Bang's Blogs: Clayface vs Sandman

“Rocks and minerals: the oldest storytellers.” -A.D. Posey

Basil Karlo, the ultimate Clayface.

Flint Marko, the sinister Sandman.

Being a criminal means not getting caught, to steal in the night but walk during the day as someone else and continue to go unseen.. But for these two, they take being someone else to the next level. After exposure to the gradation of sand and clay, these two malleable shapeshifters became some of the strongest and most dangerous enemies that Gotham or New York City have ever seen, capable of towering over buildings, imitating their enemies, growing multiple limbs, and became some of the most dangerous enemies to Batman and Spider-Man. Along the way however, they really did become someone else, finding redemption in being a hero when given a chance to do the right thing, becoming a part of the Gotham Knights and Avengers, proving that not just their appearances can be changed, but their hearts as well. But what happens when you mix together clay and sand? It’ll create a dense soil Will Clayface walk over the Marko Beach, or will Sandman send Clayface back into the Earth where he belongs? Only one can win this make-shift DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Start…

Sandman is pretty easy as far as what we will include goes, and his entire Earth-616 history will be accounted for. For Clayface, we will be using Basil Karlo, as he is the most mainstream and consistent version of Clayface in the comics. We will be taking into account his character and history as far back as his more human origins, as they did not change even after Crisis on Infinite Earths, but to avoid using repeat feats for why the histories are merged anyways, heres Clayface in disguise saying the Justice League’s early adventures are often debated, as a nod to the various reboots in DC continuity, thus all of Pre/Post-Flashpoint will be used. Boom. Unique!

Background

Clayface

The show must go on as they say, and it doesn’t wait for anyone. The famous and classic horror film of Dread Castle was set to be remastered, and to Basil Karlo, something was missing; himself. He was the star of the original movie, and felt as if it was his right to be on the advising staff for the new set of actors, but no one reached out to him. So he decided that if he couldn’t be the star, then no one could. He set out to kill all the actors on set, donning a mask made of clay to conceal his identity, starting the legend of Clayface. And then, he started killing the actors one by one in the way they were supposed to die in the films, and in sequential order. But he was stopped by the dynamic duo, the Batman and Robin, and went to prison shortly. But that would not be the end of Clayface, finding escape after his prison ambulance went down a cliff. He once again donned the mask of clay and had a new target; Julie Madison, upcoming actor and the fiancee of Bruce Wayne. But once again, he was stopped by Batman and Robin. Something had to change.

While in prison, it came to his attention that there were multiple Clayfaces that exist, as one of them, Sondra Fuller came to visit him in prison out of curiosity. Karlo used this to his advantage, and suggested a partnership with all the Clayfaces, creating a new group of super-villains called the Mud Pack. Lady Clayface broke Prestone Payne, Clayface III out of Arkham Asylum, while Basil would try to recover the remains of Clayface II, Matt Hagen. Together, the Mud Pack launched their assault on the Batman, and went as planned; overpowering the Caped Crusader, allowing Karlo to enact the next part of his plan, as he had done so years ago; the betrayal. He double-crossed the other two Clayfaces, having taken their blood samples without them knowing, imbuing Basil with both of their unique powers to become the ultimate Clayface, setting a precedent as one of Batman’s physically mightiest foes. Although his new powers made him a terrifying foe to face, Batman and the Looker, a member of the Outsiders, would prove to be his downfall, melting him into the ground and sending him into the Earth’s core where he belonged. But that wouldn’t be the last we had seen of Clayface…

With the many continuities DC has presented, there are lots of tales told of the adventures of Clayface. Because of Clayface’s ability to be anyone at any point, it was no surprise that a force of nature with his kind of powers would venture beyond Gotham City, ranging from becoming a member of the Secret Society of Super-Villains, to going into space to fight against Morgaine le Fey. Even within Gotham, Clayface seemed to be in and out of prison depending on where he was needed due to being a powerful asset. But under all of that thick mud substance, was still Basil Karlo, an actor and formerly a star. He was something. He was someone. One of his escapes from Arkham acted as a turning point for him in his adventures, as instead of breaking free and wreaking havoc on Gotham, he went to the movies to see the re-release of “The Metamorphosis”, starring…Basil Karlo. When Batman and Batwoman came upon him, Batman saw no difference between the man on the screen and the man watching it. He believed that he could change his life around if given the chance. Thus, his criminal ways were foregone and joined up with Batman’s new crime fighting team, the Gotham Knights. Even after his apparent “death” and resurfacing, Karlo remembered the chance he was given by Batman and gave the same chance to others, helping other Gotham criminals like him like Killer Croc or Firefly atone for their past and really make a difference, by taking down the Peacekeeper drones that were trying to take Gotham by hand. Though his life had been taken away, it seems that Karlo made it to the top anyways, as the star of his own movie, written and directed by Clayface…

…Until Dark Crisis completely forgot about any of this by having Clayface try to steal a Motherbox from the Hall of Justice. Thanks DC.

Sandman

From his earliest points in life, William Baker was determined to make something of himself that would last. Born to Floyd Baker and his wife (unnamed), Mrs. Baker was forced to raise young William all on his own due to his father leaving when he was just an infant. His most fond childhood memories he could recall were being taken to the beach, where he quickly found a love for building sand castles. His love for making things by hand would carry over to his academics, enrolling in art classes in hopes of making art projects that would woo the ladies. His biggest crush however was his teacher Miss Flint, who got engaged to a stockbroker, which convinced the young Baker that the way to win over a girl’s heart is with money rather than charm. But it wasn’t easy with him also being picked on by a school bully named Vic, and on the same day his teacher got married, Vic trashed William’s hard work and art, and he went home that day not telling anyone what happened, determined to look after himself. The next time Vic and his goons attacked William, he fought back and gave them a beating of their own. Although he got in trouble, the bullies were now afraid of him, and the ladies had noticed his will to fight back, and William felt joy, and that this would be something he made of himself, but to others around him, he became a bigger bully, taking over Vic’s gang and giving himself a tougher sounding name known as Flint Marko. It wasn’t long before his antics began to catch up to him, from assaulting his coach, racking up gambling debts, and even committing petty crimes with Vic, it wasn’t long before Flint landed himself in prison…the same one as his father.

When he was seemingly out of prison, Flint’s life wasn’t really the same. He came back to his old bully and cheerleader girlfriend Marcy having an affair, causing Flint to beat up Vic and go on another crime spree that got him caught once again and in prison. This time however, he was sent to a prison at the very remote Stryker’s Island, but Flint broke out again, this time with a manhunt led by himself. Though the accounts tend to vary, he was running away from the authorities when he was exposed to radiation nearby of a nuclear bomb testing site, and when he hid in a cave, his radioactive body began to interact with the sand on the ground, turning Marko into a being composed of sand. But he was still a wanted man, and fled to New York City under the new criminal name of the Sandman. And his criminal spree seemed to have just begun. But in its way was a hero known as the Amazing Spider-Man, and the two battled it out, and Sandman came close to nearly ripping the mask that concealed the identity of Peter Parker. But as iconic as their first battle was, it was equally iconic when the Sandman was defeated by…Spider-Man using a vacuum cleaner to leave for the authorities to pick up, once again sending him to prison with his father. The father and son pair would face Spider-Man again, this time falling to mother nature as the rain came down and the lightning struck, and both Spider-Man and his father left the little puddle that was Flint Marko.

His life of crime was one full of opportunities, taking on many forms over the years and being caught up in various villainous groups, most memorably being a founding member of the Sinister Six, joining some of Spider-Man’s most long time foes such as Doctor Octopus, Electro, and Kraven the Hunter as a way to stand against the Spider-Man, and in their outings have been on many criminal adventures, like defeating the Avengers Academy and Intelligencia. But under that sand hide of his, Marko was still someone who wanted to make something of his life, rather than just being a petty criminal. The opportunity of his redemption came in a very bizarre way, being pit against Spider-Man once again while he was under the influence of Calculus, a Young God who unleashed a cannibalistic swarm and the Outlaws against the Avengers. After breaking free of the Space Phantom’s control, both teams decided to put aside their differences, even with Spider-Man specifically, to figure out how to stop the killer swarm, putting a stop to it and surprisingly leaving on good terms with the heroes. To many people’s surprise, Sandman was actually elected a probationary Avenger on standby by Captain America, going on to be a hero in many endeavors, like stopping Doombots, or even when not on the Avengers, saving lives from a burning building like a hero would. With all his powers and abilities, ultimately Marko was able to make something of himself, able to stand tall when the waves of uncertainty crashed against the shore of the Sandman…

…Until the Wizard brought back his evil personality using an ID machine and he became a villain again. Thanks Marvel.

Experience & Skill

Clayface

Before becoming Clayface, Basil Karlo was a master actor and disguises, and it is reflected in his shapeshifting abilities whenever he turns into someone, being able to fool even the smartest of characters, from humans to aliens such as Superman, fooling him with his Wonder Woman disguise. His skills carried over to his plan in becoming Clayface in the first place, orchestrating the meet up of all the other Clayfaces to form an alliance called the Mud Pack, despite being powerless and in jail, before he double-crossed them all via taking their blood samples without their knowledge, becoming the ultimate Clayface. Clayface himself however isn’t as intelligent, due to his clay physiology making his memories fuzzier, making him more murderous and animalistic the longer he acts as Clayface, but his time with Batman and the Gotham Knights helped train his mind to prevent this.

In terms of skill and experience, Clayface is surprisingly quite the fighter. He’s taken up training with Batman, now knowing Kung Fu and being able to more precisely control his bodies to also throw hands like himself. He’s picked up quite some techniques, like being able to pull a Batman and disappear from Catwoman despite being right behind her and he matched Batgirl in hand to hand after morphing into her. His skills in acting and deception have also seemed to have returned, as he was able to help Catwoman frame Detective Kollak for her kidnapping by disguising himself as multiple people. But Clayface does have one issue: he's too reliant on abilities and he doesn't have much prowess in hand to hand. But he has started getting better with training in fighting robots.

Sandman

Sandman is self-taught in some forms in science, thus has a great deal of experience and knowledge in how to use his sand physiology in advantages, designing his own costume to help him learn how and master his sandy abilities and uses his suit to mix chemicals to create an oil slick out of his sand. This often leads people to believe that Marko is an idiot when in reality, he is quite intelligent in using his sand abilities in ways that rely more on thinking and understanding, especially against the opponent. He can disassemble a Doombot with understanding of how it works, and even defuse a bomb. He’s also taken it upon himself to train how to lip-synch, using a recorder to play over his mouth while he is disguised as someone. He’s also at times managed to be surprisingly stealthy, being able to sneak up on Hawkeye.

Sandman as a fighter has known basic street fighting since his high school days, on account of his numerous scraps he has gotten himself into, but eventually he would also undergo training in hand-to-hand combat. During his time as an Avenger, Sandman would participate in the rigorous training under Captain America, sparring with fellow superhumans and learning how to use his sand in ways he hasn’t before, and would even be a trainer himself to the Wild Pack recruits and the Rhino. However, he can struggle against particularly skilled enemies, such as when the Human Torch easily overpowered Sandman, throwing him around and stating to be superior in skill via his fighting lessons from Thing and karate/judo lessons from Reed

Equipment

Clayface

He has no need for a weapon. He IS the weapon.

Sandman

Suit

Made by the Wizard and tricked out with stolen equipment from Mr. Fantastic, Sandman with some chemical mixtures made it a suit meant to enhance his sand abilities. The suit comes equipped with a slippery oil/sand hybrid, an adhesive that lets him walk on walls, and the option to solidify himself into a brick wall.

Abilities

Clayface

Clay Physiology

Clayface is made of a chemically altered, thick mud-like material, making his body malleable and can be controlled in a variety of ways, such as Clayface using clay as projectiles, launching globs of clay to restrain people or capturing his enemies with a clay web. The same clay that’s strong enough to hold Ivy down, with her stating she can’t break free from it, and neither could Batman. The Flash also said that the clay was preventing him from vibrating through it or shaking it off with his speed. Basil loves using this clay for suffocation, he loves doing that-, like, really, though at times he doesn’t (poor guy). He's also capable of telekinetically controlling, moving and morphing his clay however he likes even when it isn’t attached to his body He can cut himself into pieces and morph back together for a sneak or surprise attack. And with his unique body he can fully negate fall damage of others by wrapping them in himself.

Clayface’s physiology is very unique, with Geo-Force noting that Clayface is made up of montmorillonite clay, a clay with amazing healing properties, and that his type of clay is from the smectite family, which is able to absorb properties at a greater rate. Firestorm also detected him as radioactive protoplasma. His clay is also made out of nutrients and can somehow give people air to keep them alive inside of him. His blood is also similar to that of Preston Pain, who's blood is more like a mineral virus than real blood. His body is also sparse of any human material. Clayface is also completely fine being out in space, he was even fine after getting launched into outer space by Mary Marvel.

Unfortunately, being made of clay doesn’t always come with some great perks, you see, when Basil goes into his clay form, his mind becomes elastic, his memories gets a little funky making him unable to remember past events of what happened and his moral dilemma disintegrates, making him unable to tell from right or wrong, like an animal, he just does what he wants and gets what he means, no matter who’s in his way. Due to this the longer he stays in his form the more dangerous he becomes, the more likely he is to murder people

Imitation

Being an actor at heart, Clayface can change into pretty much anything, including other people, often using them as aliases or disguises, blending in with the crowd until the time is right to strike. He’s disguised himself as Batman (or Bruce Wayne), Barbara Gordon, Batwoman, the Joker, the Penguin, Solomon Grundy, Lucius Fox, Midnight or Jim Gordon. His mimicry of people is strong enough that even Wonder Woman was fooled by his disguise as Superman until Clayface revealed himself, same goes with Power Girl getting fooled when Clayface imitated Wild Cat. Not only is Clayface quick with his imitations, he’s also nasty with them, completely transforming himself into Natalya to distract Batman mid punch. He kinda has a thing of using imitations to torment Batman

He was able to impersonate nine of the victims killed by his own hand, like Beatrice Hess, Rebecca Desalia, Ali Keshai, David Stellis, Jameesha Monroe, Paul Baldurra, Max Taylor and Harry Silverman, he was also able to become a bunch of random civilians in seconds. Sometimes he has disguised himself as objects as well, like a statue, a fan,a wall, a fireplace, an entire room or a good chunk of the city to blend in. He can even turn himself into different animals like a bull.

What makes his imitations horrifying is that he copies the person he imitates perfectly down to the genetic level. Making even Batman’s computer see Clayface as the person he disguises as, even analyzing it several times with 100% certainty. Which is likely why he could mimic Bruce Wayne’s voice to neutralize his own Bat-Bots. He has also shown to perfectly mimic Nightwing voice, and he used this to completely fuck with Batman for a while when he was acting like Jason Todd. Speaking of Jason, when he mimics someone, he doesn’t just look and sound like them, he also fights like them and gains their powers and skills! As not only was he able to mess with Batman while he was imposing as Jason, he was also able to fight equally with him and hurt him. And also another thing to note Clayface can give others his clay to impersonate whatever he wants.

Shapeshifting

Clayface can turn his body into a weapon, or multiple weapons at that. This leads to him being able to form weapons from his body such as fists, hammers, spears, hooks, chainsaws, clamps, spikes, chainsaws, shields, clubs, mallets, nets, or even a mech suit for Batman to wear. He’s also able to stretch his limbs out incredibly far, and also make multiple limbs. He’s even able to turn into animals with his abilities like Eagles. He can turn into non offensive items as well like suits of armor, fans, crowbars. Clayface can trap parasites Inside clay things and are able to hold them.

Density Control

Clayface’s body is also extremely malleable, capable of controlling his density to either be pretty much a liquid or as hard as a brick wall, and in most cases it is used to parry damage or escape in a way that lets him leave the scene entirely. He can become loose enough to fit right into holes in a wall, slip through a door, pass through a net, flow out of an energy cage, pass through a ventilation system and metal gates, and escape any prison that isn’t entirely airtight. He can also turn his body rock solid, primarily to form weapons from his hands or shrug off heavier attacks like punches or bullets. He can also use this power offensively such as turning himself into a massive flood of mud to drown his victims, use it to trap creatures inside of him by hardening himself, grow hard spikes on his back or generate huge ones across the ground, capable of trapping the Batmobile. His favorite use of his density control is shooting out a piece of clay from himself at his opponent and then hardening it, making them completely stuck and unable to move or do anything, just like what he did with Ivy.

Duplication

Clayface has shown to be capable of making copies of himself, his clones are so precise they’re capable of doing the same thing he can do. He’s capable of duplicating into at least ten different bodies which the Bat Family put to good use for helping guide hundreds of civilians to safety. It’s worth noting that Clayface says that he’ll lose himself a few hours in with how many duplicates of himself he made and later on says that it was hard for him to think between them. However this issue seemingly faded as he was fine when he duplicated himself to fight some ninjas and when he used a bunch of duplicates to fight the justice league. He also absorbed all the clay from the mud room, a room made from Basil’s own material, the same mud room that could create hundreds upon hundreds of joker clones made out of clayface’s clay. There were so many to the point it overwhelmed the bat family and could potentially hurt them. He’s also smart with his copies, tricking Batman into fighting a lifeless husk instead of the real Clayface. He also used both his shapeshifting and duplication to get the jump on Batwing and Azrael.

Regeneration

Clayface’s malleable body allows him to come back from physical damage that should crush him, kill him, or just in general obliterate his body. He can regenerate from slashing, stabbing, ax to the face, shooting, getting decapitated, getting crushed, getting blasted, people blasting through the chest, exploded by a rocket, Robin dropping a charge on him, getting exploded from the inside, getting superheated by Superman and then shattered, getting blown up by a grenade, blown up by Batman, or even getting his core super heated with to 1,000 degree Fahrenheit and his cellular structure undermined he was still able to reform (as shown above). He can be frozen solid and regen from it instantly. He was somehow even able to come back from being completely destabilized molecularly, which made it so that he wasn’t able to put himself back together or control his clay, effectively killing for good right? Nope he just came back fine later with his full moveset intact. It’s gotten so strong to the point he somehow came back to being completely absorbed by Ivy’s plants and turned to stone. He also quickly recovered from food poisoning, just simply expelling out toxic waste instead. As well as Clayface surviving an attack from Morgan in space that completely obliterated him. Is able to regenerate quickly from Stargirl’s blasts.

Toxic Vomit

Speaking of toxic waste, yeah things getting gross- You see, Clayface has a complex digestive system that was designed to process food rapidly and when he ate the food containment he was capable of expelling material so toxic, it was designated as hazardous material. Disgusting but effective-

Absorption

In Batman: Gotham After Midnight, Clayface was able to eat people which would add to his size and therefore add to his power. For a while, it wasn’t really used as an ability to make him grow big, but a primary method of Clayface has always been to absorb or eat people in his stomach, sometimes in more gruesome manners to digest them, or to shoot them back out like a projectile. In more recent times however, Clayface has returned to absorbing people into his body, with them likely being dissolved in his clay body. He’s even been shown using his absorption to suck the fluids and moisture out of a persons’ body, killing them instantly. And sometimes with these abilities he uses them to kidnap people like he does with Charles Brown aka Kite Man. With his ability he can force people to do things like when he made one of Bane’s men shoot the other.

Power Copying

Clayface is capable of copying a person’s powerset down to a genetic level. According to further clarification from Batman, all he needs is to simply gain a DNA sample or a single hair to fully become that person, fully becoming that person. He is implied to be capable of using it on the Weather Wizard, implying he can copy entire power sets, or powers from inanimate objects like minerals or other types of clay. He can also mimic the skills of others, such as matching Stephanie Brown in hand-to-hand combat briefly. One of Clayface’s weirdest showings of this power is when he absorbed Wonder Woman he gained access to her godly powers.

Corrosive Touch

After modifying himself with the abilities of Clayface's 3 and 4, Basil became the Ultimate Clayface. After gaining these powers he became able to attack with a lethal, corrosive touch. He's able to dissolve human Flesh and clothing, he's even able to dissolve the Batsuit. He’s also capable of “turning up the juice” and making his lethal touch even more lethal, to the point he’d turn both Batman and Looker into puddles. The lethal touch is also capable of corriding through through the ground, dirt and stone. Clayface 3 (where the powers came from), was capable of completely dissolving people into shapeless puddles of protoplasm in seconds. And with it he can melt an entire gas station.

A son of Clayface 3 and 4 known as Cassius, has shown to be able to dissolve glass with a single touch, and has shown the dangerous powers to dissolve things telepathically, such as a whole car, a car’s door, people, and was even able to dissolve an entire gas station telepathically and since Basil has all the powers from the mud pack, he should be capable of doing the same. After some time his corrosive touch and piezoelectricity’s heat has become passive, making anyone who touches him get painfully burned. Speaking of Piezoelectricity-

Piezoelectricity

After falling into the center of the earth whilst being burnt alive, Clayface somehow absorbed the quartz in the area and gained Piezoelectric powers. Don’t ask- Anyhow his new powers has some interesting properties, of course with electric powers he’s capable of electrocuting people, he’s capable of sending of projectiles of electricity capable of even hurting and burning batman, the Piezoelectricity also has shown to rupture Freeze’s suit, He can ignite own body on fire, He can infuse his attacks with the Piezoelectricity, The power also has heat properties, this helps him removing one of his big weakness; ice, as he was capable of easily breaking free from it thanks to his new power, and by sending enough heat into the ground, he’s capable of making all the rubble fuse together, he used this too completely incapacitated batman making unable to move or breath while also crushing him only breaking free thanks to Mr. Freeze’s ego and accidentally freeing. The power is also extremely powerful as shown to really hurt Batman and capable of one shotting civilians.

Size Manipulation

Clayface can alter his size to grow as big or small as he needs too. The range in size for small is primarily for fitting through small spaces, and he can grow bigger then the Batmobile, become an entire room, grow big enough to cover half a building, and was able to absorb the entire Mud Room, a room of hundreds of gallons of excess waste that allowed Clayface to begin growing in size, nearly reaching the size of most Gotham City buildings, becoming a mudslide that can overtake the streets and can even blend in as a part of the city, causing destruction to a large chunk of Gotham City

Resistances:

Earth Manipulation: Clayface claims that because he is a force of nature itself, Geo-Force, a skilled manipulator of most earthly substances, cannot manipulate his body.

Poison/Acid: Resisted Poison Ivy’s kiss, which can cause paralysis

Joker Venom: In Batman Endgame we see Clayface unaffected by breathing in the venom while others have to wear heavy duty masks.

Radiation: Is fine unprotected in space.

Sandman

Sand Physiology

Thanks to the radiation mixing with his body, Marko possesses full control of his sandy body and every single one of his molecules due to merging with sand at the molecular level when he first gained his powers. What holds his entire sand body together is the Queen Bee particle, a single grain of sand containing Sandman’s brain, his consciousness even. His control is so precise, even just sitting down and not fighting he can control his sand to attack people, or he can manipulate his body Iceman-style to use sand like a slide for mobility, make sand pillars, surround truck with a small dust cloud, create streams of sand to blind others spreads himself so far out that he appears invisible, create mini sand storms or knock back the likes of Rachel Summers and Captain Britain, cling to and scale walls, blend in with the ground, and he can use his body to create sandstorms, cyclones, and tornadoes or if he wants to be a dick, just blow sand from his mouth into your face, or just vomit it on you.

Being made of sand, it’s naturally difficult to inflict lasting damage on him, thanks in part to his control over his own density and regeneration. Sandman also showed the ability to turn himself into a tornado to block people’s ability to breathe. And despite the risks of excess heat hardening his body, Sandman is able to consistently smother Human Torch’s flames. Strangely enough, he still has blood, and infusing it into others will weaken them, eventually turning them into glass statues. However due to his immortality, he lost all of his blood making unable to do that any more.

Being made out of sand has its issues, such as being unable to hold himself together in water. Even simple sprinklers weaken Sandman’s form and make him slowly lose his full form and a water hose straight up broke his entire form. Though he has taken hits from water attacks before and was fine, so it’s kinda inconsistent.

Shapeshifting

Sandman’s body can assume any shape, and Spider-Man stated that he can change his body as precisely as Mr. Fantastic, who has elasticity himself. He can wrap himself around others, stretch his neck, turn into a clamp, a wall, a steamroller, a ball, and avoid attacks by stretching or sinking. He can turn his fist into maces, barriers and granite boulders, a pile of bricks, snakes, spikes, tendrils, snow shovels, barricades, hammers, and boxing gloves

He’s capable of turning his lower body into a rock hard tanktwice, turning himself into a ball, a giant wall of sand, a giant granite block, a sand castle and even into a weird gross snake thing. For thievery, he’s turned his fingers into the exact type of keys needed to break into safes and vaults, or simply turn into a pile of sand to fool the police. Sometimes he’ll reenact how fights between him and Peter go! Or imagine himself kissing Silver Sable..?

A very impressive (and wholesome) feat that deserves a mention is when he made an entire sand castle for a girl to sleep in, complete with its own dungeon capable of restraining Spider-Man, complete with booby traps, unending corridors, buzzsaws, and of course many guards to defend the castle. All of this Sandman was capable of doing while in his sleep, reacting consciously to the movement in the castle, quite some precise shapeshifting.

Density Control

Sandman’s body can achieve any density by altering his molecules into sand particles, letting him slip through cracks or reverse the process to become rock hard. He’s used this to disperse his grains and turn paper thin to slip through attacks, doors, vents on a truck or make his fist as dense as a sledgehammer. He can increase the density of his feet, and harden himself to not be dispersed, or become a giant granite cube. Bullets can pass right through him, or be stopped cold by hardening his body, and back in his first encounter, he could make his jaw as hard as iron according to Peter

Because he can also separate his sand particles, he often uses this particular method to escape his confines, like a sonic inhibitor, which he escaped by transferring himself to the sand in a flower pot, blowing out of the window. He can easily slide through air vents. He altered his molecules’ density to easily slip out of jail, and an adhesive cable, and scattered them for a slow fall down an elevator shaft. Even Spider-Man’s webbing can’t hold Sandman, who can simply go right through the webbing. On the offensive, he’s able to get his sand through force-fields generated by Pepper Potts.

Duplication

Sandman can produce clones, often for a numbers advantage or to be in multiple places at once. The clones share his same abilities, being able to shapeshift and absorb sand to increase their strength and size. This even extends to each other, which they can use to transform into a unified, giant Sandman. He is also able to make tiny sand people, primarily for infiltration purposes.

While he usually has control over them, some of the clones may act off Sandman’s subconscious urges and do things he normally wouldn’t. But even with this problem, they’ll all come to an agreement if they have the same overall goal.

Regeneration

Being made of sand means that there isn’t a lot that can be done in terms of putting down Sandman physically. If density to make punches go through him wasn’t enough, even if someone got lucky enough to punch his lights out or blow him up, his body can simply bring itself back together, since the sand is still functionally Marko’s body, meaning the Queen Bee particle can easily bring himself back together, even if he’s just a head.

Marko can reform after being blown apart, blown up by Punisher, shattered, blasted by Annihilus, having his head slammed into the stairs and head blown up by Spider-Man, blown apart by a train, reform from being scattered by a ball of light, arm blown off by Human Torchscattered into the air by Medusa, breaking down into separate puddles of sand, and can  quickly regenerate from a puddle to grab Spider-Man. He can be scattered by missiles and still come back, and as shown in the image, come back to life despite being reduced to dust, granules even.

Even attacks like an energy blast from Bombshell aren’t enough to put him down as he quickly reforms on the spot. Even at times when his sand body is so damaged there isn’t much left of him, Sandman has shown he can regenerate from a puddle of sand. The range of Sandman’s regeneration reaches incredibly far, as he quickly recovered when he was scattered “throughout the countryside”, and after getting scattered across the city due to a giant light energy explosion, he was able to regenerate and turn giant.

Size Manipulation

In the presence of massive amounts of sand Flint can use them to increase both his power and size. He’s used this to become as large as a building, larger than an amusement park, and can merge with his clones to become larger than that. When amplified by the energies of Cressida, a power siphoning user, Sandman could grow bigger and easily overpower Captain America and Hawkeye, stating that he could bury the entire city. At his biggest, Sandman has grown over entire buildings like the Bowery, being big enough to throw boats around and put his hands over the top of buildings.

Absorption

As previously mentioned, Sandman can absorb vast amounts of sand to increase his power and size. From an entire beach to the Sahara Desert, the more sand Marko absorbs, the bigger and more powerful he gets. A lesser known ability is that he can absorb other living beings into himself as well. By absorbing some partygoers Marko was able to make his mind stronger and experience their memories. However, this also affected his personality, making him more self-absorbed, and absorbing too many people eventually overwhelmed his mind and made him explode.

Fusing

Ok ok this one’s a bit weird but bare with me. So during the time he and Hydro Man had a massive scuffle, they both fell into the storm churned East River, they slowly started to merge together into a monstrous thing called “Mud Thing” yeah real creative there Marvel. However when Sandman is fused with anything he loses himself and becomes completely mindless, becoming nothing more than someone just standing there swaying, barely attacking and just let others just attack him only retaliating when annoyed or when he just becomes King Kong, trying to get a lover. While he does get stronger in this form, knocking Peter out with a single flick, he doesn’t really try to harm anyone, only wanting to be with the one he truly loves and fumes are capable of dissolving the moisture that was keeping the monster together, breaking him apart and effectively killing him

Immortality

When the Sandman of Earth-51838 began attacking Earth-616 Sandman and his memories, his body began to wither away due to the future Sandman’s influence, making it so his consciousness took over Earth-616 Sandman’s body. Sandman’s physical body did indeed die, but he lived on as sand, now being able to move his consciousness throughout his body of sand, even being able to grant his level of sand control to a whole other body. Through this, he also learned of the ability to give sand control to other people like Spider-Man, despite Peter obviously not having sand manipulation. Sandman, through sand has the ability to live forever, and although it is implied he sought out a way to undo his immortality, there hasn’t been any clarification if he ever found that answer.

Snow Manipulation

So one time bro just became a snowman, and then proceeded to make an entire front lawn of snowmen…go off I guess?

Resistances:

Radiation: Sandman got his powers from radiation, thus was unaffected by Hazmat’s radiation blasts.

Biological Manipulation: Sandman overpowered the lock placed on his genetic structure, and he tanked a sonic disruptor gun that could “vibrate his sand into atoms”

Acids: His sand body is ‘virtually insoluble’ except for hydrofluoric acid

Forms

Clayface

None notable.

Sandman

Glass Form

In the presence of sufficient heat or electricity, Flint’s body will solidify into glass. While his body is more fragile and easily shattered, he can reform himself out of the broken shards and fire them as projectiles.

Scaling

Clayface

Batman

The Dark Knight himself, Clayface is often considered to be too dangerous for Batman to take on one on one. In physical fights, Batman is most of the time outclassed, being overpowered physically many times

Batman Rogues Gallery

When stacking Clayface up to Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals, it's hard to really say who can match Clayface in physical might, and many have tried and failed, like Catwoman, Mr. Freeze and even Ivy, who needed a gimmick to defeat Clayface.

The Bat Family

From Robins to Batgirls, Clayface has no shortage of encounters with the Bat Family, such as fighting Stephanie Brown or overwhelming Azrael, Clayface should naturally upscale the members of the Bat Family due to his super strength, speed, and durability.

The Mud Pack

Being the “Ultimate Clayface”, Basil should naturally scale to his fellow Mud Pack members, such as Sondra Fuller (Lady Clayface), Preston Payne (Exoskeleton Clayface), and Cassius Payne (Clayface III). Matt Hagen unfortunately is not a part of the Mud Pack (in fact, Karlo tried to bring him back to life after his death and failed) but Karlo should still scale to him anyway.

Sandman

Spider-Man

Easily one of Spider-Man’s strongest villains to date, Sandman has shown time and time again his ability to put the hurt on Spider-Man, fighting him to a standstill, taking hits from him, and has nearly killed him by breaking his ribs. He also fought other web-slingers like Spider-Gwen.

Spider-Man Rogues Gallery

When it comes to the rogues gallery of the web-slinger, Sandman is by far one of the strongest, and when fighting for the right to kill Spider-Man, he’s certainly the one to beat at times, having fought Rhino, Doctor Octopus, and defeated Black Cat. Even the stronger foes such as symbiotes like Venom, the Sandman have fought, confident in his ability to defeat him with Peter, not really taking him seriously, which is backed up from physically dominating him

Weaknesses

Clayface

As noted before, a massive weakness in being Clayface is the longer he is Clayface, the more murderous and more dangerous he becomes to those around him, being almost mentally unstable, although at times he has proven to remain still conscious enough to explain himself and be capable of rational thought. Clayface is also very vulnerable to both fire and ice; intense enough flame can melt him down enough that it takes far longer to regenerate then normal, and ice can stop him in his tracks, freezing off his limbs when attacking or leaving him frozen as a statue from powerful enough ice, such as Superman’s freeze breath or Batgirl freezing him with a combo of goop and water, or even people like Mr. Freeze on accident

Even though his regeneration can allow him to recover from most injuries or physical abuse, in certain situations enough repeated attacks can render him unconscious or throw him off-balance, especially by using the environment against him, or in cases where the Bat family just has devices to take him out, namely explosives. Mental attacks can also do some damage to him, like when Batman manipulated his thoughts and made him think he’d been dreaming. Clayface has also been shown to be vulnerable to gas attacks to a certain degree. He's also not very resistant to heat, not open flame but just open heat, like when Wally West running around him turned him into a statue

Sandman

Sandman is also vulnerable to most elements that can cause severe problems for his sand body. Water or rain will soften Sandman’s form altogether, and while he can survive inside it, he finds it harder to maintain his shape and is easily dispersed, which can take months to reform. Sufficient enough heat can render him molten, turn him to quartz, or solidify his body into a living glass statue, whether from Electro or something as simple as an electric current, though at times Sandman has tanked stray electric attacks not meant to harm his physiology. His body is also susceptible to being frozen solid. Certain other materials like Trapster’s paralysis paste can leave him helpless for several minutes, and cement will easily contain him, and acid is another type of hot substance that Sandman is vulnerable to.

Constant physical punishment can keep him so off balance that he can’t maintain his form, and if his sand molecules are contained elsewhere he can’t fully escape areas. He also isn’t too good at imitation on his own, needing lip synching practiced over a voice recorder to make his disguises work.

Spider-Man has also stated that Sandman, no matter how much sand he has, he will always lack creativity or imagination in how to utilize all of it. His sand body also houses the Queen Bee particle, and isolating it from the rest of the sand body can make it harder for Sandman to regenerate, although destroying it would prove useless provided he can simple transfer his consciousness to the next grain due to his immortality.

Before The Verdicts

Herald Clayface?

The idea of Clayface being a threat to someone like the Justice League or more is something that is brought up from time to time, since physically there isn’t really much someone like Batman can do to bring down Clayface. But does that mean he can stand up to the likes of Superman or Wonder Woman? Yeah no, not really. Almost (keyword here) every feat where Clayface encounters someone you classify as a ‘herald’ (which already as a word has lost so much meaning, so just think of someone who scales to anything universal in attack potency and above) has some context behind it:

Wonder Woman (1987) #160: Clayface could knock around Wonder Woman and fly

Response: Wonder Woman’s Pre-Flashpoint origins included her being made from sacred clay by her mother, which naturally allowed Clayface to absorb Diana’s powerset due to her physiology, flying and being strong enough to hurl her across a city with an attack, and all other feats such as being called as powerful as Zeus or nearly killing Donna Troy were due to Clayface being amped by the sacred clay. Although this detail in Diana’s origins wasn’t retconned in Post-Flashpoint, Clayface and Diana never really interacted at all.

Supergirl (2005) #33: Clayface knocks Supergirl back and tanks hits from her

Response: Well for starters, that’s not Basil Karlo, that’s Cassius Payne. But also, Supergirl is holding back, as evidenced by the fact that she claims she let Clayface get a few hits in, before just taking Clayface to space to incapacitate him, which works and Clayface can’t even fight back.

Infinite Crisis #2: Clayface hurts Power Girl
Response: Again, that’s Cassius…and Power Girl is punted into the street and gets up without any sign of injury, and Payne gets taken out by her heat vision in the very next panel.

The Outsiders (2009) #22: Clayface tanks hits from Geo-Force, and beat up Metamorpho
Response: This ones a little bit weirder. Clayface did grow stronger due to absorbing some kids and miners, which is an established way he gets stronger. While Geo-Force is pretty soundly a herald tier, shattering Kyle Rayner’s constructs and hurting Kalibak, it’s also clear Geo-Force didn’t come there to kill or fight Clayface at all, asking him to come quietly and locate the man he kidnapped, and Geo-Force normally uses geokinesis to fight, but finds he can’t manipulate Clayface, so they resort to a creative way to beat Clayface; superheating his core to 1,000 degree Fahrenheit, which takes him out of the fight. It was a fight that focused more on their physiology and powers than any sort of ‘herald’ showings, using a more creative plan started with Metamorpho blasting through his chest as the same clay properties Clayface is

Batgirl (2011) #34: Clayface survives a starbolt from Starfire

Response: It very clearly dissipated him enough to bring him down, as he didn’t show up for the rest of the comic, although due to the nature and small scale of the attack, one can infer that he probably regenerated from this later.

Justice League (2012) #9: Survives getting heated up by Superman’s heat vision

Response: Superman has ample amounts of statements stating to both hold back against his enemies and hold back subconsciously, especially when on Earth. Plus, the heat vision more or less served as a warning that he would get seriously hurt if he didn’t cooperate, and it weakened him enough to allow Batman to just bring him down physically in the rest of the panel.

Justice League (2013) #11: Clayface is able to suffocate Martian Manhunter

Response: Escaping the Firestorm Matrix left Martian Manhunter severely weakened when leaving, having to recover from his psyche blending with Stargirls, hence why Clayface was able to mess with him. Then Stargirl, who is far weaker than J’onn, put down Clayface with a large burst of energy a couple pages later.

It is worth noting especially from the Wonder Woman comic that Clayface could have herald potential with his power absorption, as evidenced by his implication that he could absorb Weather Wizard’s powers, and the sacred clay is in fact a substance that Clayface can absorb, so could he potentially absorb other minerals or substances with godlike power? Absolutely. Is he normally walking around as a herald? Not really, given he’s a Batman villain first and foremost, and most often you will see him in a setting where he is the strongest monster, beaten by creativity and some form of incapacitation, but never really able to properly contest with heavy hitters, at best able to regenerate from their attacks.

Herald Sandman?

Yeah as you’d expect, Sandman has this same problem as well. Except in this case, there’s a lot more nuance than just saying “it's wrong”, since where herald Sandman comes from more so has to do with an era of Sandman’s history at the time. However, there will be some other feats addressed.

First, there’s Sandman’s history as a Fantastic Four rogue. For a brief time, Sandman was a member of the Frightful Four, who shared a mutual hatred of the Fantastic Four, doing battle with them many times. And in those instances, Sandman showed that he was genuinely able to keep up, blasting away the F4 with sand, punching out the Thing and tanking his hits, knocking out the Human Torch in one punch, and even wearing down Invisible Woman’s shield with his attacks. So why wouldn’t Sandman scale to the heavy hitters like Ben and Johnny, or even Sue’s force-fields? It comes down to one of two things; the idea of characters getting stronger over time, overlapping with just becoming outdated when Sandman became a fully-fledged Spider-Man villain. Eventually, Sandman stopped being a Fantastic Four villain and returned to his roots as a Spider-Man villain, which in some way indicates that Sandman being able to keep up with the Fantastic Four was because they weren’t as strong at the time. And though you can pull the card of “the Thing and Human Torch aren’t really agreed upon how powerful they are”, even Sue in her early days wasn’t the beast we know that could withstand Celestial attacks, being knocked out after containing the Q-Bomb, an atomic explosion device. Fantastic Four goes as far as to support the idea of linear power growth, as shown when Sandman and Thing fight in issue #177, where Thing says that he’s grown stronger without realizing it, no-selling two attacks that initially would’ve hurt him in the past, which Reed points out himself. Nova’s comics even seem to suggest despite being an enemy of them, he was beaten pretty frequently by the Fantastic Four. Even when they fought again in the more modern age, the moment Thing started to punch Sandman, he was breaking his face, being pinned to a dumpster and clearly overwhelmed once Thing got serious. Other modern age instances prove that Sandman isn’t meant to contend with planet busters or cosmic forces, like when Hulk (Amadeus Cho) and Nova (Sam Alexander) subdue him together. Which just goes together with how Sandman was being portrayed after his days in the Frightful Four were over; for a time, even before becoming a beach or the Sahara Desert, a grounded character with powerful abilities, heavily involved with Spider-Man, the Sinister Six, as opposed to being a villain that is meant to fight the heavy lifters in Marvel’s line of heroes.

Then there’s the Hulk. Because of course Sandman fought the Hulk. In issues #113-114 and #138, Sandman has some encounters with the jolly green giant. The reason Sandman was capable of even fighting the Hulk as well as he did the first time around was because the Hulk was very tired, weakened from Bruce Banner trying to outlast the crushing pressure in his starship before he landed on Earth, and after the endeavor, Hulk was tired and wanted to sleep until Sandman attacked, and Hulk still ended up beating him in both issues. In #138, Hulk continuously no-sells Sandman’s assault, breaking his fist weapons and even punching him out despite Sandman making himself as hard as granite, being overwhelmed by Hulk in the end.

There are other feats however that have context, such as his fight with Nova, in which Nova himself said he was very weakened, likely due to the death trap he was placed in earlier in the comic that allowed him to be overwhelmed by some goons for a minute. Nova would also fall in line with being a character that has also grown in power from this encounter, as evidenced by him contesting the Silver Surfer much later down the line.

Verdict

Stats

In terms of the raw physical AP, the debate is fairly straightforward. Sandman is no doubt stronger and faster then Clayface due to the gap between DC street tiers, and Spider-Man tiers overall. Clayface scales to respectable double to triple digit kiloton values, from as low as 77.6 kiloton via Adam Strange, to as high as 653 kiloton via Black Wind, and he should reasonably be above those feats, considering how much of a powerhouse he is treated as compared to the usual street tiers, but this still pales in comparison to the Spider-Man feats Sandman can scale to, such as 316.5 megaton through Electro powering a device that could blow up New York. Speed is more even. Both Marvel and DC street heroes have nearly equal nanosecond reaction feats. Both Clayface and Sandman could strongly upscale from these values, considering Sandman can keep up with Spider-Man, who blitzed Daredevil, while Clayface was stated to be able to react to any of Gotham Girl’s attacks, and Gotham Girl can move so fast Batwoman can’t see her. Regardless, neither of the two are really about speed, so such differences really shouldn’t be able to affect the outcome too much. In conclusion, the speed is close enough to being even, with a slight edge given to Sandman, but Marko is close to 1,000 times stronger. If you really want to, you could put both characters at herald tier as equal leeway in order to equalize stats for Clayface, but not only is this tier for either of them really questionable, it ultimately won’t affect the outcome, as we’ll see later.

Arsenal & Abilities

Now, this is where things get interesting. Both are made up of sand and clay respectively, which is what makes them so hard to put down. Both can change their shape in almost any way, grow in size (Sandman’s ability to do so is superior, but in order to grow, he needs sand to be in close proximity, where as Clayface seems to be able to grow to massive sizes by absorbing any nutrients, or even through his own power at an emotional peak), turn their limbs into weapons and regenerate from almost any kind of damage. Now, regeneration is extremely important for this matchup, and despite their similar physiologies, their abilities to heal aren’t exactly the same. Clayface generally is portrayed as having more useful regeneration. Not only are clay particles significantly smaller than sand particles, but Clayface’s powers were also described as him controlling his individual molecules, and he can control any part of himself even if it’s completely separate from his body. Clayface’s clay was also described to have special healing properties, implying he can straight up grow parts of his back were they to be completely erased. That is just speculation, but the point is that in order to destroy Clayface, you need to destroy his body beyond molecular level to truly kill him. Hell, when Poison Ivy had her plants drain him of all the nutrients in his body and basically eat him, he still came back from that inexplicably. Despite the large power gap, we found no proof that Sandman can destroy someone on a molecular level. And Clayface is no stranger to being hit  by people way, way stronger than himself, like Starfire or Power Girl. And while those attacks did usually break him apart, they caused him no lasting damage he couldn’t just regenerate from. Sandman similarly can return from any physical attack Clayface can dish out, especially considering how physically superior he is to Karlo, and considering he could return from seemingly being melted, it would 100% take more effort than brute force to fully put him down. However, once we look into their other abilities, Clayface proves to simply have much more versatility and offensive options to take care of Marko. Both can absorb people to get stronger, but while for Clayface where is no limit to how stronger he can get (he has shown to be capable of absorbing herald levels of energy, such as Diana’s Sacred Clay, which made him stronger than her), if Sandman absorbs to many people, it will overwhelm his mind and make him explode. Clayface can copy the powers of others (even heralds, like the Weather Wizard) with their DNA, so if he absorbs Sandman’s soul particle, which contains his DNA (more on that later) he will copy his powers and from that point on, Marko will lose his massive stats advantage.

Overall, Clayface has superior absorption abilities. While Sandman can absorb other sand and living people, Clayface seems to be able to absorb basically anything that contains nutrients, from people, to more clay, to random minerals, which he can absorb properties from. Clayface can make more of his physiology. He can change his physical appearance, use his natural acting skills to pass off as anyone else, he has far more experience with turning into multiple people, considering he has all of Lady Clayface’s powers, he can likely fly by creating wings the same way she does. Now, all those are small things, but Clayface has more dangerous abilities that have the potential to end the fight. First of all, Preston Payne’s ability to melt people into protoplasm. While for Preston he could only do it to organic beings, both Karlo and Cassius could melt just about anything with a touch. Peter Malley could even melt things by looking at them, though it’s likely that Karlo doesn’t have the same ability. Regardless, if Karlo does melt Sandman’s soul particle, it would possibly kill Marko, considering while Marko did regenerate from being seemingly melt it, we didn’t know if he was melted as thoroughly as into protoplasm, especially since Peter clearly didn’t intend to kill him in that instance. Now, locating the soul particle would be challenging, but considering Sandman doesn’t have any reliable way to end the fight, Basil is going to have as much time to pull it off as he needs, especially since he could use his more readily available size manipulation to encompass all of Marko and then melt him. Another ability Clayface has that could work is his piezoelectricity. That he somehow got by… absorbing quartz? Huh? This sounds extremely stupid, but it happened. And Sandman has historically shown a great weakness to electricity and both heat, as a surplus of either can reduce him to a fairly helpless glass form, which Clayface can just absorb. And as for Sandman’s immortality? It’s… confusing. After the alternate Sandman shenanigans, Marko lost control of his flesh and blood body, and became permanently sand, but as far as we know, only his own sand, or rather, the sand connected to his soul particle. His consciousness exists across all of his body, but it can’t, as far as we know, just possess some sand far away from him without getting the soul grain there. So, if he gets fully melted or transmuted into glass, there’s nothing suggesting he could just astrally project his soul to the sahara desert, or whatever, if he even stayed alive and conscious. And supposing he could do that, this kind of logic is really flimsy? What if there’s no sand nearby? How close does it need to be for him to somehow transfer his consciousness to it? And if he needed to go really far to rearrange his body, that would basically count as self BFR, since he was forced to retreat somewhere from where he can’t resume the battle anytime soon. Note that this is all giving him a benefit of the doubt, assuming he won’t just die if Basil melts or transmutes him.

Tertiary Factors

Now, this is much more straightforward, and both hold their own advantages here. Marko has a scientific background and is more mentally stable, making him more book smart. However, Clayface has shown much better martial art skill, his acting prowess helped him in his career many times, and he’s overall much more ruthless in how he utilizes his powers. Marko is much more chill, in general, as he’s not a ruthless murderer like Clayface is often portrayed. Both can be subject to emotional breakdowns, but for Marko it’s usually something involving his personal life, while Clayface is often being a hammy theatrical villain, just like the ones he played when he was an actor. Honestly, those factors are fairly unimportant in this fight. Both can utilize their powers creatively and to the fullest potential. What are Clayface's martial arts? I doubt knowing judo will help much against a living sand tornado. This category is fairly even.

Conclusion

“Your power is useless. I am a force of nature unto myself.”

Advantages:

  • Can’t be put down permanently by Sandman in any way

  • More skilled

  • Superior imitation abilities

  • Equally as creative in shapeshifting as Sandman

  • More offensive abilities

  • Similar regeneration

  • Piezoelectricity exploits Sandman’s very specific weakness to electricity, allowing Sandman to be more easily absorbed as glass and dissolved, leaving his conscious without a body

  • Power absorption can potentially bridge the stat gap and heighten the ability gap

  • His presence in the Harley Quinn show

  • Is James Gunn’s chair

  • His boss fight in Batman: Arkham City is AWESOME

Disadvantages:

  • Far weaker and slower

  • More mentally unstable

  • Inferior size growing abilities

  • Has no way of physically putting down Sandman either

  • Not as smart as Sandman

  • Cannot withstand the Ivy’s rizz

  • Something something lack of mainstream DC media

  • Is bad at cosplay

“The Sandman is still more powerful than any of you creeps!”

Advantages:

  • Takes the stat trinity in spades

  • Similar regeneration

  • Equally as creative in shape-shifting as Clayface

  • More mentally stable

  • Clayface has very few ways to physically put Sandman down…

  • More intelligent overall

  • Can grow bigger then Clayface

Disadvantages:

  • Can’t put Clayface down permanently in any way

  • Less skilled

  • Less offensive abilities himself

  • Slightly less skilled

  • …Until Clayface uses his electric abilities, which Sandman is vulnerable to

  • His consciousness trying to find another body of sand away from the fight counts as a win for Clayface

  • Cannot resist having his powers absorbed

  • Clayface’s acidic skin would prevent drying out Clayface or absorbing him

  • Doesn’t like working with women

  • Vacuum cleaners. Seriously. It actually left him traumatized

Even if the Sandman is the stronger and more durable opponent, Marko’s superior physical strength simply can’t do much to defeat Clayface, considering his broken molecular regen, and how he easily healed even from people much stronger than the Sandman. Stats are of very little importance in this fight. You really can’t put either of those down with brute force unless you like, fully atomizing their bodies with a kamehameha, which neither of them can really do. Marko’s problems arise from the fact that offensively, there’s really not much he can do. He’s very strong, but against Clayface it won’t do him any good, and his absorption, the only thing that could potentially defeat Clayface that he has, not only has never shown to be able to affect the kind of special clay Karlo is made of, but is also much inferior to the same type of absorption that Clayface demonstrates. Really, you can just look at their comics and see how they are defeated. For Clayface, nearly every single time he is defeated, it’s in an ultra specific way you can’t really replicate without preparing for it. One time, the looker’s psychic powers amplified his corrosive power, which sent him flying to the earth’s core. Another, Ivy drained him off all his nutrients with his plants (which he still came back from). The only time he seemingly died was when Batwoman fired a special bullet at him which took away his power to telekinetically manipulate his molecules, and he still came back from that. The only reason it even took him long to come back was because the bullet took disabled his powers. Pulling his molecules back together wasn’t a problem at all. Point being, Marko can’t do anything that could be reasonably capable of taking Clayface out.

Now, if you look at Marko’s comics, it will be basically the same thing, with the difference being that because Marko is much more chill than Clayface, such drastic measures to defeat him like overheating his core were rarely required. Unfortunately, Clayface possesses several specific abilities that could likely bypass even Marko’s borderline invulnerability. He has electric powers, which is exactly what turned Marko into his useless glass form, we also have few reasons to believe Marko can recover from being melted into something as small as protoplasm. And if Clayface manages to get his… um… clay on the soul particle and absorbs it, it would not only grant him all of Marko’s strength and powers, but also potentially incapacitate Marko by making him a part of Clayface. Again, finding the specific particle that has Marko’s soul in it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, but considering Sandman has absolutely no reasonable way to even briefly incapacitate Clayface, Basil has all the time he needs. He doesn't need to look for the specific particle. He can just encompass all of Sandman and try to melt him, since it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that maybe if you totally melt or absorb the entire sand body, it could take your opponent down. This isn’t an easy match to decide, with how weird their powers are and how hard both are to put down, but ultimately, and quite surprisingly, only Clayface has what it takes to end this hard-fought shapeshifting battle.

The winner is Clayface.
