few run-ins with Cassandra Cain, and at the end of the arc when Bruce and Cassandra went to his country, they teamed up against Dr. Death, who was developing a chemical to help the military. So, the actual feat is that Dr. Death released his secret gas that transmutes people into gas, Black Wind tries to redirect the gas towards the military but Batman interrupts him, then Black Wind loses control and is forced to summon an enormous storm to absorb all the gas into himself. Now, it is a fairly classic storm moment, but first it is important to consider the storm's size. Now, several panels show the horizon point, and you can see that the entire sky is covered in clouds, implying that he did cover everything with them. And one important note is that Black Wind’s power isn’t actually weather manipulation - it’s wind manipulation. He didn’t create the storm, rather, he just summoned up a tornado with his wind powers and in the process, brought a bunch of clouds along with him.

What does that mean? That means that because he didn’t actually create the clouds with condensation, but simply brought the clouds along, the only reason the entire sky could be grey (it was totally sunny and completely cloudless before) is that he brought the clouds to be there - it couldn’t have had been because of the humidity, because that process takes time and the feat took a couple of seconds at best. Finally, because we know he brought the clouds from afar, and beforehand they were nowhere in sight, the range of his pulling in the clouds had to be far beyond the horizon. And his intention during the feat was to use the poison to massacre an entire army, with there being enough poison to kill an entire city, and he summoned up the storm to contain that poison.

So, there is nothing wrong with the calculation itself. Where it truly gets complicated is whether or not normal street tiers can scale to this feat. First of all, yes, it should scale to Black Wind in physical stats. Not only was controlling the tornado putting actual physical strain on him, and he survived standing in the literal middle of the tornado too (it was the poison that killed him, not that he overexerted himself). Most importantly, his superhuman strength and speed come directly from his aerokinesis. By his own description, he surrounds himself with his wind like a cloak and uses it to punch harder and run faster, more or less. And what actually makes other street tiers scale to him is his fight with Batman, where Batman clearly hurts and draws blood from him with his punches. However, that did require Batman to sucker punch and attack while Black Wind had a bag over his head, and as soon as he recovers, he downs Bruce with a single punch. Previous encounters are similarly inconclusive. When he first meets Cassandra Cain, he effortlessly dodges or blocks all her attacks, alongside blowing her away with wind at some point. Later on, Oracle states that Black Wind was “too fast, too strong” for Cassandra to reliably take on, and does note that Cass is one of the strongest DC street tiers, certainly above Dick. While this normally would be damning evidence, there was actually nothing that happened in this fight that actually suggested Black Wind was necessarily stronger than her, he didn’t take nor land any hits, just dodged or blocked all of hers, so there was nothing from which to form a conclusion that he was overwhelmingly strong for her. This is actually consistent with Barbara’s attitude towards Cassandra, with it being a running theme of the book that Babs is underselling Cass as a sort of a weird projection thing, as she wants Cass to lead a normal human life inaccessible to Barbara herself. Not to mention that Barbara’s rationale was that Black Wind was a metahuman, who Cassandra is not supposed to take on, despite her taking down numerous metahumans in the same series. It doesn’t help that in their second fight, Black Wind essentially swatted Cassandra away like a fly, though she very quickly stood up unharmed.

Overall, the scaling for the feat is complicated, but at best Dick should downscale from this feat pretty strongly, at the very least because Black Wind is a powerful metahuman, and has been strongly implied to be greatly superior even to Cass, who herself is way above Dick. Bruce directly harming Black Wind with physical attacks is good evidence for scaling, but again warrants downscaling at best, with how easily Black Wind regained the advantage even after being jumped, especially considering the storm feat was him at his absolute best and was obviously putting a lot of heavy strain into it. At the end of the day, we decided that this feat wouldn’t really affect the verdict, since DC has other feats in the similar ballpark that are much easier to argue, but it could still be left in as support, if you do decide to buy it.

THUNDERCATS HOOOO!

You might notice that we haven't mentioned anything on Thundercats in the scaling section, but let's talk about it right now. If you're a bit confused, there’s some comics published by WildStorm and Top Cow named "ThunderCats/Battle of the Planets", a miniseries showing a crossover between - take a guess - the Thundercats and the Science Ninja Team. In it, Ken/Mark cracks Lion-O’s gauntlet with punches and stops a full force swing from the Sword of Omens, matching strength with the Lord of the Thundercats, granting scaling between the characters. The series is referenced after it happens in the Top Cow Battle of the Planets comics, and should be considered canon to that specific continuity of Gatchaman.

Now, for the Thundercats, the series crossover is actually inside the Thundercats series as a whole. For example, later arcs in the series are set inside the larger show’s later seasons. This series was also written by Wildstorm comics, who was working with DC, which had Superman crossover with the Cats, so…yeah. Even if you were to restrict things to strictly what’s shown, Lion-O fought Mumm-Ra empowered by legendary Evil Spirits, with those same spirits causing a solar eclipse in the second issue of the first miniseries.

All things considered, it is technically arguable for this specific continuity of Gatchaman to scale to a planetary feat by Mumm-Ra, as weird as it sounds. We decided to not factor that in for multiple reasons, and it ultimately makes no impact on the verdict whatsoever. That being said, it’s very funny that Gatchaman has a scaling chain to Thundercats while the Silverhawks don’t.

Gatchaman Vehicle Scaling

While it might seem off-putting at first that Ken is getting scaled to the full power of the Gatchaspartan and, by consequence, the God Phoenix and New God Phoenix, we found that it is consistent for him to do so based on a good number of statements and feats.

First, we have the mechanics of the Hyper Shot. As explained previously, the Hyper Shot is a technique performed with Ken and the Gatchaspartan. It works by pushing the energy generator of the Gatchaspartan to the limit, making the G-1 expel a high amount of energy to Ken’s Gatchaman Fencer, using his suit and body as a medium, turning him into a ballistic projectile. It is directly stated Ken is the only one capable of withstanding the energy flow of the Hyper Shot because of his superhuman durability, as it was proven with an experiment. The ISO conducts a test where a normal bird uses the Hyper Shot and penetrates a steel wall, later combusting and dying. The results are clear: according to the scientists, the user must have superhuman strength and durability, as well as perfect coordination of the suit so as to not overcompensate energy levels. Dr. Nambu states that the suit must protect the user, but the attack still puts tremendous strain on Ken, and makes his body withstand absurd amounts of energy, as Ken at a point gets extremely sick from the amount of radiation his body receives with this attack. Note, of course, that the Hyper Shot should be logically superior to the Firebird attacks of the God Phoenix and the New God Phoenix, as it is the strongest attack that the Gatchaspartan (a vehicle superior to the two previous ones) can perform. On a similar note, simply using the Firebird channels a ridiculous amount of temperature and gravity on the user, to the point that only the Science Ninja Team's training ensures safety while using it.

Let’s elaborate this further by examining the most powerful variation of the Hyper Shot: the Ultra Hyper Shot. In episode 44 of Gatchaman Fighter, an antimatter planetoid is being sent to Earth to destroy us. An energy barrier is put around it, and it successfully shields the planetoid from 6 nuclear missiles with no damage at all. The Gatchaspartan must overpower the barrier and successfully set a chain reaction with a missile to destroy the planetoid. Arriving there, Ken is supercharged with the Hyper Shot, withstanding even more energy than normal, and he jumps out of the ship, successfully cutting a hole in the barrier, giving an opening to his teammates to fire a missile and save the world. Ken is recovered and he’s momentarily unconscious from the violence of the attack, with his body steaming from the amount of energy it was exposed to, but he soon wakes up and is overall fine. With this, we have a good amount of evidence to why the power of the Gatchaspartan should be roughly comparable to Ken’s own AP, thanks to Newton’s third law and several statements directly referring to the fact Ken has to be able to physically take the absurd amounts of energy flowing through him to his sword.

Lastly, but more of a bonus section: the Gatchaman Fencer is blatantly superior to the Bird Missiles of the Eagle Sharp, and by consequence the Bird Missiles of the God Phoenix, an inferior model. Ken’s body can withstand the energy of fully charging the Gatchaman Fencer as exemplified by the antimatter planetoid feat too, which would obviously kill normal people, meaning he is comparable to the power output. Mind you that the energy that powers the Gatchaman Fencer is the same as the one that runs on the G-1’s engine.

In conclusion, many instances of scaling to the full extent of Gatchaman vehicles exist for Ken, thanks to blatant statements about his physiology and simple scaling chains. Much like scaling individual Power Rangers to the power of their Zords, we find that Ken physically scaling to his vehicles is perfectly fine.

Galactor did WHAT to the Sun???

Ok so uh…don’t even know how to start this, so let’s just get into it. The Solar Shift plot’s intention is obvious; to move the Sun. So, how on Earth would even the mighty Gatchaman scale to this? Well, strap in for hardcore versus brainrot at its finest!

The plan works by building several bases on Earth, Mars, and Venus. All of these would draw energy from the planet in its entirety, like drawing energy from beneath Earth’s mantle, and combining this energy into a planet’s singular beam to launch at the Sun. The combined beams (5 for Earth) would internally multiply their power, combine with the other planets beams, and make an enormous explosion to continually move the star wherever Galactor wanted it to. This is not some one-off line either, as it is VERY consistently bashed into your skull how dangerous moving the Sun is, with several examples, results, and indicators of this to the point that it is impossible to ignore. We are outright shown it moving the sun several separate times, from seeing it move as an object in space, to glimpsing footage of it moving from Nambu’s sensors as well as Nambu stating it was moved, and watching the final stages of the Solar Shift plan from Galactor’s own computers, so it having the power to move the sun is undeniable. It was also stated able to move other stars as well, so it’s just certified, stamped, and 100% consistent.

This understandably causes absolutely absurd ecological devastation, which is expressly noted by literally every source possible. Gel Sadra (leader of Galactor, save Leader X) viewing the aforementioned Galactor plans for Solar Shift expressly noted moving the sun away would doom not just the Earth, but the entire Solar System. Similarly, geniuses like Nambu and Pandora have noted this plan would destroy the Earth as well as the Solar System, which the Narrator backs up, as does Leader X (and he made it). On Earth, moving the Sun caused temperature spikes and heat waves over the entire planet, which includes melting the glaciers of Antarctica, wrecking several cities all over the globe, and raising the overall temperature worldwide, both gradually and all at once in further usages of the beams while causing massive abnormalities all over the planet. Its gravitational devastation created tidal waves large enough to eclipse buildings in size and deadly enough to turn an entire city into Sonic Adventure’s final boss, with the episode literally being named “The Worst Tsunami in History.” Its further weather devastation includes causing a storm stretching from Africa to Southern Europe (over 6,000 miles), volcanoes erupting off the coast of Siberia, and more, with Nambu reiterating that more alterations to the sun would devastate Earth’s climate. It was also noted to cause a Magnitude 8.7 Earthquake in the ocean, resulting in the Tsunami. These weather irregularities were even noted by the Narrator to be capable of destroying the Earth all on their own, so it’s understandable how Sadra would refer to it as the worst crisis in history. Oh, and just so you know, this entire scheme was because Leader X is a petty bitch and aimed to $%#&ing RAM HIS HOME PLANET with the Sun. He nearly doomed an entire solar system…just for that. Most average Galactor plot indeed.

Now that all of that is done, how on Earth would Ken scale to this? Well, the New God Phoenix vehicle happened to fly over the main beam (not a side beam, the MAIN BEAM) BY ACCIDENT MIND YOU, and was just…fine. It unintentionally survived a blast from a beam that made explosions to move the Sun, and it was fine. Now, obviously the vehicle didn’t take the full brunt of the force to move a literal star, as it had to combine with 2 other beams from Mars and Venus to create the explosions to move the Sun, and could potentially be extrapolated further if you assume the main beams themselves multiplied. However, no matter how much you want to reduce the feat and energy attributed to it and etc…it’s still energy that could move the Sun. Given that Ken scales to his vehicles, like the very machine that performs the feat, that means Ken himself scales to a portion of 101.5 FOE, crazy as that sounds.

Finally, your main concern would likely claim this is an Outlier™, which would be understandable…if Ken’s writers weren’t high as $%&# when they made Gatchaman II, as earlier in the show the Firebird achieved something of even greater scale. It was able to produce more energy than a Galactor machine could handle, when said machine created a dimension large enough to house several stars and a Nebula. So Gatchaman power levels reaching this kind of absurdity is actually fairly consistent, and it shouldn’t really come as a surprise when simply activating his suit is similar in energy levels to a newborn star, and several hundred Petatons of TNT.

TLDR; The Solar Shift moved the sun, was able to move others, caused several storms and ecological disasters on Earth as a result of getting moved, and the NGP directly tanked the main beam from Earth. Ergo, the ship (and by extension Ken) scale to a decent portion of the energy to move the Sun, which is over 100 FOE in this case. You can’t exactly call it an outlier either, as the Firebird has achieved even greater feats, and Gatchaman himself has his fair share of batshit insane levels of power. Thus, Solar System level Gatchaman…IS REAL!!!

Verdict

Stats

Nightwing, the defender of Bludhaven, is considered by many as one of the best in DC in terms of peak physique. He's kept up with many humans and superhumans in terms of street tiers. He's gone toe to toe with many and won whenever the plot didn't decide to fuck him over. He's beaten villains like Blockbuster, Joker, Deathstroke. He's beaten heroes like Roy Harper and even in a direct fight, The Dark Knight himself: BatGod. Batman can survive a blast from an Earthquake gun, which can get 59.2 Kilotons of TNT. Nightwing has drawn blood from Batman and even beaten him before in a fight, so he can upscale from Adam Strange surviving the expansion of Earth at high speeds, which gets to 77 Kilotons of TNT. For a slightly higher end, Dick has fought and even knocked out Roy Harper (aka Speedy or Arsenal): who survived his gun exploding on him, which was equivalent to 600 Terawatts or 143 Kilotons of TNT. As for Speed, Nightwing himself has dodged bullets, lasers, energy attacks, etc. Just as before, Dick has kept up with characters like Batman and even Deathstroke, who's dodged sword swings from Katana. Katana was able to deflect a laser with her sword, which gets to 2.27c or 2 times the speed of light. Dick can also scale to Black Canary, who can react in a nanosecond, which gets from 3.3 - 4.3c. In conclusion: Nightwing would get from Town to Large Town and FTL.

As for the Gatchaman, Ken the Eagle, Ken has fought characters who can break boulders, knock out multiple people in single punches, and cut through a barrier that 6 nukes couldn't break through…Wait what. But for real, Ken being able to break through a barrier that 6 bombs couldn't would get 54 Megatons of TNT, slightly more powerful than the Tsar bomb. As for other feats, just transforming into the Science Ninja has been compared to a Newborn Star, which can get to 900 Petatons of TNT. Ken can be compared to the Infamous Galactor, a terrorist organization that has created many deadly weapons and has plenty of capable fighters. From missiles that create earthquakes that can threaten Los Angeles, to machines being able to cause volcanic eruptions, which gets from Megatons to Gigatons of TNT. And to machines that can pull Meteors from Space, to machines being able to move the sun itself. The latter feat getting to 101.5 Foe, or over 100 Supernovas. In case you think the Sun feat is an Outlier, there is in fact another feat to talk about. One of Galactor's machines was able to create another dimension that had stars and a nebula, and the team were able to overload the machine by using the Firebird. You might ask how they would scale to the ship, well quite simply, the entire team has survived the Firebird while it was happening and it's obvious that it was affecting them when the move was happening. Joe the Condor had to directly use himself as a conductor to let the Firebird happen as the ship was damaged for a bit, and Ken is comparable to him. Ryu the Horned Owl has even survived the process of the Firebird without wearing his suit. So the entire team can scale to the ships. The Dimension would get to Solar System levels of power, about 1.18 kiloFoe. That’s Perfect Cell level. And Ken would overall upscale this thanks to physically scaling to the Hyper Shot, which is above the God Phoenix and New God Phoenix. As for Speed, Ken has dodged gunfire, energy attacks, and lasers…. wait this sounds familiar-.... Ken has reacted to a light ray which gets to 0.05c, or relativistic. He’s moved in tandem with Electromagnetic Waves a few times, the first gets from 0.63c to 2.52c, the 2nd getting to 2.56c. In conclusion: Ken the Eagle would be City level to Solar System level in AP and Rela to FTL.

Overall, even using lower ends on Ken's side, he would still be over 337 times stronger than Nightwing. Using the higher feats for Ken would make this a 1.6880825e+30 times difference with just the 101 Foe feat. As for Speed, Nightwing would be faster by 1.6 times greater, not enough to blitz in the slightest. In conclusion, Gatchaman overpowers the Knight of Blüdhaven.

Arsenal/Abilities

While Ken may be holding a huge advantage when it comes to the stat trinity, Nightwing is a Batman character. Characters like him are often known for their wide arsenals and ranges of things they can do - as a result, maybe he can turn the tide through overwhelming Ken? To not beat around the bush, Nightwing gets a bit outclassed.

First of all, Ken’s suit unfortunately counters most of the things Dick can do with his arsenal. Shock based attacks, sonic attacks, explosives, his sharp projectiles, are all things that the suit has blocked before, meaning that very few of them would realistically work on Ken to begin with, since Ken has resisted all of those in spades, especially due to his suit and helmet providing resistances against tougher abilities like the sonic wingdings or the bodysuit’s electric shock. And while much of Ken’s arsenal is technology based, Dick’s EMP has a few caveats that make it not that great. First of all, it doesn’t actually help him land anything on Ken to begin with - his suit would still block almost all of Dick’s non punching options, and he still wouldn’t be able to actually do almost anything to Ken himself; while he’d disable some of his gadgets and his suit, it wouldn’t really pan out for much.

On top of that, Ken’s own arsenal is simply a lot better prepared to kill someone then Nightwing’s is; he just has as much stuff, but unlike Dick, his options aren’t stopped by Dick’s defense besides his knockout-gas due to Dick’s gas mask, which Ken doesn’t particularly need to win this fight anyways, and options like the Gatchaman Fencer would pretty much disintegrate Dick on the spot, and his ranged weapons offer a lot of versatility, like storing miniature bombs in his boomerang, which is a lot easier in returning to Ken’s hand compared to Nightwing’s escrima sticks. Nothing Nightwing does can really catch Ken by surprise, especially tools like the direction detector, which would completely neuter Nightwing’s stealth if he tried to get the drop on Ken.

And when it comes to vehicles, it should be no surprise that Ken’s vehicles are far, far better than anything Dick has. Not only is Ken generally far better with his vehicles, and his vehicles are generally far more versatile in a fight, even if you don’t think Ken himself should scale to the vehicles, the vehicles scale directly to the solar system feats, and at worst would still have nuclear missiles as his starting attacks. As a result of this, the moment Ken goes in one of his vehicles, Nightwing cannot hurt it or Ken at all, and effectively loses the match as a result, as he will be completely impervious to anything Dick could do.

In terms of abilities, Ken is fairly obviously the only one here with any abilities, and his provide a good amount of advantages as well. Dancing Flames give him a huge area of effect that Dick can’t really dodge with his acrobatics. Techniques such as the Shadow Clones, and Invisibility also make it easy for him to get the one hit on Dick he needs to win, and the ability to be blinded by Bird Flash or knocked off your feet by heavy winds of Ken’s cape will only make it harder.

Lastly however, one might wonder if Nightwing has any ways to possibly take Ken out of his Gatchaman form, since as a human he is virtually useless. Nothing in his abilities or arsenal would really do the trick, not even something like the hypnos, given Ken has resisted far worse mental abilities, and the fact that it requires being up close, which would be a death sentence for Nightwing. Even a slight speed advantage wouldn’t really help this if Ken has AoE with the Dancing Flames, so Nightwing would be out of options pretty fast.

Overall, while Dick’s arsenal isn’t the worst, Ken can counter and surpass basically anything he can do, meaning that Ken should firmly take arsenal and abilities as well.

Tertiary Factors

For tertiary factors, there are some nuances to this match up we don't want to overlook. Skill is quite interesting to analyze for both. Even when he was a child, Dick was one of the greatest acrobats in the world, this raw talent combined with his training from Batman and others has made him one of the most skilled warriors in the DC Universe. Ken has been training since a young age as well, learning several martial arts and Ninja Techniques. When it comes to raw hand to hand, Dick Grayson has better showings and training of CQC, though Ken isn't far behind. Ken makes up for any shortcomings in martial arts with his ninja techniques, supernatural techniques he can perform with his skill and cybernetic parts that Dick has no equivalent for. But Nightwing has faced far more pure martial artists and skilled individuals, and knows far more techniques to boot that would put him firmly ahead of Ken in raw skill.

In terms of intelligence, both are natural leaders and prodigies in their fields. Ken is a master class pilot and Dick an incredible acrobat. Both are expert battle tacticians that have made some quite high IQ plays in impossible scenarios. Nightwing may have stronger showings in Detective skills, but Ken has thought up ways to escape alternate dimensions in minutes. Comparing their feats of intelligence, both are extremely cunning leaders that have outsmarted their way out of the deadliest scenarios. For IQ we will say they are equal as neither have any real advantages over the other, just specializations they prefer.

As both are long running super heroes, these two have dealt with all kinds of foes and crises. Dick’s early years in Gotham have put em against some of the craziest villains Comics have, including the likes of the Joker, Poison Ivy, Two-Face. While on the Titans, Dick moved from street tier threats to facing off against entities like Trigon and other cosmic threats. He may have been physically outmatched, but his leadership and smarts were invaluable in saving the day time and time again. Ken has been leading the Ninja science team for years, and has fought the deadly Galactor for just as long. On paper fighting the same faction again and again may not seem impressive, but Galactor might just be one of the most insane evil organizations In fictions. Galactor has moved the sun, started a nuclear conflict, killed the population of New York, dropped an antimatter planet on Earth. An insane world destroying weapon is just another Tuesday in Ken's career, he faces far more world destroying threats on the regular than Dick, but Dick's are probably more insane. All in all, we will just have experienced equally insane bad guys and threats to the world.

Conclusion

Summary

“I'm going to help my friends. I'm going to help anyone who needs me. I'm going to beat the bad guys. And I'm going to do it as...Nightwing.”

Advantages:

  • More varied and impressive martial arts training

  • Slightly faster…

  • Could probably deduce the Substitution technique due to being a master tactician

  • Equal in overall intelligence and experience

  • Has a great ass

  • Dick Butt

Disadvantages:

  • Gets trounced heavily in AP and durability

  • …but the speed isn't enough to avoid Ken’s large AOE attacks

  • Has no answer to any of the Science Ninja Techniques such as the Blinding Light, Dancing Flames, or Shadow Clones

  • The Gatchaman Fencer and Lightning Slash would kill Nightwing instantly

  • Vehicles such as the G-1 are far superior to Nightwing’s vehicles, and any firepower would also kill Nightwing

  • Has no way to take Ken out of his Gatchaman form

  • Likes Pineapple Pizza

  • Devin Grayson

  • Ric Grayson

  • We made way too many dick jokes

"Wherever evil lurks, we will root it out! That is the Science Ninja motto!"

Advantages:

  • Has a massive AP superiority regardless of what ends you use, or how high you push scaling

  • More willing to go lethal from the get go with no hesitation

  • Arsenal is more suited for, well… killing people

  • Superior AoE with the Dancing Flames technique

  • Vehicles like the G-1 are better than any vehicle Dick has access to

  • Science Ninja Techniques such as Shadow Clone or Blinding Light can disorient or confuse Nightwing

  • Equal in overall intelligence and experience

  • Broke DC’s winning streak in Bang's Blogs

  • Alex Ross art

Disadvantages:

  • Slightly slower

  • Not as skilled in pure hand-to-hand combat

  • Substitution or stealth wouldn’t really work

  • Slapped a 16 year old girl dude wtf

Unfortunately, Nightwing gets firmly outclassed across the board by adventurous ninja of science fiction. His only real advantages are skill and speed, which are of little use to an opponent who is thousands upon thousands of times stronger and more durable, and has weapons far deadlier and more direct. The Gatchaman Fencer would instantly kill him, and his varied abilities that provide range, AoE, disorientation, and much more dangerous stealth methods would give Ken a fairly easy victory, backed by the crushing weight of his high-powered vehicles. Nightwing’s most effective options as far as weapons also require too much time to pull off to even hope to get Ken out of his Gatchaman form, compared to the plentiful amount of options Ken has to end the fight whenever he wants. Though Nightwing was gonna wing it, Ken the Eagle swooped down and turned Dick into feather-brains.

The winner is Ken the Eagle.

Final Tally

  2. Can't the EMP shutdown the wrist communicator and revert back

    1. No, the wrist communicator can only be reversed by the specific radio wave frequency that allows them to transform. Since Nightwing has no means of identifying and replicating the frequency before Ken uses his many wincons against him, it's weakness he can't exploit

  3. Yeah, this seems pretty straight-forward. I love Nightwing, but he can only do so much. I don't even think including stuff from the Teen Titans cartoon would change much if I'm being honest. Though, that does make me wonder: Would The Gatchaman vs The Silverhawks be a more even fight? I don't know much about the Silverhawks and their scaling, so now I'm curious.
