Bang's Blogs: Leatherface vs Hillbilly

“Life is better with chainsaws.” -Amazon.com

Bubba Sawyer, the Leatherface of the Sawyer Residence.

Max Thompson, the Hillbilly of the Coldwind Farm.

You might find blood splattered in the wheat fields, and the animals don’t look too fed, and don’t mistake the open doors for a humble and welcoming home, or you’ll be greeted by a revving chainsaw engine and some loud grunts. Disfigured and abused by their families, these killers turned their farms into slaughterhouses, defending their land from all intruders that dared step foot beyond the fence. Will the Hillbilly be the victim of the Coldwind Chainsaw Massacre, or will Leatherface be Dead by Daylight? Don’t lose your limbs in this DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Start…

The biggest elephant in the room we’ll have to address is Dead by Daylight. For Hillbilly, this is his main and only source material, meaning all of his in-game items, lore, perks, add-ons, and backstory from the tomes and archives will all be considered, as it is all within the confines of DbD. Consequently however, Leatherface is also in Dead by Daylight. So the big question really is will Leatherface similarly be given DbD content and lore? We’ve decided to go with no. While the canon of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is somewhat messy already, Dead by Daylight is not really canon to it, and giving it to Bubba would just mean it's a match that is equal in stats, and equal in a large variety of their toolkit and abilities, which would be uninteresting and rob Hillbilly of what's unique to him, so we are only giving DbD to Hillbilly.

Leatherface won’t be without his extensive content however. We will still be giving him all of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, which includes the first three films, the two reboots in 1995 and 2003, its 2006 prequel, Texas Chainsaw 3D, which is a direct sequel to the 1974 movie, and the 2017 and 2022 movies, both prequels to the 1974 movie as well. We will also account for the TCSM novelization, as well as the various comics and the two video games, the Atari game and Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Game.

Background

Leatherface

“The saw? The saw is family.”

On August 18th 1974, the lives of Sally Hardesty, her brother Franklin and their 3 friends would be changed forever.. For the worst. After hearing that their grandfather's grave had been robbed, Sally and Franklin set out to investigate. Soon coming in contact with the Sawyer Family, a sadistic family of cannibalistic killers. With the family muscle being the “sweet’ and “simple” Jedidiah “Bubba” Sawyer, code-named Leatherface by locals. Frightened for himself and his family’s safety, Leatherface would hunt down these intruders, slaughtering them like cattle, one by one. He is the family’s protector, and caretaker. His family is everything to him. They are security and safety. He will do anything to protect their desire for human flesh.

Try as he might, Bubba failed them. The girl, Sally, managed to escape him. Riding off in the back of a pick-up truck, she laughed, rubbing his failure in his face. Consumed with rage and grief, Leatherface in that moment vowed to never fail his family again. Soon police would come, take his family, take his security. That they did. In a shootout incited by the town Mayor, each member of the Sawyer family was killed, leaving Leatherface as the sole survivor, with Verna Sawyer. Over the next fifty years they stayed hidden, capturing unsuspecting victims and staying just under the town’s nose. In Verna’s final days, she left the Carson Mansion to their last surviving descendant and tasked her with being Jedidiah’s new caretaker. After they cut down the Mayor that led the mass killing of the Sawyers in 1974, Jedidiah would live out the rest of his days in the mansion’s wine cellar, waiting for family to call on him once again.

Until the next goddamn reboot or new timeline.

Hillbilly

“A most terrible man to behold. His physique is all twisted and disfigured as of by some awful accident. He carries a deadly and cruel chainsaw which he wields with devastating violence, seemingly imbuing him with a superhuman speed for a while. His advantage is also a weakness as the loud noise can give away his position. So I have tried to heighten my sense of sound. Honing in on any sound that is not stemming from nature.”

On Coldwind Farm, there was a man named boy. Born to wealthy landowner parents Evelyn and Max Thompson Sr., the boy was not born like other children. His face was disfigured, and as a result his parents called him ‘boy’, and his parents treated him as a savage that should be shunned away from society. They locked him in a cellar with brick walls, feeding him through a single hole in the wall as he was shackled. Instead of raising him, the parents made the boy do things that brought them pleasure and made them laugh, even bringing the sheriff, Chief to see the boy in the fields, killing farm animals for the family for days on end all the while he treated their animals with love and care, while he got nothing. Nothing except ridicule and occasional watching of the TV, where he saw Chief, growing to resent him for not protecting him from his terrible parents.

One day when killing cows, Chief came over again with his team of policemen. Boy had had enough of this life of slaughter, neglect, and pain. He could hear Pa shout at him constantly, about how he had hours to go, and how the pigs had names and he didn’t. It didn’t take long before the boy snapped. With a chainsaw in hand, he gave into his blood boiling fury and turned to his parents, killing his father with his chainsaw along with Chief’s men. But the boy ran out of the barn and back to the Thompson house, determined to finish the job by killing Ma. He brutally beat his mother, demanding to know what his name is and why she treated him the way he did. Why was his life different from the other children on the TV? But all he saw in her eyes was the same disgust she always saw in him, before ripping them out and killing her.

The Chief was now on his tail, and boy was now on the run. At first he was scared, listening to the Chief yelling at him and taunting him as he searched through the trees. And he knew that more deputies would come his way, but he was tired of running. He was ready for all of them, for he knew they were supposed to protect him from their parents, but all they did was stand by and laugh. Now it was his turn to laugh. One by one, he slaughtered Chief’s deputies, destroying their brains and torturing them the way he had been all those years while they did nothing, until Chief finally found him, along with his search dogs. But they all fell one by one until Chief was left, feeling the same way his father did when his father laughed at him all those years, and now the boy was the one laughing as his deputies had their heads split open. Chief himself didn’t fare any better, dying by his own knife as he watched the boy rip his dogs apart. But he knew more deputies would close in, and fled the scene before he could finish the job.

Returning to the property of Coldwind Farm, he still wanted to know one more thing. He remembered the secret rooms in the basement where Pa hid his money, and where his TV was, opting to hide there for as long as he needed to to avoid being arrested or captured. But deep down, he wanted to know what his name was, someone who he could’ve been, for now, he was a monster; one not born, but created. But he was never found. To pass the time, he would roam the cornfields and slaughter the animals that were treated better than him, and eventually when the property was visited by the authorities after some time, and the bodies of Evelyn and Max Thompson were never found, but they certainly found bodies of disemboweled pigs and chicken all over the land. The Coldwind Farm was quickly settled afterwards, splitting up the land to be sold off. But there was no buyer for the farmhouse. Perhaps it was the sound of the chainsaw you could hear throughout those hot summer nights, before it disappeared into a thick black fog. The man named boy was no more; instead, a chainsaw-revving killer only known by the survivors as The Hillbilly.

Experience & Skill

Leatherface

Leatherface has been raised as a very clever killer and butcher due to listening to his family all his life. This has lent itself to be very useful for Bubba more than you would think, making him very resourceful in many ways when it comes to revving his chainsaw and being on the hunt. Being a butcher has made him familiar with the human body in some fashion, being able to prevent his uncle from bleeding out and even patching his legs after cutting them off. He’s also picked up other useful skills around the farmhouse, such as being able to tinker with cars and can mess with electronics to make them more difficult for victims to disable.

When it comes to killing, Leatherface on a few occasions has used his environment to his advantage. He is capable of taking down foes who are much more skilled and armed than him, such as professional wrestlers, cops, multiple sheriffs, and has even engaged with a former Texas Ranger in a Chainsaw fight. He “whooped” a man's ass and cut off his legs and in his younger years he was actually quite capable in fist fights. And don’t mistake his less than ideal method of flailing his chainsaw around, he’s more capable with it then that. He once fought a man with one arm in the reboot timeline and could throw his chainsaw to disarm opponents

Hillbilly

All his life, the Hillbilly has only known violence, being molded into a chainsaw-wielding killer and seemingly nothing more. After the Coldwind Farm killings, the Hillbilly lived on his own, showing his adeptness in wilderness survival by making everything on his own, being able to build shelters, light fires, and craft tools, such as the one time he built a metallic frame for a pyre in order to build his own fireworks. He’s shown to be capable of living in all kinds of terrains on his own, and is a capable hunter when it comes to getting his own food, a master of the slaughter.

Equipment

Leatherface

Chainsaws

Specifically a Poulan 245A Chainsaw and various others. The chainsaw is Leatherface’s most iconic and trusty weapon that he’s emotionally attached to. He's quite used to using it against.. well everything that's in his way, including barbed wire, coffins, doors, fences, carspeople. It’s even made for good defense against shotgun blasts. In the video game, revving it up allows him to regenerate stamina quicker.

Golden Chainsaw

Why? Won’t the gold just get covered in blood? Could still function even when submerged in water.

Cattle Hammer

Probably Bubba’s second most iconic weapon. The Sledge makes for a powerful tool when killing his victims in a single blow to the head.

Meat Cleaver

Used for cleaving off meat and human flesh.

Hatchet

Sometimes it's good to bury the hatchet…in someone's skull.

Sledge Hammer

A weapon primarily used for blunt trauma to the head.

Bolt Stunner

Farm tool meant for firing a bolt to an animal’s head to put it down, proves to be just as useful on humans.

Meat Hooks

Whether carried on hand or in the house, Leatherface has utilized meat hooks to kill and torture victims. Also Dead by Daylight reference.

Meat Tenderizer

Used to make meat softer and easier to chew…and also to kill Daryl!

Miniature Saw

Used to scrape off the skin and faces of his victims.

Bonesaw

Miniature razor bonesaw if he needs a quick slicing.

Rock Salt

While not used for killing, rock salt has its place in torture, taking the phrase “rub salt into the wound” very literally. Bubba used it to torture a man who had his leg severed off, causing immense irritation of the nerves and damaging the wound and tissue.

Bear Traps

Primarily put in forest areas, used on Ryan before Leatherface killed him.

Knives

Used for stabbing and slashing.

Box Cutter

Sometimes cutting people open can get messy, so a smaller blade oughta help with that!

Hook Hand Replacement

When Leatherface lost his hand, he taped it up with a hook as a replacement.

The Leather Truck

Yes… this is real. In the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, it’s revealed that Bubba at some point learned to drive and rolls around in a personalized pick-up truck covered in human skin. Somehow, the skin is durable enough to tank assault rifle fire easily.

Medicine Bottles

These are used by Victims to restore health after enduring severe wounds and beatings. While Lock Picks and the Medicine in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Game are only usable by Survivors, this is just gameplay as these items just belong to the Sawyers and are strewn about their home.

Misc. Killing Tools

Bone Scrapers- Self-explanatory

Slaughter Irons- Used for poultry

Scapules- Scrapes muscles

Sony Walkman- Because what's a killing without a little old school retro rock?

Lock Picks- Used to…pick locks

Hillbilly

Chainsaw

The Hillbilly’s main weapon, used throughout his life to slaughter the animals on the farm, along with many unfortunate law enforcers. When he entered the trials of the Entity, his chainsaw was enhanced and allowed him to move at supernatural speeds towards survivors, before downing them with a single hit.

Hammer

The other weapon in his hand, a hammer used for giving survivors a good whack to the skull.

Farmhouse Tools

When he’s not revving his chainsaw, odds are he’s got a weapon in his other hand, and Coldwind Farm had plenty of tools for him to give a good beating to any unfortunate victim. He’s got your standard sledge and maul hammers, rusty shovels, broken down shotguns, and even the leg of a cow! At times, he will create his own weapons from pre-existing ones, such as a hammer with butcher knives strapped to them, or a car’s headlight as a mallet.

Pickaxes

When living in the mountains, the Hillbilly’s weapons were primarily pickaxes, used to hack at stone and also hack at the skulls of rabbits and raccoons for food and warmth.

Scythe

A tool for agriculture and also a tool for slicing someone's head off.

Club

A spiked club perfect for turning skulls into mush. Sometimes he even makes them out of trees.

Abilities

Leatherface

Inhuman Endurance

Handling chainsaws means handling their bloody repercussions more often than not. Leatherface takes consistently brutal wounds but never runs out of steam, even if he gets tuckered out, there’s a perk in the game that allows him to recover his stamina very quickly. As far as injuries, he survived his own saw slicing into his leg, continued to fight even with a chainsaw through his gut, kept chasing even with a missing arm or a knife in his back and stitches his victims faces to his own regularly.

Stealth

Like any good 70s Slasher, Bubba is ridiculously skilled at stalking and sneaking up on his victims. He once managed to hide from the police inside a cow carcass with 2 other people to avoid police dogs.

Teleportation

I don’t know how else to explain this lmao.

Animal Manipulation

He is the chicken whisperer. No further questions.

Blood Manipulation

In Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Game, the family can feed Grampa blood to make him stronger and improve the effectiveness of his abilities. The same likely applies for Bubba. The Sawyers are also capable of harvesting blood from victims simply by doing damage and perks within the game help with this.

Aura Perception

For a short amount of time, Leatherface can see the outlines of various objects, family and victims. Via certain perks, even some actions will reveal a target's aura to him or strengthen this ability.

Statistics Amplification

Via equipping several Perks within the Video Game, Bubba can make his chainsaw and physical attacks stronger.

Lightning Summoning

Bubba can summon lightning bolts in broad daylight. What the fuck.

Resistances

Hillbilly

Power: Chainsaw

"A hulking and deadly Chainsaw of terrifying strength. Grinds through flesh, bone, and soul. Once revved up, it sends its user into a violent frenzy."

Special Locomotion: Chainsaw Sprint

When pressing the Power button, the Hillbilly charges up his chainsaw for a couple of seconds, before entering into a Chainsaw Sprint, increasing his movement speed from 4.6 m/s to 10.12 m/s, allowing him to sprint at survivors like a freight train, having to very precisely turn to avoid running into objects, which can break him out of the sprint, making his maneuverability low. When hitting a survivor, it deals double damage, which instantly downs them to the ground.

Special State: Overdrive

Revving the chainsaw and sprinting with it automatically charges the Chainsaw Meter, which when reached allows a full 20 seconds of movement speed at 13 m/s, making him even faster while reducing the cooldown of the chainsaw time by -10%

The Hillbilly’s Unique Perks

As a playable killer in Dead by Daylight, the Hillbilly has three unique perks that take up three slots, but is capable of using and learning other perks, allowing her to have a fourth slot open to use during the trials. These perks can be leveled up with the Prestige system, granting access to these perks for all other killers on the roster and for their higher tier versions to spawn in the Bloodweb. Prestiging the Hillbilly’s perks three times will give them Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III status for both the Hillbilly and other killers. His unique perks are:

Enduring: You are resilient to pain. Reduces Pallet Stun duration by 40/45/50%.

Lightborn: Unlike other beasts of The Fog, you have adapted to light.

  • The Auras of Survivors attempting to blind you by any means are revealed to you for 6/8/10 seconds.

  • Grants immunity from being blinded from Flashlights.

Tinkerer: Whenever a Generator is repaired to 70%, you benefit from the following effects:

  • Triggers a Loud Noise Notification for that Generator, revealing its location.

  • Grants the Undetectable Status Effect for the next 12/14/16 seconds.

Misc. Killer Perks

“I feel confident that I can inculcate my awareness of the Bloodweb to the others that are trapped here with me. Maybe they can unlock their inner strength with my help.” -Benedict Baker

In Dead by Daylight, there exists a metaphysical realm that can be accessed in dreams and sleep by both the Survivors and the Killers. In-game, the Bloodweb is treated as the place where the two parties can access all of their perks, add-ons, and offerings, and due to the leveling system, you are able to access perks specifically from other Survivors/Killers the more you level up on the Bloodweb. If the Hillbilly were to access the Bloodweb at the 50th level, his perks are now accessible to other Killers for instance. As such, the Hillbilly should have access to the other Killer’s perks, however some of them do require help from the Entity, such as ones with Dull or Hex Totems, so certain perks cannot be accounted for due to being considered outside help by Death Battle’s own rules. There are also 100+ perks that can be mentioned, so we will try our best to list the most important ones. If you are curious about any other perks, see the Dead by Daylight wiki for more. Here are some important perks:

Brutal Strength: “Your great strength allows you to shred through your prey's defenses.”

  • Increases the Action speed of breaking Pallets and Breakable Walls, and damaging Generators by 10/15/20%.

Franklin’s Demise (bro stole Bubba’s perk): Your vicious Basic Attacks make Survivors drop their Items on impact:

  • Causes dropped Items to slowly lose their Charges over 150/120/90 seconds.

  • The Auras of dropped Items are revealed to you within 32 meters.

    • The level of depletion is indicated by the color of the Aura, ranging from white to red as the timer elapses.

Mindbreaker: All Survivors repairing a Generator suffer from the following afflictions:

  • Incurs the Blindness and Exhausted Status Effects for the duration of the Repair action.

  • If a Survivor was already suffering from Exhausted prior to Mindbreaker affecting them, the Status Effect's timer will be paused and not recover for the duration of the Repair action.

  • Both Status Effects linger for another 3/4/5 seconds after a Survivor stops repairing.

Predator: Your acute tracking ability allows you to find lost prey more easily.

  • When a Survivor loses you in a chase, their Aura is revealed to you for 6 seconds.

  • Predator has a cool-down of 60/50/40 seconds.

Sloppy Butcher: Wounds inflicted from Basic Attacks cause his victim to suffer from the Hemorrhage and Mangled Status Effects. Bleeding frequency is increased by 100% and healing regression caused by Hemorrhage is increased by 25%. Hemorrhage causes the victim to lose 7% of healing progress per second if they are not being healed. Mangled slows down healing speed by 20%.

Unrelenting: Reduces cooldown of missed attacks by 30%.

Chainsaw Add-Ons

The Hillbilly’s chainsaw can be altered or adjusted with 20 Add-Ons available. They are single use only in the trials, and used to enhance the killer in various ways, able to equip two at once in her Loadout. They come in the form of an object from the Hillbilly’s past in order to boost his power, with some of them being able to stack onto each other if they boost the same power. Here are all of the Hillbilly’s add-ons, in order from Common to Iridescent:

Counterweight: Adds weight to the base, for stability.

  • Reduces the initial Turn rate of the Chainsaw during a Chainsaw Sprint by -70%.

Cracker Primer Bulb: A button that clears air from the fuel lines. This machine needs to be fed.

  • Increases the Charge rate of the Overdrive Meter by +15%.

  • Survivors hit with the Chainsaw are only damaged for a single Health State.

Dad’s Boots:  A pair of trusty boots, pulled from the corpse of Max Thompson Senior.

  • Extends the duration of Overdrive by +15%.

Greased Throttle: A lubricated trigger. One twitch of the finger brings the Chainsaw back to life.

  • Reduces the Cool-down time after using the Chainsaw by -5%, when not in Overdrive.

Off-Brand Motor Oil: Affordable oil that can be used to lubricate noisy chains.

  • Increases the Charge rate of the Overdrive Meter by +15%.

  • Increases the Decay delay for the Overdrive Meter by +20%.

Low Kickback Chains: A specialized chain that reduces the likelihood of kickback.

  • Reduces the Cool-down time after hitting an obstacle during a Chainsaw Sprint by -15%.

  • Reduces the Dissipation speed of the Overdrive Meter when not using the Chainsaw by -30%.

The Thompson’s Mix: A special oily substance used in the lubrication of all machinery concocted by the Thompsons themselves.

  • Reduces the Cool-down time after using the Chainsaw by -10%, when not in Overdrive.

Apex Muffler: A masterfully crafted chainsaw muffler that outperforms all others.

  • Silences the Chainsaw for all Survivors outside of the Terror Radius.

Filthy Slippers: Max sometimes struggled to hear his mother's footfalls.

  • Gain the Undetectable Status Effect until you stop sprinting after maintaining a Chainsaw Sprint for at least 2 seconds.

High-Speed Idler Screw:  A loosened screw will bring more power to the Chainsaw.

  • Increases the Decay delay for the Overdrive Meter by +30%.

LoPro Chains: Light chains that decrease the weight of the Chainsaw, allowing for greater maneuverability.

  • Allows you to continue the Chainsaw Sprint after breaking a Pallet or Breakable Wall with the Chainsaw.

  • Survivors hit with the Chainsaw within 5 seconds of breaking a Pallet or a Breakable Wall are only damaged for a single Health State.

Iridescent Engravings: Engravings found on the Chainsaw body representing the dark beast that lives in The Fog. Fills the user with determination.

  • Increases your Movement speed during a Chainsaw Sprint by +20%.

Tuned Carburettor: Despite being caked in dirt and oil, this carburettor has been well adjusted.

  • Increases the Charge speed of the Chainsaw by +20%.

  • Reduces your Movement speed to 4.4 m/s.

Memento Moris

Bypassing the sacrificial process to the Entity, the Memento Mori Offering allows the Hillbilly to kill the Survivors by hand, as a finishing move when a Survivor is on their final Hook State. The Hillbilly’s Mori is simple, pinning a survivor to the ground before revving his chainsaw and sending it down the survivor’s torso until they are killed.

Resistances

Light Manipulation: Via the Lightborn perk, the Hillbilly can resist being blinded by a flashlight or being stunned by a flashbang or firecrackers.

Pain: The Enduring perk makes you ‘resilient to pain’.

Forms

Leatherface

None of note.

Hillbilly

Blighted Hillbilly

After being experimented on and given the Blight Serum by the Blight, the Hillbilly turns into a nightmarish monster, oozing of orange Pustula fluids all across his body. This transformation makes the Hillbilly even more deranged, and seemingly gives him a boost in physical might, as implied by the Blighted Trapper when he broke out of chains that were holding him in his normal form, although the form is a temporary one.

Scaling

Leatherface

The Sawyer Family

Suffice to say, Bubba is undoubtedly the physically strongest of his family, in part due to his usage of a chainsaw and large stature, meaning any feats done by his family members are things he should upscale too.

The Victims

If plot armor wasn’t there to save them, these guys and gals would be dead. Leatherface is easily stronger than the survivors due to being able to keep up with and match them with or without his chainsaw.

Hillbilly

The Killers

The Hillbilly and his chainsaw should let him hang with the other killers in the trials, having one of the few weapons capable of bringing down a survivor in one hit.

The Survivors

The prey of the trials, the survivors are people from all across the world put into these trials, and now they are navigating the fog trying to find a way out, showing traits from their past as they work together. The Hillbilly hunts the survivors down and can bring them down in one to two hits, so he should easily upscale all of their feats.

Weaknesses

Leatherface

Leatherface wasn’t taught too much growing up other than killing, making him a child in an adult body. As a result, he is mentally impaired and only really guided by the words of his family, and his killings are often shown to be self-defense due to being taught to fear the outside world. And while Bubs is very talented with the chainsaw, it’s far from a perfect weapon. They obviously rely on gasoline, so consistently using isn’t ideal, along with it just naturally being a noisy and bulky choice of weapon, making stealth difficult.

Hillbilly

While the Hillbilly is smarter then given credit for, he still falls short in some areas. He lacks a proper education and doesn’t understand most concepts beyond revving his chainsaw and survivability, making him lack true fighting experience or anything that involves using tactics or planning. He will stop moving if his chainsaw collides with any objects including humans, though this is mitigated with the LoPro Chains add-on, but his overdrive mechanic means he has to be extra precise not to hit anything due to the uncontrollable amount of speed and even less control with turning. As a killer of the Entity, the red stain also makes knowing the Hillbilly’s location easy, though this can be circumvented with various perks that remove the terror radius.

Before The Verdicts

What About Leatherface’s Crossover With Jason Voorhees?

The Jason Voorhees that Leatherface fought is quite different from the usual version of the character, having an almost entirely different back story. Scaling should be kept to what he does within their crossover. You may be wondering why this version of Jason isn’t at least mentioned in the scaling, and the answer to that is its really just one feat, being able to kick down and punch through metal doors. It is also worth noting that attempting to scale Leatherface to stronger versions of Jason would backfire, as you can easily do the same with the Hillbilly to crossovers as well. Such as Nemesis, Xenomorph, Ash Williams, and…Leatherface.

Can The Entity Bring Hillbilly Back To Life?

One of the abilities of the Entity in Dead by Daylight is being able to resurrect survivors killed in the Trials, bringing them back to life without memory of what happened, something that applies to the killers in the event that they are somehow killed. A big question in itself is how quick is this resurrection process? There is quite a bit of evidence to suggest the resurrection process is quite instantaneous. When the survivors are killed in the trials in-game, they are instantly taken back to the campfire after the game is over. While this could be overlooked as a game mechanic or aesthetic stuff, the campfire in Dead by Daylight has lore implications of its own, being a safe haven for the survivors in the Fog.

Now there is an obvious glaring issue. We’ve never seen the Entity resurrect a killer. Mainly since we’ve never seen a killer die in the lore, but if the Entity can resurrect people in general, it shouldn’t be too hard to imagine it can resurrect its killers if it needs to. You can argue that they are just important for the Entity to feed off of, especially someone like the Hillbilly due to his years of physical and emotional abuse, but the second issue presented is the Entity would very much be an outside factor, something that isn’t allowed in normal Death Battle rules, much like certain perks cannot be accounted for due to being specific for the Trials such as various Hex perks.

Verdict

Stats

While it may not seem like it, stats are pretty important pertaining to this debate. On paper, their chainsaws can break down doors, shred through any material, and cut through people easily, so it wouldn’t seem too inconsequential, but when stacked up to their highest feats they scale to and things they do, there tends to lean a victor. Leatherface’s best feats would be things like stabbing down walls or scaling to Jason Voorhees, who in their crossover could easily dismantle metal doors, putting him around wall level by nature of how physically imposing he is. The Hillbilly on the other hand would upscale the Observer, the narrators of the Tome and one of the survivors in the Trials. The Observer survived an explosion from a large egg on top of the Macmillan Estate water tower, which reached up to 0.0916 tons of TNT, which is a small building level explosion. Given the Hillbilly can down survivors from one hit with his chainsaw or further increase this with other perks with basic melee attacks, it would make sense that Hillbilly would upscale this kind of feat due to the killers naturally being superior to the survivors. So strength and durability would go to the Hillbilly.

For speed, it’s a lot closer. Up close, both have reacted to gunfire, with Bubba blocking a shotgun blast and Hillbilly outpacing Chief’s barrage of bullets, and would scale to people with similar gunfire reaction speeds, making them relative in that regard. On-foot, both of them with their chainsaws reach inhuman speeds making it hard to outrun them. Leatherface has caught up to a truck on-foot, with trucks on average being capable of moving up to 55-70 mph on the freeway. The Hillbilly’s chainsaw sprint lets him move across the maps of the Trials with ease, reaching a top speed of 156 mph with the Engravings add-on, which is the equivalent of a speeding motor vehicle. So while both would be even in reaction speeds, the Hillbilly moves much faster on-foot with his chainsaw then Leatherface does.

Arsenal/Abilities

These two butcherers have used every kind of tool you can think of found in the ol’ shed, and they have a plethora of weapons. Leatherface has a plethora of chainsaws, meat cleavers, medical tools, and hooks. Hillbilly has broken down shotguns, hammers, pickaxes, a scythe, a club, and even a cow’s leg. Leatherface’s arsenal would likely be more versatile here due to things like the bolt stunner, which can be good for a decent range advantage, and rock salts would be a very dangerous option at slowing down the Hillbilly due to how painful it would make his injuries, and his truck would only further add to the battlefield control advantage he would have. The Hillbilly’s weapons aside from the chainsaw are often just other melee weapons used up close, which both have enough of anyways. So for slightly better versatility, Bubba is going to be having the better arsenal.

Abilities on the other hand are a different story. Both have a few abilities that should very easily cancel out. For instance, stealth is off the table for these two. Leatherface’s aura perception means even with the LoPro Chains add-on, the Hillbilly will have trouble getting the drop on Bubba, and likewise, the Predator perk would mean that if Leatherface somehow fled the chase or escaped line of sight, he wouldn’t go very far due to the aura reading capabilities granted to Hillbilly for six seconds. Another thing that cancels out is amplifications. Leatherface’s perks in the TCSM game would give him means to stack up the damage his chainsaw would do, and the blood given to grandpa to make him stronger would easily apply to Bubba as well, something he can play off of if he injures Hillbilly. The Hillbilly on the other hand has Brutal Strength and Enduring, making him much stronger and more resilient to pain, so both would cancel out in their options to amp themselves.

When it comes to other abilities, there are a lot of things to consider. For starters, Leatherface’s inhuman endurance grants him far greater survivability then Hillbilly. While the Hillbilly was still able to kill a dog and cop after being shot in the leg, Leatherface has continued running at people without limbs and frequently survives his chainsaw slicing through his own body, being able to keep fighting in spite of this. With Leatherface’s abilities all being covered, what tricks up the Hillbilly’s sleeve would be useful to combat Bubba? Many of the perks in Dead by Daylight fall under outside help due to being tied to Hex Totems, and many others are simply not useful due to being related to sacrificial hooks or generators, all three things found in the Trials. So by process of elimination, there is one perk that would be considered very dangerous here; Franklin’s Demise. By using a basic attack, the Hillbilly can cause the survivor to drop whatever is in their hand on impact, such as a medkit or flashlight. Furthermore, items slowly lose their charge over a duration of 90 seconds. With the Hillbilly’s noticeable advantage in strength, a perk like this would be overwhelming for Leatherface to face head-on. A stronger opponent by a noticeable gap would mean Bubba would be overwhelmed, which opens Leatherface up to having Franklin’s Demise work on his own chainsaw. While Bubs would certainly have back-ups with many tools on hand, none of his arsenal is his bread and butter the way the chainsaw is, which he is emotionally attached to. And something like a small buzzsaw is nothing against the Hillbilly’s supernatural chainsaw, which would be able to finish the job on Leatherface if he found an opening to cut him down. Leatherface’s survivability would only carry him so far before being cut down beyond repair. It should be worth noting that theoretically, Leatherface’s chainsaw, despite Hillbilly’s better durability, would be able to cut down the Hillbilly if the opportunity came about due to the nature of how a chainsaw is meant to be used. But at the end of the day, one is applying more energy behind their chainsaw, especially with the chainsaw sprint/overdrive mechanic, something that would quickly overwhelm Leatherface.

Ultimately, this kind of scenario is just more likely to happen than the Leatherface’s, which would require more work and effort to put in against someone far stronger than him. Leatherface would’ve needed to get closer in stats to put his experience to use, and tactics like blood harvesting, rock salts, or even summoning lightning won’t matter if he himself can’t find an opening, as none of his abilities really offer one when some simply cancel out. The Hillbilly’s opening is lined up for him way more clearly, and with overwhelming strength, Franklin’s Demise would rob Leatherface of his chainsaw and make it harder to compete in close quarters combat without getting chopped down. And while you could argue Leatherface’s array of chainsaws would make it tougher, worst case scenario is the Hillbilly plays the long game and waits for the perks cooldown and repeats the process until all his chainsaws are drained, something he can easily do with his chainsaw sprints.

Tertiary Factors

Finally, we come to Tertiary factors, definitely one of the closer categories. Both Max and Bubba are actually decently smart, being able to tinker with electronics and more importantly here, having a wide knowledge of killing. But ultimately there is a difference between murder and actual combat. We have seen plenty of cases of Bubba directly engaging in fist fights and even full on chainsaw brawls, something Max has never done. Bubba also just has more cases of thinking outside of the box to get the drop on a victim, like using underground tunnels for a sneak attack or throwing his chainsaw like a ninja star to disarm his opponent. While Max has taken down his fair share of skilled targets, like police officers, demon hunters or martial artists, these can hardly be argued as Max actually fighting them, as it’s really just him hunting them down and killing them off, without much resistance to speak of.

The Sawyers in general just get up to a lot of weird things throughout the several timelines we’ve looked into here. Like being a part of a goddamn government conspiracy or just having their entire town unwilling to fight back against them. Mostly due to Bubba being their main weapon. It should be kept in mind that this is sort of a double edged sword, as Bubba RARELY acts without his family or their command, while Max, obviously has done most of his own work by himself, giving him more solo experience over Bubba. But overall, Leatherface should just be more experienced, simply just by being active for decades into his old age, while Max is likely hardly into his 20s. It also helps that, while very questionable most of the time, The Sawyer family did care about Bubba and treated him as a member of the family, being actually taught things. While Max for most of his life was kept in a basement and only taken out to do yard work or take care of livestock.

It is rather clear who ends with the better end of the stick when it comes to Tertiary advantages, though not without some shortcomings, Leatherface is just more experienced than Max in most regards. Having in general more life experience and actual showings of skill in combat, while Max has more solo experience in his short time, Leatherface has just simply done more. Obviously due to being an iconic character with an entire franchise of media to look at.

Conclusion

Advantages:

  • Far higher Lifting Strength

  • Certain perks in TCSM the Game and Blood Harvesting could help shrink the ap gap

  • Far higher endurance

  • Greater versatility

  • More experienced and higher skill

  • Better range with bolt stunner and truck

  • Rock Salt getting into any wounds would cause Max immense pain

  • Can potentially score a win with a Lightning strike

  • Healing options

  • Has a loving family (Sorta)

  • I’d try the chili ngl - Grimes

Disadvantages:

  • Physically weaker ap, even with amps

  • Slightly slower

  • Franklin’s Demise would be detrimental to his chainsaw

Advantages:

  • Stronger and faster

  • More vicious

  • Certain perks like Brutal Strength would further widen the strength gap

  • Enduring would help shrug off any pain

  • Certain perks counter stealth, like Predator

  • Franklin’s Demise would hard counter Leatherface’s chainsaw

  • Best nodder

Disadvantages:

  • Far less direct combat experience

  • Lacks ranged options

  • Hasn’t fought anyone with the versatility or goofy shit Bubba has

  • Gets reworked more then Fast & Furious makes movies

Ultimately, while there are a lot of pieces to look at here, surprisingly it’s Leatherface who comes up short. Despite it being agreed that Bubba holds a majority of advantages here, one thing stuck out and that’s Strength. While there are still a couple arguments to be made if you focus on some of Bubba’s nicher abilities like summoning Lightning or gaining strength through blood consumption, unfortunately none of this would matter if he was just incapable of dealing significant damage or being a great deal faster than The Hillbilly. Max upscaling Small Building level is just something out of all of the Texas Chainsaw Franchise was shockingly absent and while both can be argued as bullet timers, Max is scaling to much faster firing speeds than Bubba. Things like Bubba’s lightning, endurance and a goddamn monster truck would definitely catch Max off guard but at the end of the day this is going to end in a physical brawl, which is where poor Bubba can’t hope to stand a chance against Max Thompson, the Hillbilly.

Final Tally

Leatherface (0)- Bubba noooooooooooo

Hillbilly (2)- ThiccGrimes, BangJang96

One More Thing!

If you’re wondering what this sleeper agent blog is doing here, ThiccGrimes and I did indeed hash this out in a couple of weeks since he wanted to research Leatherface and I had DbD deepdive research in the back pocket, so we decided to team up for an awesome Halloween blog. Duo blogs like these do not fall under any schedule since they are a lot more freelance, so it may seem weird seeing this uploaded with our current schedule, but this won’t be the first time these could come out of the blue, such as my upcoming collabs with Rina Antiqua and Twice. Still though, keep an eye out for Atom Eve vs Gwen Tennyson, and Ellen Ripley vs Sarah Connors this Halloween!
