Bang's Blogs: Rick Grimes vs Joel Miller vs Bill Overbeck

“When there’s no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth.” - George A. Romero

Rick Grimes, the Ruthless Deputy of The Walking Dead.

Joel Miller, the Lawless Protector of The Last of Us.

Bill Overbeck, the One Man Army of Left 4 Dead.

The zombie apocalypse is one of the oldest mass hysteria fears we as humans can think of. The world and our way of life perishing because of a terrible outbreak, the population dwindling, and the city streets crumbling. Few can say they can survive the zombie apocalypse, but these three lone and hardened survivors have lived long enough to fight against the hordes and be heroes for a broken world. These men went through hell and back but ultimately found something worth fighting for in the cruel world of the apocalypse, willing to do anything to protect the ones they love. But only one can survive in today’s royale. Who will be the last man walking and who will be left for dead? The sheriff, the veteran, or the smuggler? Only one can survive the apocalypse of DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Start…

A bit of a warning is probably necessary here, there will of course be HEAVY spoilers discussed in this blog, so if you're thinking about watching/playing something here.. you should probably just skip this one and come back later (Or don’t, it doesn't matter we already got the view). This is gonna be long as hell already, but we need to go over what exactly we’re using here.

In regards to Rick Grimes we will be focusing on the Skybound comics and AMC tv show universes, any side media will also be discussed such as the Woodbury novels, Telltale Games, Road to Survival, Survival Instinct, Robert Kirkman’s letter hacks, DVD commentaries, interviews etc. While the AMC universe does eventually split off sorta drastically story wise from the comics, Robert Kirkman is still involved with its development and its writing. The show is also just too iconic to Rick’s character to completely ignore, so we are tackling him as a soft composite. We will be ignoring any crossover or blatantly non-canon materials though, so no, we will not being mentioning fucking Funko Fusion or some shit.

For Bill Overbeck, of course we’re using the Left 4 Dead series and the canon sacrifice comics. We made sure to look into things such as developer commentaries, interviews and the Japan exclusive arcade game. The Last Stand update is being used as well, while it was “made by the community for the community”, it was officially released by Valve and heavily added to the base game. We also decided to look into the various Mutations game modes and the Cold Stream campaign in order to be thorough. Dead by Daylight will be included in this too, yes it is a crossover but we will later discuss why we thought it was valid to use over the other games that Valve puts these characters into instead of just making another damn game. So if you’re expecting Resident Evil, Zombie Army, Cabin in the Woods or whatever to come up.. You’re reading the wrong blog, bud.

Lastly, Joel Miller will be handled similarly to the others. We’ll be using The Last of Us parts one/two, comic books and the tv show (Yes, including season 2). This also includes interviews with developers and actors, the ridiculous amount of remasters, companion podcasts, multiplayer and the No Return game mode to ensure no stones are left unturned. So in short, Joel will also be soft composited. While some may argue against using the show, the original game developers and writers, like Neil Druckman and Bruce Straley were heavily involved with its creation, using it as a chance to show things they couldn’t with the game. Things like Diablo and the tabletop rpg are not being included for obvious reasons.

Background

Rick Grimes

We… are The Walking Dead.

Rick Grimes was just your average Georgia cop. Spending his time during his less than eventful job hanging out with his good friend Shane and coming home to a loving family. Until one day an escaped convict made his way into Rick’s neck of the woods. In the heat of a firefight, Rick was struck in the chest and soon slipped into a deep coma.  Almost two months later, he finally woke up and the world around him wasn't the same as he left it, it was now overtaken by the walking dead. After setting out to find his family, Rick found a man, Morgan, who explained to him what was going on. Despite the world having changed, Rick was still a police officer and still saw the world as black and white. Good and bad. Human and undead. But Rick knew that if he wanted to see his family again, he would have to fight for it.

After making his way through Atlanta and coming close to death, he was saved by a young man named: Glenn. Who eventually led Rick back to his camp and luckily, back to his family and to an entire group of people desperate for direction. Rick then stepped up as the leader of this camp of survivors and slowly, through his trails he started to see the world as grey. After being forced to kill his best friend and mourning the death of his wife, Rick realised that humans were more dangerous than the dead and the world isn't civilized anymore. So he needed to start acting like it. Rick will do whatever it takes to survive and protect his son, if anyone tried to get in his way, they wouldn't be for long. This mindset brought Rick and his new found family to try and build new lives for themselves, together taking down whatever threat tried to get in the way of their goals.

Through the years, war after war and bringing multiple communities together, Rick realised that the world they once had could be remade and that they didn’t need to survive anymore, they could go back to living. Rick would go on to build something that he was proud of in the memory of all of those he lost along the way. At the end of Rick's journey, no matter which canon you focus on it always ends in martyrdom. Whether it's through self sacrifice or assassination, Rick’s story would go on to inspire the new world and put humanity on a straight path towards reclaiming it. With his son making sure that his Father's legacy lived on.

Joel Miller

Endure and Survive.

It had been twenty years since Joel Miller lost his daughter to the military during the start of the cordyceps outbreak. Joel spent these years cold and depressed, turning to a life of questionable morals as a smuggler with his brother, Tommy. He and his brother eventually went their separate ways, Tommy tired of their life and his brother. Joel would spend some time alone before meeting a woman named Tess, becoming partners in smuggling. This would eventually lead them to Marlene, who had a job for them. Smuggling a 14 year old girl, Ellie, to a group called the fireflies held up in the nearby capitol building. Marlene was not telling them why she was so important, but Joel wasn't getting paid to ask questions, just to deliver cargo. While trying this, they got into a scuffle with some soldiers, leading them to find out that Ellie was actually infected the entire time, but revealed that she was actually immune. Skeptical at first, Joel took her to the capitol building only to find that the fireflies had been killed, and Tess was bitten. She would convince Joel that the mission was worth continuing as it could be humanity's last hope and reluctantly, Joel accepted. His entire life had been ripped from the ground by this job and now he had to travel across the country with this, sorta irritating little girl. Through their long journey Joel started to pick up on similarities between Ellie and his late daughter. As much as he tried to deny it, Joel was getting attached and he couldn't comprehend this feeling.

After a few months on the road, they came to Wyoming in Jackson County and found Tommy. Joel would then go on to try and convince his brother to take Ellie off his hands and an argument ensued, only being cut off by a convenient bandit attack. Tommy then agreed but Ellie had run off. After tracking her down and having a heated argument, Joel had a change of heart and decided to take her to the Fireflies himself. They traveled for weeks, with Joel enduring a life threatening wound and them having to fight a group of cannibals. They finally found the Firefly’s hideout and Joel was met with the truth. Ellie was going to be used to make a cure, at the cost of her own life. Refusing to lose another daughter and throwing the future of humanity aside, Joel killed everyone in the hideout, including the doctor who was beginning to operate on Ellie. Once she woke up, Joel had lied to her, telling her that her immunity essentially meant nothing and she couldn't produce a cure. Eventually, years down the road, Ellie would learn the truth and shut Joel out of her life. They would later try to rekindle their relationship, but soon for not. While outside Jackson, Joel would be caught by a group led by the daughter of the doctor he had killed to save Ellie. Who procedes to torture and beat him nearly to death, just before Ellie had walked in. She was pinned to the ground and forced to watch as Joel opened his eyes to look at her as he was swiftly finished off. Joel's death would go on to fuel Ellie’s quest for vengeance but his memory would cause her to forgive him in the end and let go of her hatred.

Bill Overbeck

Bein’ brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It means you're scared as hell, and then you pick up the shotgun anyway.

He was just in his early twenties when he was drafted into the Vietnam War. Taking this chance to prove himself to his country, William “Bill” Overbeck became a well respected and valuable soldier to the US military. After serving two tours and getting a handful of medals, it took a knee full of shrapnel to take him out of action. With an honorable discharge from service, Bill would spend his days at home working dead end jobs, feeling lost and unfamiliar in his own home for decades. He hated his life, he couldn't quite put his finger on it but it was missing something, something for him to fight. One day, after going in for a routine knee surgery, Bill was mere seconds from being put under as the doctors around him started to change. They had suddenly become bloodthirsty monsters and had begun ripping each other apart, soon turning their rage towards Bill. He ordered his eyes to stay open and powered through the sedatives, taking the doctors apart as he made his way out of the hospital into the Philadelphia streets. Armed with nothing but a hack saw and his bare ass, Bill fought his way back home and put on his old uniform. In a weird way, Bill saw this green flu as a blessing, it gave him purpose again and a new squad to take it on with. A young aspiring movie director, an obnoxious biker and an easygoing optimist. They weren’t perfect, but they were damn fine soldiers and soon, Bill became a father figure to them all.

Their journey would eventually lead them to being captured by the US military, labeling them as “carriers”. It was revealed to them that they’ve been infected the entire time and have been killing all of those who’ve been helping them along the way unknowingly. The same thing that Bill had once proudly served under had then tried to lock them up like animals and kill them. With a stroke of luck, they escaped but Bill came out with a new mindset. Protect his own, even if he needs to sacrifice others to do it. They then formed a plan to get a boat and sail off to the Keys, full of habitable islands away from all the dead and military. But things didn’t go exactly as planned, the bridge they had made an escape to had gotten stuck mid-lift and attracted a massive horde of infected. Someone had to go power its generator and Bill dove in without hesitation. Ultimately sacrificing himself to protect his new family and give them the safe life they deserved.

Experience & Skill

Rick Grimes

Through his years in a zombie apocalypse, the way he saw things made him a natural leader to bring humanity back from extinction. Rick showed off his skills as a skilled negotiator, gifted leader and influencer, sometimes even through force. He has often rallied his group together during harsh times and motivated them to keep fighting. He’s also shown a knack for deception. The Governor has said Rick is a good liar and he successfully manipulated Shane and Negan into seeing things his way, convincing to the point of leaving themselves wide open. Rick has led his group through two wars, against the Saviors and the Whisperers, has thwarted a community mutanty and has more than proven himself to be an insanely skilled tactician. He has stealthily coordinated a rescue mission and fought out of the Governor's camp and led raids against Savior compounds. Rick's talent for forming battle plans has even impressed Abraham, a former Army Sergeant and was considered a major threat to the CRM, an entire post apocalyptic military.

Not that shocking, given Rick’s expertise in combat as well. Rick was a cop for around 10 years, making him skilled at disarming, grappling, observing, interrogating, using firearms and potentially various forms of martial arts. He was skilled enough to shoot the fingers off a man from a considerable distance away and trained Andrea, who could do much of the same within the comics universe. He’s beaten multiple people at once in a quickdraw and It should also be noted that Rick usually fires his Colt Python at a 45 degree angle. Which is really impractical in real life but doesn't seem to affect his aim whatsoever, it just looks cool. While Rick will fight dirty if he needs to, Rick was taken in by the CRM and was heavily trained. After years of being pestered to become a Soldier, Rick enlisted and was trained in martial arts and flight simulations for around 8 years. All the more helpful since Rick is a “Natural Predator” and has survived several decades of a zombie apocalypse, becoming incredibly observant and is a skilled improviser, showing in several instances that he's adept at using his surroundings to his advantage. Rick is also an experienced hunter, being able to track blood for miles and is skilled at improvising weapons/crafting them as well as knowing how to set up traps. He can disarm complicated explosives and knows how to hotwire cars. He’s also incredibly stealthy, able to blend into the shadows like fucking Batman and can sneak into heavily guarded bases. After surviving thirteen years of an apocalypse, Rick has more than earned the title of the man who remade the world.

Joel Miller

Joel has survived the apocalypse for 20 years as a smuggler, taking on just about any job as long as it paid well enough. Taking down all sorts of fucked up infected monsters and his journey has led to him picking up many skills, such as scavenging weapons from his environment and stealth, being able to sneak pass/stealth skill soldiers and infected alike, even those with heightened senses. He can sniff out bullshit from a mile away and on top of this, despite having no confirmed formal training, Joel still showcases talent with a vast variety of firearms and explosives, often using them to set up traps for incoming enemies. He’s skilled enough to craft an innumerable amount of items scavenged from around the world, plus has upgraded his guns to be even more lethal. Unsurprisingly, Joel is a massive threat in a fight, regularly able to fight infected who are ferocious enough to kill patrols/fedra even while hung up by his ankle and has beat the hell out of FEDRA (the military) agents himself constantly. He’s also just insanely brutal. He’s tortured men with a knife, threatening to pop their knee caps off with it and has jammed arrows into people’s throats. Notoriously, Joel even took down an entire base of Fireflies by himself, who are a heavily trained militia group, with no plan whatsoever. Even doing this again in the alternate universe of the HBO show, showing off just how cunning and deadly Joel can be.

The tv show universe keeps many of Joel’s key traits in tact, such as his talent for stealth, torture and his knack for setting traps. With Bill saying Joel is one of the few people smart enough to avoid his complex traps and it also shows off Joel’s skill with firearms, despite him saying he sucks at shooting, he sure had no problem scoring back to back headshots on fast moving infected with a sniper rifle and with another, was able to hit specific lettering on a testing dummy. When there’s a job to be done, god help anyone who gets in Joel Miller’s way.

He’s also incredibly intelligent in general. Just by reading training manuals he’s able to increase the vitality of an object, increase the radius of a projectile, and improve the timeframe of projectiles. He’s also even able to deduce how to accomplish a task given by the training manual even when the page is ripped or stained.

Bill Overbeck

As you may know, Bill is far from a stranger to engaging in combat. He served two tours in the Vietnam War in the US Army 1st Special Forces Unit and received many medals for his skill and bravery. Bill was seemingly a Green Beret, heavily trained in several fields of war. Unconventional Warfare, Foreign International Defense, Direct Action and Special Reconnaissance, as well as various martial arts, like Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Boxing and Muay Thai. Making Bill not only a force to be reckoned with on his own, but exceedingly so with a coordinated unit. It took a knee full from shrapnel to take Bill out of action and with an honorable discharge, Bill still craved combat, unsatisfied with a normal life for decades. So when a new war started between the last of humanity and the infected, Bill proved himself to be a valuable fighter and leader for a ragtag group of unlikely survivors

Though Bill may be on the older side, the Left 4 Dead developers made it a point for him to still be portrayed as physically able in combat and is just as capable as his younger teammates in the face of seemingly endless hordes of infected. Bill is skilled with just about any firearm he comes across, able to score shots in vital areas and score headshots in hectic situations but he’s also showcased skills in other areas. Able to patch his teammates up from life threatening wounds and knows how to make his own medicine from the environment, such as from mushrooms and herbs. He’s shown a knack with mechanics, having repaired generators, figured out how to drive a train on the fly and has been taught by Louis on how to make pipe bombs from scratch. Bill's leadership is bar none, having led his group against impossible odds like a rogue military, harsh storms and countless monstrous mutated infected. Leaving Bill with nothing he hasn't seen before and ultimately prepared for the horrors of the Entity's realm. Battling its insane killers and protecting his fellow survivors from being sacrificed to an omnipotent being harvesting their very own hope. Taking on threats from sadistic clowns, groups of bloodthirsty teens and poltergeists to the more horrific dream demons, chainsaw massacres and boogeymen. The war never ends for Overbeck, but he wouldn't have it any other way.

Equipment

Rick Grimes

Colt Python Revolver

Rick's most iconic weapon and his main go-to side-arm. Typically it holds up to six shots, but in a deleted scene, Rick could fire it well over a dozen times before reloading. In a couple mobile games, it grants Rick a few bonuses such as increased crits, higher defense and luck.

MK Mark 23 Cal. 45 Auto

This is actually Rick’s most recurring gun of choice in the comics universe, as the Colt Python is original to the show. When he lent it to Morgan, it was shown to be able to break chains

Beretta 92FS

Being a former police officer, it’s of little shock that Rick has used the standard issued beretta.

Glocks

He's whipped out a glock 17 and 19 on a few occasions in the place of his Colt Python. They’re reliable and light weight.

Walther P22

Used to finally finish off Pete Anderson, securing his spot as Alexandria's leader and protector.

Suppressed H&K Mark 23

A powerful handgun and Rick’s preferred for stealth. He used it to get the drop on Gareth’s group of sadistic cannibals.

Pump Action Shotgun

It's said that a shotgun in the Novels could punch through steel and “practically vaporize” half a wagon.

Remington 700 VLS

A typical hunting rifle that Rick and Dale shared in earlier seasons of the show. In Overkill's TWD, sniper bullets could break chains.

Remington Model Seven CDL

Remingtons are always a reliable choice. It’s the rifle in his bag that was used during his war against the saviors.

Remington 700 BDL

A hunting rifle looted from Morgan’s personal stash, which he had looted from Rick’s old police station.

Smith & Wesson SW1911SC "E-Series”

Used by Rick in his first encounter with a cannibal camp, it's a small side arm known for its precision and accuracy with a mag capacity of 7, 8.

Uzi

Looted off of a dude he just choked to death. It’s a staple in any gun wielder’s kit. It also has a shoulder strap to make it easier to carry around.

Colt MK IV Series 70

A side arm that Rick found buried at the prison in season 3. We never actually see him use it, but he did pocket it.

12 Gauge Double Barrel

A classic firearm in any zombie killer's arsenal. In the TellTale Games, double barrels could pulverize heads.

Colt Detective Special

A small but powerful snub nosed revolver. Rick has used this in the show and comics universe.

Defensive Revolver

Rick really really likes revolvers… This one is especially large though, and grants him special buffs. It's one of the few weapons exclusive to him in RtS.

Desert Eagle

Rick can get this from Road to Survival. In the novels, they’re stated by Bob Stokey (a former Military Medic) to be able to penetrate tank armor.

Remington 870 Wingmaster

Better known as “Hershel's Infinite Ammo Shotgun”. A remington in the novels could “practically vaporize” a skull. It can be shot 17 times without reloading.

Mossberg 500

Formerly Shane’s but since Rick killed his ass, it’s his now. It's standard issue for Atlanta Police and packs a hell of a punch.

IMI Galil AR

According to Wikipedia, this thing was developed during a 6-day war. It comes with an impressive range of 410 meters and muzzle velocity 900 m/s.

Norinco Type 56

Rick’s iconic assault rifle. It’s lightweight and a great choice for hectic situations, like escaping a community of cannibals!

Steyr SSG 69

A sniper rifle equipped with a silencer. Rick used its scope to get a better view of his surroundings.

Heckler & Koch HK94A2

A semi-auto rifle. It fires a popular 9mm luger cartridge, it has a notably manageable recoil.

Heckler & Koch MP5A2

A submachine gun designed in the 1960s, it's known for its easy handling and maintenance.

Winchester Model 70

An iconic sporting rifle, been trusted by gunmen for over 80s to date as it is known for its accuracy.

Colt M4A1

Specially designed for lightweight mobility, speed of target acquisition and heavy firepower, it’s a solid choice for any fire fight.

Assault Rifle

Given to him from Daryl in the VR game, likely the strongest firearm in that game.

Lever Action Rifle

Rick has used multiple rifles through his story in both canons. Giving him a leg up on others when it comes to range.

SMG

A small but reliable sub machine gun. In the VR game it’s pretty useful in situations needing crowd control.

Lever Action Shotgun

A modifiable makeshift shotgun, it holds multiple rounds and is strong enough to rip through walkers like paper.

Crossbow

In Onslaught, Rick can carry around Daryl’s iconic crossbow. Daryl's bolts could pin Walkers to walls and it has been upgraded to have steel cables, a laser sight, copper arrowheads and a rapid firing rate.

Burst Pistol

A small, sorta weak automatic pistol that can be used to break chains and dispatch zombies all the same.

Heavy Pistol

An extremely strong choice of firearm. It has armor piercing rounds and can go through multiple enemies.

CRM Scoped Assault Rifle

A standard machine gun issued to CRM Soldiers. It’s a modified M4A1, with a trident mounted to the muzzle.

Tippmann Cronus

It’s a high powered bolt gun issued from the CRM. It’s there I guess, but it’s better than nothing.

Rick's Gun Bags

Among the weapons seen in the bag in Season 2 of the show are the Mossberg 500 with high-capacity magazine tube, Remington 870 Wingmaster, Harrington & Richardson Pardner Pump Compact, Remington 700 BDL and a Glock 17 pistol. In Season 5 Rick has another bag that he tells Gareth has a “AK-47, .44 Magnum, Automatic Weapons, a night scope and a compound bow.

Mandy's Red Machete

This thing has an entire webisode dedicated to it. It has been upgraded to cut through armor, stun enemies, increase loot drops and grant Rick “blood lust”.

Billhook Machete

One of many of the weapons in Road to Survival that belong to Rick, although this one can be used by other characters. It’s a tool used for cleaving through shrubbery and trees but obviously, that's not all Rick uses it for.

Hatchet

Undoubtedly Rick’s most iconic melee weapon in the show and comics. He’s used it for anything from direct combat to even crude surgery.  He also got a hatchet from the CRM.

Axe

Like any good zombie slayer, Rick has used the ever useful fire axe. Great for close range fights and has some solid reach.

Baseball Bat

A basic bashing weapon. Rick can get some from games but notably he used it in the beginning of the show and on this comic cover Rick has a spiked bat.

Police Baton

Rick’s a cop, so he’s trained on how to properly use these things. In the comics, the group looted a bunch from the prison’s armory.

Shovel

Rick has never really used a shovel in a fight in the comics or show, but he can in Road to Survival and Onslaught.

Wrench

In the canon VR game Rick uses a few wrenches as close ranged weapons, good for smashing in skulls.

Gerber Gear

A foldable and portable sack that contains various bladed weapons, axes, machetes, etc.

Various Knives

A pocket knife, knuckle knife and Rick can also use a golden knuckle knife in the VR game.

Meat Cleaver

It’s not just a regular utensil for chopping carrots, Rick and the gang can modify it to deal “leech damage”, giving ‘em a solid healing option.

Hammer

Seems that Rick and the gang still have Tyreese in their hearts. It’s a perfect, modifiable and lightweight weapon.

Meat Tenderizer

As the in game name suggests, Rick uses this to strategically shatter bones. A good shot to the knee caps will surely cripple an adversary.

Sledgehammer

Rick can get a sledge from Road to Survival and Walking Dead: Destines. It’s always a heavy but strong choice for melee combat.

Battle Axe

Seems like Jerry left his big ass axe at Alexandria. Rick, Michonne, Daryl and Carol will use it in the VR game.

Crowbar

A decent choice for a close range fight, it makes short work of any walker if you start bashing their face in.

Sword

Less of a sword and more like a big ass machete, Jason Voorhees style. It’s one of Rick’s exclusive weapons from Road to Survival.

Katana

There are several video games where Rick can get a katana. In the VR game, Rick can also use a golden katana.

Spiked Club

A customized club that Rick uses in later seasons of the show. It’s also in fortnite!

Lucille

In Road to Survival and the canon VR game, Rick can get his own baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire.

CRM Kill Stick

A basic sort of trident from the CRM, usually given to low tier workers. Rick doesn’t really carry it anymore after ranking up, but he used it for a while.

Spear

Likely a gift from the Hilltop, Rick uses it in the mobile tie in game Walking Dead: No Man’s Land. It has a few special effects attached to it.

M67 Hand Grenade

A pull-pin explosive that Rick looted off of dead military, it could destroy the windows of a CDC Building, which were unaffected by several characters' blows and even a shotgun blast.

Fragmentation Grenades

Rick has used hand grenades a lot throughout the franchise. Negan's could cause large holes in Alexandria's streets and CRM Grenades could make this large explosion.

Homemade Explosives

A small explosive rigged together with whatever Rick’s group could find in the prison, it’s only slightly weaker than a typical grenade.

AP Mines

Aka an Anti-Personnel Mine that's buried into the ground to catch enemies off guard. They’re not designed to be lethal but rather to maim a target.

Molotov Cocktails

Hand made fire in a bottle. Rick can carry up to five of these on a single mission.

Flashbang Grenades

In Road to Survival they are used to stun an enemy for one turn but in real life they can permanently blind if it goes off within close range.

Shock Bombs

Some sort of small explosive that, assumedly, produces a powerful shock to its target and deals large amounts of damage, while also inflicting status effects on the target.

Various Gas Grenades

Nerve agents specifically can cause a multitude of ailments depending on the length of exposure. Including anything from a runny nose and nausea to hallucinations and seizures. Rick also has access to tear gas, CS triple chasers… and knock out gas. Did you know this shit doesn't actually exist in real life? Well, not in the way movies portray it at least. It’s actually way more deadly. In Road to Survival it’s used to incap enemies, activating as soon as it hits them.

RDIM

A portable explosive device from the CRM. It’s some sort of pushable battering ram that when activated flares alarms and causes a massive explosion.

Hand Replacement

In the comics universe, The Governor chops Rick’s hand off pretty early into the series. Rick would later get a prosthetic that is usually this flexible hook thing but for combat it also has a knife attachment. Nifty!

CRM Prosthetic Hand

After lopping his hand off at the wrist, the CRM gave Rick something straight out of Assassin’s Creed. It has a hidden wrist blade and is great for defense, with Rick using it as a shield against Beale.

Walker Guts

Rick has used this to cover himself, using the scent to move through herds undetected and as done by Negan, can be lathered onto weapons to infect enemies with the Wildfire Virus. Rick himself has also thought to weaponize Walkers in the past, so this tactic likely isn’t too out of character. Rick and the gang also just has a fuck ton of bloody shirts for camouflage.

Binoculars

Used in season 2 of the show, binoculars kinda just speak for themselves, no? They let you see further.

Tasers

A cop with a taser, who would've guessed? While we don’t see what kind they are in the comics themselves. Thomas (one of the prisoners) in Road to Survival is equipped with a stun gun, which is likely what Rick meant here. The CRM also equips its soldiers with tasers as well.

Silencers

These tend to be off movie logic, being far quieter than they'd actually be in real life. In the TellTale series, Lee and Carly used a fucking pillow to silence a glock.

Prison Riot Gear

This is the same gear that deflected sniper shots and protected Glenn from close range assault rifle fire. Though, he was still hurt quite a bit. It should also be noted that riot gear in real life isn't designed for this, so whatever Rick is rocking is pretty tough.

CRM Body Armor

The suit is layered with protective wire and also has a helmet, red flashlight and a PRV (When pressed any CRM helicopter within 300 miles can find it). Michonne used a Walker wearing this same armor to defend against point blank shots from an assault rifle.

2011 Hyundai Tucson

Somehow managed to get one despite the apocalypse starting in 2010. According to the “Road for Woodbury” novel, an SUV could tear up a building with “the force of a wrecking ball” and in another novel, one was compared to a catapult.

Horses

Rick's a cowboy at heart and some of his most iconic scenes involve him riding a horse. A horse in this mobile game can also aid him against CC attacks.

Pick-up Truck

Rick has on occasion driven around a pick-up truck in the comics. In the novels a truck could take down a small pine tree and in this game one could plow through metal gates.

Motorcycle

A bitchin’ hog that Rick used in the early issues of the comics, this idea was later repurposed for Daryl in the TV show.

Dale’s RV

A reliable and recurring vehicle throughout the series. Dale's RV was strong enough to smash through a metal gate and Jeremiah's RV in the novels could pulverize Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

CRM Helicopter

Rick on occasion in his spin off has flown one of these bad boys. It has the capability to dispense large clouds of chlorine gas and shoot high powered missiles.

Various other tools

Rick has carried a ton of extra gear on his journeys. Consisting of typical things like spare ammo, flashlights, flare guns, welding gloves, a fire extinguisher, camera, walking cane, glass bottles, bolt cutters, gasoline, lighters to regular police gear like road spikes, handcuffs, walkie-talkies, etc. He’s also gotten some nifty things from the CRM, like tactical rope, oars, maps and these weird light discs. Within Road to Survival, Rick can acquire items that can buff his physical stats, help with bleeding, and make his weapons more powerful.

Various healing and extra armoring options

Fighting the undead is obviously dangerous, you can never be over prepared. Rick has used antibiotics, peroxide, band aids, aspirin, bulletproof vest, helmets, a gas mask, medkits, food, smelling salts, a riot shield and a bunch of healing items from Road to Survival.

Mobile Game Weapons

In the Games: No Man's Land, Empires and Road to Survival there are a plethora of weapons that Rick could potentially wield but are too numerous to list out on their own. These weapons can grant buffs to Rick and others, as well as debuffs and status effects to enemies. It should be noted that in No Man's Land, Rick is only of the Shooter and Scout classes and can only wield select weapons.

Combat Modifications

In Walking Dead: Road to Survival, Rick can be equipped with 5 Combat Mods at a time. These can do a plethora of things. From usual rpg stuff like increasing damage, health, defense and crit to other stuff such as granting better resistances to status effects or giving the ability to inflict said status effects. These all can be upgraded to be slightly better.

Joel Miller

Taurus Model 66

Joel’s personal go-to weapon. Used as early as his first encounter with the infected. Joel has upgraded it to have a higher fire rate, faster reload speed and be able to deal higher damage. Joel has also used a Smith & Wesson Model 13 but ended up replacing that pistol with this.

El Diablo

It’s basically a pocket sniper rifle.. Revolver thing. With a few upgrades, it gets the usual higher reload speed, ammo capacity and firing rate but with the very nice addition of armor piercing rounds. It ends up being replaced

Colt Defender

A 1911-style pistol, also referred to as a 9mm. Joel has upgraded it to have a faster fire rate and reload speed, as well as much higher ammo capacity, holding up to 28 shots at a time.

Mossberg 500

A gift from Bill (The Goat), as said in Factions it’s “a close range bruiser that downs enemies in one shot up close”. Joel has also upgraded it to have longer range, lower recoil and higher clip capacity.

Bow

Joel is quite skilled with a bow. He can even craft his own arrows and also carries explosive variants, strong enough to rip right through body armor. Other explosive arrows are capable of smashing apart concrete pillars in the No Return mode.

Remington 870 Shotgun

This is a gun that’s only ever appeared in official art for the first game, as seen attached to Joel’s back here. It’s been around more than half a century and is one of the best selling guns of all time for a good reason, known for its dependability and durability.

Colt M16A4

A weapon that Joel could only acquire at the end of the first game, via looting it off of dead Fireflies. It’s a weapon built for convenience and accuracy (Even if Joel technically misuses it during the game).

AIA Arctic Warfare Magnum

A scoped military sniper. It is the only weapon in game to have infinite ammo (Though this could be argued as a game mechanic) and in the multiplayer mode, it acts as a semi-automatic weapon

Beretta 92fs

It’s the world’s most trusted Military and Police Force firearm, known for its extraordinary accuracy. Joel has also temporarily used a Beretta Model 70.

M4A1 Assault Rifle

It’s a fully automatic carbine rifle and is a lighter, shorter variant of the classic M16. Joel used this at the start of the show, taking down a Clicker with it in close range.

Ruger Mini 14 GB-F

Looted off of a Firefly and used to bring down the entire base in the show. It’s a simple, semi-automatic rifle with a muzzle velocity of 990 m/s and has a range of around 200 yards.

Remington Model 700

Used by Joel in the tv show while teaching Ellie how to shoot. It’s been a popular pick for hunters for over 60 years and the official remington website says it’s “out of the box accuracy is unmatched”.

Winchester Model 70

A trusty bolt action hunting rifle that Joel has used in the game and the show. Joel has upgraded its stability, scoping damage output and ammo capacity. Making it a reliable choice at a range.

Chiappa Rhino/Dan Wesson Hybrid

Joel really seems to like revolvers, huh? Curious…. As the name suggests, this gun doesn’t actually exist and is a hybrid of two different revolvers.

Browning High Power

An older firearm used as early as World War 2, but currently is no longer in production. This semi-automatic pistol has a muzzle velocity of 355 m/s and is effective with ranges of almost 60 yards.

Remington Model 870

A replacement for the Mossberg in the remake of the first game, it acts essentially the same and has the same upgrades.

Shorty Shotgun

A miniature shotgun that packs a hell of a punch. Joel can upgrade it to have a smaller spread, higher ammo capacity and way less recoil that when he first gets it.

Flamethrower

A weapon rigged together with pipes and bike parts, this is probably Joel’s most destructive weapon. Joel can upgrade it to be a bit better but regardless it still instantly kills enemies and is ideal for dealing with cordyceps infected, especially Bloaters.

Pipe Wrench

A large steel wrench that Joel used during the start of the outbreak in the show. Using it to fucking molly whop an incoming infected.

Molotov Cocktails

Hand crafted by Joel himself. It’s filled with hard liquor or some type of gas and is able to be used within water. So like, good luck trying to dive into a pool to avoid this shit.

Nail Bombs

Another gift from Bill, they’re hand crafted bombs filled with blades and scissors for maximum effectiveness. Typically able to oneshot most enemies, Bloaters aside. Via some books, Joel has learned to make their explosions larger and detonate quicker.

Smoke Bombs

Yet another hand made weapon, showing off Joel’s ingenuity. They’re great for distracting soldiers and infected alike, making them very useful for stealth situations or a quick getaway.

Baseball Bat

A wooden bat that Joel can “modify”, really he just tapes some sharp shit to it. But it works all the same and it is slightly faster than the led pipe.

2 x 4

Despite being a rather slow weapon to use, it can become pretty strong once upgraded with a rag, a blade and a binding item. Able to down even armored individuals with minimal effort on Joel's part.

Shovel

Taking care of dead bodies to burn is hard work. Shovels make it easier to deal with (I guess).

Various Knives

Joel is no stranger to knife combat and stabbing fuckers in the throat. He’s used several blades, including a Buck 119 Special, shiv, switchblade and a Buck 10.

Hatchet

One of the few available melee weapons in The Last of Us part 1 and is one of many tools that Joel packs up for his journey in the beginning of the show. In-game, it’s very reliable against most enemies, being a one shot kill on anything aside from a Bloater.

Metal Pipe

In-game the pipe is a durable choice, lasting up to nine hits. Joel can also choose to upgrade it with a binding or blade item, making it far more deadly.

Machete

Probably Joel’s best choice of melee weapon, it can kill in a single shot and has pretty good range. I’m sure duct taping scissors n’ shit makes it that much more effective than it already is?

Hydrocodone Pills

Joel did anything he could to make some extra cash. While they can be addictive, they're supposed to be used as a pain reliever, targeting your nervous system specifically. They can also prevent coughing.

Scanner

A small, portable device used by the military to detect if someone is infected by pressing it up to their neck. Even if they’re immune it will show positive, as seen with Ellie.

Miscellaneous Tools

Joel usually carries a pack around with him to carry all of his necessities. Including: gun holsters, bricks, glass bottles, binoculars, crowbar, duct tape, sleeping bags, lanterns, all purpose charger, flashlights, gas cans, rags, maps, electrical tape and bolt cutters.

Gas Mask

A protective mask that can allow Joel to breath around and avoid being infected by Cordecpyse spore clouds.

Chef Boyardee Beef-a-Roni

This shit is fucking delicious. But it’s twenty years past its expiration date. Is it worth it? (yes) Joel has a stash of Ravioli too. On a more serious note, food is very valuable as a healing option for Joel, things such as energy bars and canned food can replenish it slightly.

2001 Chevrolet

A parting gift from Bill and Frank in the show. Joel keeps a ton of supplies, food and gear on the back.

Dodge Durango SUV

Looted from the Firefly’s hospital base as a quick getaway vehicle. A reliable choice for Soccer Moms!

Health Kits

An item that can either be crafted on the spot or found throughout the world. It’s Joel’s most powerful option for healing, as it can replenish three bars of his health, four when upgraded. Joel can also consume candy bars and canned food to restore his health.

Supplements

Either found in the form of pill bottles or plants, these allow Joel to enhance various things. Such as health, healing speed, listen mode range etc.

Horses

Cars and gasoline are hard to come by over 20 years into an apocalypse, so horses are a natural companion for Joel and other survivors like Ellie and Tommy.

Training Manuals

Bill Overbeck

All guns are equipped with flashlights and scoped weapons are unhindered by thick walls of smoke. In certain Mutations, like Gib Fest, guns have infinite ammo. Though in regular gameplay, only pistols have this luxury.

AK-47

Has a 40 round magazine with 360 rounds in total. It does the most damage of all of Left 4 Dead's rifles.

M16 Assault Rifle

Has a 50 round magazine with 360 reserve rounds. It’s the fastest reload of any gun in Left 4 Dead.

Combat Rifle

Has a 60 round magazine and a 360 round reserve. It shoots 3 round bursts and is the most accurate assault rifle.

Hunting Rifle

Boasts a 15 round magazine and has 180 rounds in reserve. It one shots all common infected and has the highest accuracy of any weapon in Left 4 Dead

Sniper Rifle

Has 30 round magazines with 180 rounds in reserve. It has a higher firing rate than the hunting rifle.

Pump Action Shotgun

It has a 8 round magazine with 72 rounds in reserve. It does slightly more damage than the chrome shotgun.

Chrome Shotgun

It has 8 rounds with 72 rounds in reserve. It has a slightly tighter spread than the police magnum

Tactical Shotgun

It has a 10 round magazine and 90 rounds in reserve. It deals slightly more damage than the combat shotgun.

Combat Shotgun

It has a 10 round magazine and 90 rounds in reserve. It has a slightly tighter spread than the benelli.

M60 Machine Gun

It has a 150 magazine but ammo cannot be refilled (Minus Gib Fest). It obliterates common infected into piles of body parts.

M1911

Bill can carry one or two at a time. It has 15 rounds in each magazine and unlimited reserve ammo.

P220 & Glock

A couple of dual wielded pistols. They have 15 rounds in each magazine and unlimited reserve ammo.

Magnum Desert Cobra

It carries 8 round mags and has unlimited reserve ammo. It one shots Common Infected on any difficulty, even on realism mode

SG 552

It has a 50 round magazine with 360 reserve rounds. It is scoped and has the highest firing rate of every rifle (slowed when scoped in).

Scout

It has a 15 round magazine and 180 rounds in reserve. It’s a bolt action rifle with the fastest reload of any sniper rifle in Left 4 Dead.

AWP

It has a 20 round magazine with 180 rounds in reserve. It’s a bolt action rifle and has the highest damage of any weapon besides shotguns, M-60s, and grenade launchers.

MP5

It has a 50 round magazine with 650 rounds in reserve. It acts as a medium between the submachine gun and the silenced version.

Submachine Gun

It has a 50 round magazine with 650 rounds in reserve. It is more accurate than the silenced version but is sadly the least damaging gun in the game

Grenade Launcher.

One of Ellis’ favorites. It has a 1 round magazine and 30 rounds in reserve. It has contact shells and ammo could not be refilled. It one-shots all infected on a direct hit, kills Witches and Tanks in 3 or 4 shots. It's capable of blowing up a gas tanker and pairing this with incendiary ammo essentially lets it shoot fire grenades.

Mounted Minigun and Heavy Machine Gun

They have unlimited ammo and both are capable of a high rate of fire. They must be used sporadically or risk becoming overheated.

Melee Weapons

All of the following weapons are the same when it comes to lethality and function, as they one-shot commons and most special infected while also being unbreakable. They’re all capable of taking down Tanks and Witches in 20 hits and 4 hits respectively. The only variables between them is the speed and direction they are swung, which doesn’t affect gameplay significantly enough to notice.

Machete

One of the fastest and most common melee weapons in Left 4 Dead 2, able to cut infected to pieces no problemo.

Katana

A fan favorite choice. Boasting great range and speed, the “ninja sword” is a reliable choice for up close encounters.

Shovel

A sturdy round point shovel that makes quick work of commons, it has decent range and is a perfect bludgeoning weapon.

Crowbar

A common weapon among all Valve games for obvious reasons. Louis feels like Gordon Freeman using it.

Pitchfork

Added in the Last Stand update, it has reliable range but it is rather slow to use.

Cricket Bat

You’ve got red on you. Like all over you, this thing makes a mess of infected.

Baseball Bat

A classic choice for zombie killing. Back in the day, preordering Left 4 Dead 2 from Gamestop got you a special variant.

Guitar

Specifically a ibanez GAX-70. It’s a pretty nice guitar, but nobody has time to appreciate that.

Knife

This is notoriously the worst weapon in Left 4 Dead 2 but at least… tries to make up for it by being the fastest melee weapon.

Frying Pan

A pretty common and fast melee weapon, usually dropped by infected police officers.

Golf Club

It’s specifically a driver and in game functions almost identically to the katana. Though in a game achievement, it shows a hybrid.

Chainsaw

Groovy. This grants 50% damage resistance while attacking and in the Chainsaw Massacre mutation, they have unlimited fuel. They can also rip through the armor of the riot cop uncommon infected and can kill Witches in just one second.

Golden Crowbar

A secret unlockable in recent (lol) updates of Left 4 Dead, collecting them all grants the player a Half Life inspired achievement.

Molotovs

Fire in a bottle that covers a small area in flame for about 15 seconds. People just have these laying everywhere apparently.

Pipe Bombs

It's a homemade black powder explosive that has parts of a smoke detector, allowing it to draw infected towards it. According to the dev commentary, it can reduce zombies to red mist and in the sacrifice comics has made small building sized explosions.

Bile Bombs

A canister of Boomer Bile. Just as with the Boomer Enemy, whatever this stuff touches, the infected will mob.

Fireworks

Boxes of high powered fireworks that make great distractions for a quick getaway. Bill can also get fireworks within Dead by Daylight for blinding killers.

Gas Cans

Typical gasoline canisters that can be used similarly to molotovs. Aka, catching a lot of shit on fire.

Environmental Explosives

Oxygen tanks, propane tanks and gas barrels are always laid around Left 4 Dead maps for the survivors to use to their advantage. Making short work of large groups of commons.

Land Mines

Acquired through certain mutation gamemodes, the gang can lay these around as traps for any incoming infected.

Military Armor

In Dead by Daylight, Bill gets a bullet proof vest. Possibly a gift from The Entity to promote hope. Bill can also get a christmas sweater and a customized jacket sporting his military credentials

Medkits

Replenishes 80% of health. People have done entire speed runs of Left 4 Dead just using a medkit as a weapon lmao and it’s able to heal up Survivors from pretty much ANYTHING.

Portable Defibrillator

Revives a deceased teammate (regardless of how long they've been dead) and restores 50% health. These are not realistic at all, being able to revive survivors from things like broken necks and being shot in the face.

Pain Pills

Dampens pain (duh) and temporarily restores 50% health. Probably shouldn’t just down the whole bottle though, that’ll fuck up your liver.

Adrenaline Shots

Temporarily amps the strength and speed of the user all around and makes them resistant to being slowed down. Adrenaline can do a multitude of other things in real life, such as heightening your senses and mentally distracting you from pain.

Gnome Chompski

He’s unlocked in the Dark Carnival campaign and can heal the survivors very slowly. Annoying bitch irl and LOVES Kiryu vs Dom.

Laser Sights

As the name says, it’s an attachable laser sight for any gun. It decreases a firearm’s spread, making it far more accurate.

Incendiary Rounds

They’re essentially fire bullets. They cannot set off car alarms, for whatever reason. Oddly making them preferable for a more stealthy approach.

Explosive Ammo

Grants wider AOE to firearms, though Survivors must be careful in close range as this ammo type can inflict damage back on them. It cannot be used for headshots.

Sailboat

It’s just a regular ass sailboat. However, it is stocked up with plenty of weapons, ammo, medicine and food. After Bill’s sacrifice, the rest of his crew sailed off to the Keys and found safety.

Armored Van

Inspired by Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, it's a suped up van with metal armoring and a front mounted battering ram.

Items and Add-Ons

In Dead by Daylight survivors like Bill can gather useful tools from within the trails themselves or from the blood web, giving them access to a bigass inventory of goodies.

  • Med-Kits

Pretty self explanatory, you use these to heal up.

Notable Add-ons include:

  • Flashlights

These are used to temporarily blind attackers.

Notable Add-ons include:

  • High-End Sapphire Lens. Optimizes the power and range of flashlights. Increases duration, reach and brightness.

  • Long Life Battery. Adds 6 seconds to the battery.

  • Odd Bulb. A heavy and completely opaque bulb of unknown origin which emits a faint light even when turned off. Increases the brightness and blind duration of the flashlight, though at the cost of faster battery depletion.

  • Broken Bulb. Increases the brightness and blind duration. Makes things extra spooky.

  • Toolboxes

These are used to aid in generator repair or sabotaging hooks.

Notable Add-ons include:

  • Wire Spool. A spool of copper wire that adds 8 charges

  • Grip Wrench. An adjustable wrench with a tough grip, adds 15 seconds to the respawn time of sabotaged hooks.

  • Hacksaw. Increases sabotage speed.

  • Socket Swivels. Increases repair speed.

  • Brand New Part. Decreases the amount of charges required to finish fixing a generator.

  • Keys

These radiate with an unknown power and are used to unlock Vigo’s Escape Hatches (Minus the Broken Key)

Notable Add-ons include:

  • Blood Amber. Reveals the aura of an enemy within 32 meters.

  • Milky Glass. Channels the Fog’s energy and can reopen closed hatches

  • Unique Wedding Ring. It radiates with a mysterious energy. It can reveal the aura of the obsession to the user at all times, in turn makes themselves immune to becoming the obsession.

  • Weaved Ring. Prevents the loss of attached items.

  • Firecrackers

These are used to blind attackers, usually done as a surprise attack when they’re off guard, such as when picking up a down survivor.

  • EMP

An Electromagnetic Pulse device that can temporarily short out electronics within a small radius and after a short charge up. This can be taken out of trials, as shown with Gabriel here.

  • Reagents

Can be used to summon (or reduce) fog around maps within Dead by Daylight, making stealth easier (or harder).

  • Salt Pouches/Statues

These are used to slightly increase the luck of the user and allies. In Dead by Daylight, this grants you a better chance to unhook yourself.

  • Maps

These are used to track items of interest throughout the game’s maps. Affectionately called burritos within the community.

Notable add-ons include:

  • Flashbangs, Blast Mines, WireTaps and Ice Grenades. All granted via teachable perks from Resident Evil Characters and Ellen Ripley. Though they require a set up to get.

  • Arcane Dousing Rod. Provides a directional cue when an Unstable Rift spawns within 24 Meters of the user.

  • Bard Guitar. Playing this grants the user one of several benefits.

  • Bloodshot Eye. A strange eye that has the capability of finding “strange blood”.

  • Void Crystals. A small crystal that when smashed on the ground produces a thick smoke, turning the user invisible as long as they are within it.

  • Mistle Toes. An add-on usable for Killers and Survivors, it allows the user to start the trial with 6 snowballs. It’s really just a goofy thing brought in for winter events.

Abilities

Rick Grimes

Extreme Tenacity

He once pulled himself off a piece of rebar impaling him and continued to fight, then survived a bridge exploding that sent him into a fast moving river. During this same showing, Rick was still able to accurately fire his colt python, getting three headshots back to back. In some other instances he gave Carl so much blood that he could barely stand, recovered after having an arrow shot through his abdomen and took a relentless beating from The Governor. He is also willing to impale himself in fights and even after being shot could still fight against the Saviors. Even after suffering a gut shot, Rick was still able to crawl to safety and in the show, he cut off his own hand then proceeded to cauterize the wound on a burning Walker in an attempt to escape the CRM.

Great Stamina

After Lori's death, Rick started clearing out a prison block of Walkers by himself. In a deleted scene, Hershel says he was doing this "throughout the night". It should be noted that Rick was going absolute bat shit during this time, mentally torturing himself over Lori's death. Later, along with others, Rick fought Walkers for hours on end in the Battle for Alexandria.

Great Agility

Even after just getting out of his coma, Rick could make leaps across rooftops even when weighed down by several firearms. In some video games Rick can also perform dodge rolls to evade damage.

Minor Regeneration

In Walking Dead: Destines, Rick and others can heal after killing enemies and can heal himself through his own adrenaline, whether it be flight or fight. While Rick himself never shows a sort of “healing factor”, Carl does to an extent (although very slow).

Instinct

Rick can activate his “Instinct”, which highlights enemies, weapons, footprints and useful items. Able to highlight them even through walls. Huh.. seems kinda familiar…

Motivational Hallucinations

When on the brink of Death, Rick has had visions of past allies that encouraged him to keep up the good fight, specifically Sasha, Shane and Hershel.

Potential Holy Protection

Father Gabriel will often pray for God to watch over the group and lead them to safety. This has obviously never helped Rick out before but it’s interesting.

Rage State

No matter how much Rick wants and tries to hide it, this is who he really is. When in great emotional distress or while heavily injured, Rick will enter a state of pure rage. Becoming more vicious and bloodthirsty, making him more than a match for even foes larger than himself. Rick has bitten a man's throat outtwice and has gutted a dude starting from the groin, working up to the throat. Even in the first instance of Rick giving in to his anger, he beat a man to the point of his own hand breaking.

Adrenaline Rushes

These do a variety of things, usually buffing and healing Rick and/or his Allies (All are listed here) Rick also has Leader Skills and Specialist Skills, which are somewhat similar and there are a plethora of other games that give Rick similar capabilities. Adrenaline can do a multitude of other things in real life, such as heightening your senses and distracting from pain.

The Wildfire Virus

Like everyone in this universe, Rick is infected with the Wildfire Virus and will turn upon death, no matter how they die as long as no great trauma is done to the brain (It’s important to know that bites are not what turn a victim specifically). As stated by a CDC Scientist, when someone is killed by this it invades the brain like meningitis, their adrenal glands hemorrhage and the brain shuts down then followed by internal organs. After restarting the brain stem, resurrection time varies wildly, in the same scene it's said that it can take anywhere from 3 minutes to 8 hours (Though Carol in the comics turned within seconds). All traces of humanity are lost. After being bitten, the turning process itself causes victims to become incredibly ill, they feel cold but are hot to the touch and causing their bones to ache unbearably, and become bed ridden once enough time has passed. Walkers themselves are extremely resilient, being able to get back up even when their head is almost completely unattached or being decapitated. It should also be noted that they are faster when fresh, have no blood pressure, never tire, and when their arms and jaws are removed, over time they'll eventually become docile.

They are resistant to radiation, fire, just about anything unless it destroys the brain. It is also implied that if given enough time Walkers can learn through experience and some variants are capable of simple tasks such as opening doors, climbing walls, using weapons and ripping the armor off victims. Walkers have a heavily decreased decomposition time, being able to last for decades even when exposed to the elements. This is commented on in the novels and the World Beyond TV show. Walkers are very sensitive to sound and also seem to have a very heightened sense of smell. Being able to easily tell the difference between a human and another Walker, according to the novels they can “Smell menstrual blood like sharks”. They also have a sorta natural pack mentality. This virus does not only just make typical Romero zombies, however. Wildfire is notoriously adaptive, giving walkers the ability to naturally meld with their environment. Resulting in armored Walkers, Walker Kings and in a few video games even massive big boys, barring the experiment variants. There are no known cures for Wildfire, not even intense amounts of radiation have been able to get rid of it fully, as elaborated on in interviews.

Joel Miller

Enhanced Senses

A recurring mechanic in the series is “Listen Mode”, an ability that many survivors in the games can use, not just Joel. As long as they’re being quiet themselves they can use this ability as long as they want. Allowing them to sense where items and even enemies are located. In certain No Return mods, Joel’s listen mode can reveal invisible enemies

High Stamina

Joel and Ellie trekked through half of the United States to find the Fireflies, constantly on that move for months on end. Joel has shown he can engage in hectic combat for extended periods of time with little to no rest, such as during his attack on the Firefly base and during his plethora of battling hordes of Infected. Shrugging off all sorts of punishment like gunshots and stab wounds with none of it slowing him down.

Supernatural Endurance

Joel is simply built differently. He can withstand brutal beatings from ravenous infected and shrug off gunshots with no issue. Joel once powered through being impaled by rebar, pushing through the pain and fighting off a few bandits for a short time before passing out. Joel should also be a bit tougher than Ellie, who also endures some crazy stuff, like being impaled by a tree branch or pulling arrows out of her shoulder. In the show, Joel still shows off some impressive endurance. In a remake of the rebar scene, Joel pulls a spike out of this side and powers through Ellie stitching him up and later while still in recovery, was able to stealth around and over power David’s men batman style.

Crafting

Another recurring mechanic in the series. Joel, Ellie and Abby have all showcased impressive improvisation skills. Joel has shown he can modify melee weapons and craft explosives by hand and has read books on how to make them more effective. Joel can also upgrade his guns by hand, making them overall more effective in various ways like, firing speed, ammo capacity, sturdiness etc. Joel can craft things such as:

  • Health kits: Can craft it via rag and alcohol

  • Shivs: Can craft it via blade and binding

  • Smoke bombs: Can craft it via explosive and sugar

  • Molotov cocktails: Can craft it via rag and alcohol

  • Nail bombs: Can craft it via blade and explosive

  • Melee upgrades: Can craft it via binding and blade

No Return Modifications

Certain mods in Last of Us Part 2’s No Return mode can grant Joel and others special abilities to help them on missions and they are allowed to have multiple active at a time.

Cordyceps

While Joel may not be Rick or Bill who are carriers of their respective disease; Joel uses the second best thing: using the infected as actual weapons. So it’s important to go over how the Cordyceps infection actually works.

Infection started as early as 2013. And seems to start from crops originating from South America and extending to Central America and Mexico which then traveled to America. Cordyceps mushroom is a parasitic fungus that takes over a host's mind and alters its behavior. One becomes a host via breathing spores emitted by the cordyceps or coming in contact with one who contains the cordyceps. After infection, the parasite travels to the host’s brain over a period of one to two days. The fungus pushes through the host tissue to allow for the releases of airborne spores. Dead infected produce spores. Once someone who’s unaffected breathes spores they will spontaneously cough and become infected. Breathing the spores you only have a few hours and a day at most before the infection starts. Dead or alive infected then create fungus all of their corpse which also leads it spreading over walls. These then can create spores which can convert those into infected.

The Infected have stages

  • Stage 1 - Runner. The cordyceps have taken over the victims motor functions. Fast and agile

  • Stage 2 - Stalker. They hide and ambush victims

  • Stage 3 - Clicker. They can not see. Completely blind and have active hearing. Uses echolocation to seek out prey. Have ferocious attacks and are extremely lethal

  • Stage 4 - Page is partially ripped

  • We are also given another infected stage posters.

    • Stage 1 - Due to the cordyceps, the Runner's motor functions are completely taken over. Fast and agile.

    • Stage 2 - Stalkers used the environment to hide and ambush victims

    • Stage 3 - Clickers are completely blind but have acute hearing and use echolocation. Are ferocious and extremely lethal

    • Stage 4 - Bloaters are an evolution of stage 3 infected. Capable of throwing acidic projectiles

Neil Druckmann has recently confirmed the Fireflies were capable of making a cure.

In the show, Cordyceps is a little different but we’re still going to address it as it does still follow many of the same rules as the game.

 Bill Overbeck

Bunny Hopping

Is this technically a glitch? Yes. Do we care? No. It’s an integral part of Left 4 Dead’s gameplay and Valve games in general so we’re using it. Through the player exploiting the game's code, they fuck with reality and can move faster. It’s basically jumping forward without losing momentum and gaining speed by strafing, which is basically shifting side to side as you go. It allows Bill and others to traverse maps with ease and evade infected with no issue. It’s a hard skill to master and only true Left 4 Dead tryhards have it nailed down.

Inhuman Endurance

The survivors react with mild annoyance after being shot with high powered shotguns and rifles. They can get back up after being torn into by Hunters and Witches. Bill himself gave absolutely zero fucks while he was attacked by three Tanks at once, knowing his job was complete and during the beginning of the outbreak, while still experiencing the side effects of medical sedatives, Bill fought his way out of the hospital and the infested streets while basically butt-ass naked. In Dead by Daylight, Bill can just walk off being mauled by dogs, impaled on hooks and by The Deathslinger’s redeemer, as well as just being hit by all sorts of sharp things like chainsaws, clawed gloves and rusty swords.

Great Stamina

Bill and his crew battled zombies for 2 weeks straight with little solid rest, covering traveling all throughout Philadelphia during this to find any sort of safe haven. All while enduring brutal wounds and having little food or water.

Non-Physical Interaction

In Dead by Daylight, Bill can harm spirits and break out of their grasp, being capable of harming characters like The Spirit, Sadako and the soul of Charles Lee Ray. So yeah, Bill could deck a ghost in the face.

Healing

In Dead by Daylight, survivors like Bill have the ability to heal each other with nothing but their bare hands. Recovering their friends from chainsaw slashes, deep cuts or being punched in the face by a fist bigger than their head. Though, they need certain perks to heal themselves without equipment.

Dead by Daylight Perks

Bill is considered one of the better Survivors in the game with his personal perks: Left Behind, Borrowed Time and Unbreakable. Giving him the abilities to aid himself better in dire situations and protect allies. Bill also has access to the teachable perks of other Survivors, allowing him to use the following (but not limited to). Though it is important to remember that a lot of these require specific circumstances to activate and are subject to changing as the game continues to produce content.

Green Flu

The “Green Flu” is a certified class 4 threat by CEDA. While the Survivors are immune to the flu, they still carry it and risk infecting those who are not immune. It is extremely dangerous and is evolving daily, sometimes being airborne, other times not, making it insanely hard to pin down and actually cure. Obviously, it’s less of a flu and more like rabies, even altering the vision of those who aren’t immune before they turn. Though, infecting others is insinuated to require them to be within arms reach and it can take a while to take hold, though according to the wall writings in game, it can happen in as little as five minutes. In truth, other than what we’re shown in the sacrifice comics, very little is known about the Green Flu.

The only solid and consistent thing that’s known about it is that whatever makes Bill and the others immune comes from a gene on the father’s side. It’ll turn non-carriers into vicious, bloodthirsty monsters. Infected themselves are hyper aggressive and move very fast, sometimes even taking their anger out on each other to satiate their blood lust but typically they have a sort of “angry mob” mentality, not much else. Although some do seem smart enough to know to take armor off of a target. This virus also has the slight chance of turning a victim into a number of specials, as shown with the Church Guy. These can range from large behemoths like The Tank, acid-spitters, agile Hunters and many more. Showing that not only is this virus insanely adaptive and aggressive, but versatile as well.

Weaknesses

Rick Grimes

Rick is anything but a perfect leader. While Rick tends to keep a level head, his bloodlust can make him incredibly reckless and impulsive.  Focusing only on killing his target and disregarding his own safety. This also plays into his mental stability. Rick has been through many traumatic events and struggles internally with his past mistakes on a regular basis and while Rick also has shown incredible tenacity, even on death’s door, he is still a mortal man with limits to how much punishment he can take.

Joel Miller

Joel started out a broken man, having lost touch since the death of his daughter. Making him cold, closing himself off from others out of fear of caring for them. Even when spending a considerable amount of time with Ellie, Joel still heavily struggled to open up and accept his feelings. Joel at the end of the day is just a man with limits, mentally and physically. While he has shown tremendous tenacity in the face of insane odds, but a well placed shot will take him down like any other man.

Bill Overbeck

Without beating around the bush here, Bill is very old. He’s pushing into his 70s and is far past his prime. He has a permanently injured knee from his days in Vietnam and is a regular chain smoker, to the point Bill cares very little about his own personal health. Even while in dangerous situations, Bill ain’t putting the cigs away. Bill is also notoriously stubborn and will tunnel vision his goals, as shown in the sacrifice comics, he is unwilling to help other survivors despite his comrades wanting to do otherwise. Preferring to put his own above any others.

Hypersonic and FTL Walking Dead?

We won’t be discussing Multi-City Block stuff, as anyone who actually read G1’s Clementine vs Ellie would know that’s not what they argued. Lol.

For those who did though, you may remember the Governor’s feat of “He knows he has only microseconds to get behind cover” from the short novel, “A Day at the Office”. This was written off as an outlier before but we had looked into the various other canon novels and found otherwise shockingly. As listed out above, there are several microsecond, lightning speed and even nanosecond statements for several characters within the comics universe and of course need to be directly questioned as these have insane implications.

Now, obviously these wouldn’t necessarily be outliers, since there is just a ridiculous amount of them, but are they just hyperbole?

These novels are all read through omnipotent narration, so characters just exaggerating themselves is not the case. Some of these scans can definitely be written off as hyperbole on their own, namely the lightning speed statements, but others go into far too much detail for this to be a solid argument against them. Specifically we need to talk about Lilly (No this isn’t Lilly from the Telltale Game, though it was going to be originally). The Descent novel says: “It takes only a moment for her eyes to register what she’s seeing and another nanosecond for that visual information to zap across her brain and travel through her cortex and into the rest of her body” and the Search and Destroy novel directly states “Over the space of a nanosecond, the time it takes a single synapse to fire in her brain” with the same novel backing this up later with “In the remaining nanoseconds of that silver flash, Lilly absorbs as much of the scene as possible”. You can also argue that these can be supported by the other more questionable microsecond and nanosecond statements, giving evidence that these characters can act at these speeds as well. As for the nanosecond statements regarding firearms, it's a bit harder to argue for, as this is contradicted by in universe statements about firing speeds, but could be argued to at least support characters like Rick being able to attack or dodge this fast. To add to this, we can also bring up that we technically have an on screen showing on this tier, as in the spin-off comic Rick Grimes 2000, that version of Rick could deflect lasers and is able to be fought by regular characters in RtS’s gameplay (This tidbit is pretty questionable, but it’s at least worth pointing out.)

Now, should you actually use this shit?

Well, there are some valid points to be brought up against the idea of Walking Dead characters being this fast. Obviously, it's kinda hard to argue whether the writers or Robert Kirkman understood what they were insinuating in these statements, even if they are ridiculously detailed. So author intent can be used as fair counters here. In the end, it's mostly up to personal opinion on whether to use these or not. While some of us agree that these statements are valid, it would be kinda silly to argue for them being any more than a massive high end interpretation for speed. We agreed these should really only be kept in mind if an opposing character has a similar argument and will not play into our verdict.

Is Road to Survival Canon?

Given just how much this game can give characters and the fact that it’s a mobile game, it’s fair to question if it’s even usable to begin with.

Quite simply, yes. Road to Survival is canon to the comics universe of The Walking Dead. The game’s story is mostly self contained with only minor appearances from main characters like Rick or Jesus, it does nothing in its story necessarily contradict comic canon, but it also goes out of its way to give expanded story on some characters and answers to what happens to certain minor characters that just go up and missing in the comics and novels, like Benjamin and Father Jeremiah. It even gives us our only visuals of novel exclusive characters, like the protagonists of the Typhoon novel. More importantly to the question though, the game’s developers worked directly with Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga to make sure the game fit within the universe, essentially giving it the green light from the creator himself and someone who also expanded on comic canon as well, as stated in this interview. So in the end, there is really no reason to ignore this game.

It is also important to note that Road to Survival is currently unavailable to download or play anymore, as its servers shut down in 2024. This would be a moot point against using it however. It being “lost media” wouldn’t have any effect on its canonicity and the likelihood of it being contradicted by the comics is unlikely as the comics themselves ended in 2019. On this note, it’s also worth throwing out that Overkill’s Walking Dead is also canon to the comics.

Walker Decomposition

A question that consistently comes up against certain feats in The Walking Dead, such as skull smashing and ripping zombies apart, is are these actually impressive? Given that they’re well.. Zombies. (And since most people are just going to skim, we probably need to directly address it lol)

Well, ignoring that there are plenty of cases where characters accomplish these feats against fresh Walkers, and sometimes even people. No, it’s not as impressive as if they did to an actual person but it’s also not as if they might as well be smashing a rotten watermelon either. Not only is just assuming they’re essentially mush weird, as they wouldn't be able to walk around, let alone attack and overpower people.. In real life, it can take around twenty years for bones exposed to the elements to fully decompose and within the universe of The Walking Dead, the Wildfire Virus grants its host a heavily slowed decomposition rate. Allowing them to stick around for decades, even in humid climates like the American South, as commented on in multiple interviews/Letter Hacks from Robert Kirkman and by scientists within the AMC universe. One of Robert Kirkman’s Letter Hacks says specifically: The natural progression is that, yeah, eventually there will be very, very few zombies because most of them will have died off and decayed away… will the series last long enough for us to get there? We’ll see! and the comic’s editor Sean Mackiewicz said on another occasion That’s probably generations away, but entirely feasible, sure”. We actually never really get to see this happen in the end of comics, the dead still roam the earth while Carl is almost into his forties, who was just seven years old when the apocalypse started. This could end up being subject to change in the show to be fair, but for now it’s all we really have to work off of.

It’s also worth pointing out that this question wouldn’t apply to Last of Us or Left 4 Dead, as their zombies aren’t undead but are living people infected with a sorta super version of rabies and are hijacked by a mutated fungus respectively.

Is Dead by Daylight Canon?

Unlike the vast majority of crossovers that Bill and the gang have had over the years, Dead by Daylight has solid reasoning in favor of it being viable here.

While Dead by Daylight is never directly stated to be canon by Valve, it doesn’t necessarily contradict Left 4 Dead’s canon either and even expands on its lore with its tomes, such as Bill's time in Vietnam and how exactly Bill came to meet Zoey, Louis and Francis. These are all things that Behaviour Interactive would have needed to get permission from Valve themselves to do in the first place due to licensing. It also specifically picks up directly after Bill's sacrifice according to Bill’s in-game lore biography, spotlight gameplay trailer and his cinematic trailer. This means Dead by Daylight can be interpreted as a sort of sequel and thus canon to the Left 4 Dead universe. Although keep in mind, this does not apply to all licensed characters within the fog. So we can only scale Bill to what we see shown in Dead by Daylight itself and we cannot scale him to the canon versions of characters like Ash Williams, Cheryl Mason, Leatherface, Ellen Ripley or the boulder punching (Stryker & Agent G victim) Chris Redfield. We also know the Entity has nerfed several of the more powerful characters within its realm, such as Vecna and Freddy Kreuger. So scaling Bill to potentially higher feats of these characters simply just falls flat.

And let’s face it. We’re never getting Left 4 Dead 3 (It was already scrapped). It took them EIGHT years to give us the last issue of the TF2 comics. So the chances of this getting retconned are basically zero, because Valve can barely count past it.

That fucking feat that Bang hates (FTL Dead by Daylight)

A small shout out to an earlier Bang blog, The Knight vs Apollyon. Which went over the Singularity's nanosecond statement already.

We felt it was important to address it once again for obvious reasons. But in short, nothing has really changed with this. It’s just Hux comprehending new information due to his robotic physiology and cannot really be translated into reaction speeds and thus, cannot really be scaled to Bill. As it’s just Hux understanding new information, not really reacting to or dodging anything. It’s also worth addressing that scaling fully to The Singularity is weird on its own as well. Hux himself considers the survivors “weak, slow and fragile”, with him even saying as much within the trails themselves while hunting them down. More than likely meaning Hux isn't going all out on the survivors to begin with as he’s just not taking them seriously at all, making it difficult to justify scaling to certain feats. The lore in the game’s tomes also backs this up by going at length talking about how much superior Hux is to his human targets. So with this in consideration, we do not believe Bill, or really anyone in Dead by Daylight should scale to The Singularity.

Is Ellis a filthy liar?

Left 4 Dead 2’s very own blabbermouth is notorious for weaving insane stories about him and his buddy (quite possibly lover) Keith.

The question here is should we take what Ellis says at face value and obviously no, we shouldn’t. While there may be some truth to these stories, some of them are very obvious exaggerations like his claims of “When the Midnight Riders play, they can be seen from space.” or that they “can set the town on fire”. We also know from Ellis’ lore biography on the Left 4 Dead blog site that “He’ll do anything to impress his new friends”, so most of his stories should be taken with a grain of salt or two as he is likely just trying to make light of their dire situation. Though, most of them are within reason for what these characters are capable of, so using some of them as supporting evidence should be fine.

What the hell is up with the bullet animations?

This is definitely a weird one that needs to be directly talked about, as this is present in every game in their series, including remasters.

Within gameplay specifically, bullets fired at Joel, Ellie and Abby appear to be multiple frames, so they can be dodged and calculated. But when you go frame by frame and pay attention, you’ll probably notice that where the gun is being aimed sparks will fly or the ground will get thrown up before the actual visible projectile is seen. We spent a good amount of time discussing this and a few points were brought up. Firstly, you could potentially argue that what we’re seeing is a smoke trail left behind by the bullet but this would be inaccurate with how guns in real life operate. As what we see are smooth straight lines, rather than puffy clouds that rise up and dissipate. You can also argue that this is an animation error, though what immediately comes to mind is that this is just how it’s animated in every version of each game, so seemingly it should be on purpose.

In the end, it’s rather difficult to decide here, so we are going to go a safer route and just say that these should likely be taken with a grain of salt.

Bullet-Proof Humans?

For a matchup that's semi-grounded like this where characters are known for using a plethora of firearms, it's usually a common question on if a certain character is scaling a bit higher than the other, would that mean they're able to tank gunfire from their opponent. We’re going to quickly address some arguments for and against this;

In Favor:

The main point in favor is that energy is still energy. Piercing objects still need a sufficient amount of force in order to damage something, I.E. a titanium wall would not be affected by a human with a knife. So while Bill, Joel and Rick are still threatened by guns in their universes, this would just mean that these guns are more powerful than they are physically and scale above their feats of durability, as there would just be no other way they’d be able to harm and kill them.

Against:

On the other side of the coin, its clear that everyone here has surprising levels of superhuman durability, there is ultimately a difference between blunt force and piercing force and having Bill or Joel tank a super big explosion but also have them susceptible to a gunshot would not contradict each other. They are all still threatened by regular guns, knives and all sorts of sharp objects in their worlds and it’s important to keep in mind what actually happens in real life. Humans all throughout history, even in its earliest of times have used weapons to take down much, much stronger and tougher things than themselves. Early humans were able to hunt mammoths to extinction with rudimentary weapons like spears and arrows. So while some of today’s combatants are clearly tougher than others, it would be a bit silly to say they are unable to be harmed by even their weaker opponents, especially when we have direct proof to argue against it.

At the end of the day, nobody working on this blog is convinced that anyone here is realistically bullet-proof as there is just too much working against the idea. While each combatant here today has shown that they have the endurance shrug off being shot, it would be a bit disingenuous to argue Bill or Rick would just eat a rifle blast to the face. Guns do very clearly still threaten them within their actual stories and instances of them being shot in vital areas, like the head or heart, but keep pushing forward can easily just be chalked up to gameplay mechanics.

Scaling to people they’ve never met?

While Bill is a bit easier to explain away, being that the whole L4D cast can fight the same specials, this topic is something that really applies to everyone here.

Basically, these aren't universes where human characters are going to be portrayed as immensely above each other. Nobody, other than the enemies they fight, are enhanced in any sort of physical way in these stories and you're not going to have cases of someone getting “speed blitzed” or “one-tapped” by anyone as if it were a Mahvel comic book or fuckin’ Dragon Ball, where there are very clear tiering systems between characters. While of course, some characters are portrayed as stronger or tougher than others, it's never to a degree where they cannot fight or kill each other. Even just given how consistent these feats are between characters, even ones that Rick, Joel and Bill never directly meet, it’s not unreasonable to say they’re capable of similar, if not just the same even if the numbers are slightly higher, especially since they just do similar things to begin with.

But for more direct showings, it's much of the same logic as Bill when it comes to Joel and Rick. Every survivor in The Last of Us is capable of trading blows with a Clicker or a Bloater and everyone in The Walking Dead can fight Walkers and the variants, which are reanimated humans infected by the same virus. In TWD's case there are also a few more things to mention. Most characters within the comics part of the franchise are (were) playable in Road to Survival and can fight each other in its pvp gameplay, there's also an interview with Robert Kirkman about the development of Telltale's 3rd season of Walking Dead. Where he says he was really pushing for Clementine and Negan to have a fight, in order to explain Negan's scar. Giving evidence that these characters are just relative to each other, despite them having never directly met.

Cross Scaling The Walking Dead

While this doesn't really affect anything here, it's probably important to address this to try to avoid any misconceptions. (Sort of a bonus thing)

While Rick Grimes himself exists in both the comic and tv show universes, this doesn't apply to every character. The best examples for this are gonna be Daryl Dixon and Clementine, as they are exclusive to the AMC and comics universes respectively. You can argue to scale Clementine to the comic book version of Rick Grimes but you cannot scale her to the AMC version, as she just flat out doesn't exist in that universe with the reverse going for Daryl. There has also been no clear interest seen from AMC to adapt Telltale characters into the show universe, Robert Kirkman has gone on record a few times saying that he’d never wanna bring Daryl into the comics, as he’d feel as if he was stealing someone else's work (and AMC just straight up won't let him lol). Which would likely also mean Clementine or Lee’s chances of being adapted into the show are pretty slim.

So with all that said, characters in the same vein as Daryl can only be scaled to tv show feats and Clementine with characters like her can only be scaled to comic or Telltale feats.

Verdict

Strength

Starting off with muscle, going off of their lower ends, they’re all reasonably close to each other's level. Going off of vibes, one would just naturally think Joel is a bit more of a beef cake compared to Rick and Bill but unsurprisingly each series has no shortage of street to wall level feats. While you can get into the nitty gritty and argue some get further into it than others, it’s nothing to suggest anyone is just one shotting each other as long as you’re just focusing on the smaller stuff.

Where their higher ends are concerned though, Bill is definitely the strongest of the group but it’s not to the degree that you may think. Characters  being able to survive a gas station exploding is absolutely nuts, coming in at a whopping 574 tons of TNT at its best, leagues above anything reasonable for Rick and Joel to scale to. There's just issues with Bill scaling to the full yield of the gas truck and gas station exploding. The gas truck just outright kills them if they're close enough and for the other feat, the gas pumps exploding are what puts them in the downed state, the entire station exploding is what kills them. Some of the stronger infected can survive the explosions point blank, specifically Tanks and Witches but these are infected that are portrayed as immensely stronger than the survivors. Witches down them immediately as soon as they touch them and Tanks take an insane amount of time to kill with melee weapons in game, and it doesn’t help that in the realism mode, the survivors die outright as soon as these infected hit them. While you can argue they can eat hits from Tanks in the gameplay of other difficulties, when a Tank hits Bill ONCE in the comics, he's crippled and cannot get up. Even in Dead by Daylight’s tome lore, a Tank almost kills Bill immediately just by grabbing him and the other 3 survivors need to jump it to get it off him. So in the end, you can likely only argue for severe down scaling, although even this is probably gonna be a hard sell to some. The survivors are still shown to be able to deal physical damage to these things but by how much they should down scale will vary from person to person. Even assuming something like a 9x gap between the Left 4 Dead crew and boss infected, that’d still get Bill and the others around 63 tons of TNT at bare minimum, as long as we’re going with the highest interpretation of the gas station feat. Within more reasonable ends though, Bill is still the strongest here. Mostly thanks to propane tank explosions. We specifically have Bill surviving a few of them at 0.4 tons of TNT, but could theoretically get higher if one were to gather more propane tanks somehow.

There is a fair bit of back and forth between Rick and Joel however, though Rick can be pushed a bit higher ranging from 0.03 to 0.1 tons of TNT, especially with the strength buffs from Road to Survival. This isn't necessarily anything insurmountable for Joel to be completely fair though, as he has shown he can beat the shit out of Bloaters in bare knuckle fights, which scale to 0.01 tons of TNT, and some survivors that Ellie can murder can take these same explosives. So mix that with some good ol’ natural adrenaline and that certain mods in No Return can give him a solid 2x boost in strength, he can certainly hang in there against Officer Friendly in fisticuffs. Unfortunately for both of them though, engaging in a bare knuckle brawl against Bill might not end so well for them, just given the insanely large gap thanks to the gas station feat but even at lower ends he still holds a notable edge in ass whooping.

So while Joel and Rick are hanging around each other's level with a considerable edge for Rick, this category is just a clear cut advantage for William “Bill” Overbeck due to his high end arguments.

Speed

In a gunfight like this, it’s important to know who’s gonna be quicker on the draw.

Unlike strength and durability, Bill is drawing the shorter straw here. He can certainly react to things moving at superhuman and subsonic speeds, and is technically able to run in tandem with gunfire but Left 4 Dead has nothing notable or reasonable outside of that speed wise. Compare this to the more consistent subsonic and bullet timing feats with The Last of Us and The Walking Dead, Bill is just simply being out sped here. Not even Dead by Daylight is particularly helpful here, as its higher speed feats come from The Singularity, a character that is hard to argue that anyone fully scales to, if at all. Admittedly, the bullet feats in the gameplay for Last of Us can be fairly questioned, but there’s still the tv show at worst. Which gives scaling to much more blatant bullet timing feats from Stalkers, at much, much closer ranges than even the Singularity feat, getting a little over Mach 1 and supporting the calculations we have for the games. Making it nicely, consistent.

Joel also potentially has the best travel speed of the group, if you compare him to Ellie managing to keep a head of a truck in the show and if you buy the in-game bullets, Joel would actually have a slight edge over Rick and Bill in terms of subsonic ends with scaling to Abby’s Mach 0.8 (274 m/s) feat. However, The Walking Dead has the most consistency and the higher results in the end. Scaling to Daryl Dixon, Rick’s subsonic ends can get up to 151 m/s, not terribly different from Joel off rip and where their middle and higher ends are concerned, Rick is taking a notable lead. The tv show does grant Joel and others a solid Mach 1 feat but at absolute best, Abby’s bullet timing feat can get up to Mach 1.3, only matching the lowest end of Lee Everett’s bolt dodging which can give Rick a 10x speed advantage at its highest interpretation. Even if you weren’t to buy Rick being comparable to Lee, Rick has just directly shown to be able to keep up and out speed Jesus in both canons, who reacted to and moved out of the way of assault rifle fire at Mach 5.2 so Rick is just faster than Joel by a decent amount no matter what. With this also being supported by Beta straight up out speeding Jesus in a fight, who himself caught smoke from Negan and Michonne. Unfortunately, Bill is just struggling for solid mach speed scaling and can’t really keep pace with either Joel or Rick. We could argue for tandem movement with explosions, but everyone here technically has that and none are particularly great on their own. None of them are purposeful dodging and it would be a little disingenuous to argue these as buffs. Even if we were, characters in The Last of Us can move notably faster in comparison to their explosions than anyone in Left 4 Dead can and in the end, are unlikely to match Rick’s high ends.

With that said, it’s clear that Rick Grimes has the most solid, consistent and highest ends for speed to win over this category.

Endurance

You can be as strong and fast as you want, but it doesn't matter if you can’t deal with the pain of a zombie apocalypse.

Naturally, these are some tough characters who aren't gonna let some flesh wounds keep them out of the fight. However, Joel is drawing the shorter straw this time. Not for a lack of trying, Joel is capable of shrugging off gunshots and proves he’s still a threat even when recovering from the rebar incident but Rick and Bill tend to take similar, even greater punishment and still keep pushing forward. It’s honestly a bit of a toss up on who has the edge here between them. Rick is down right brutal, beating people til his hand breaks, powering through cutting off his own hand… and the bridge moment is just nuts. Pulling himself off rebar, fighting off a horde and proceeding to blow himself up.. And is still kicking by the end of it all. Though, as with Joel, Bill seems to be able to take similar amounts of punishment and shakes it off a bit easier than Rick does. It should be kept in mind that while Rick did survive all of that shit during the bridge incident, he did get medical treatment not that long after from the CRM, meanwhile Bill just needs some motivation to keep trucking. Explosions, gunshots, getting ripped into by Witches or Hunters, Bill can pull through all of it and keep fighting just as he did before. While Rick was still very clearly struggling to keep going, even if it is still incredibly impressive.

In the end, while Rick and Joel are insanely tenacious and earn the title of survivors, William “Bill” Overbeck has them beat once again.

Ingenuity

Surviving the apocalypse isn’t always about physical prowess, creativity is just as important as pure muscle.

All three of these guys have put their brains to the test to come up with game winning strategies and have used the very infected they fight to lend them a hand in certain ways. But when it comes to utilizing their environment and tools on hand to gain an advantage though, some have it clearly better than others. Bill is certainly the one who sticks out as the weak link here, while he does have his moments and his quick thinking has saved his group a few times, we never really see anything comparable to the others in terms of innovation. Both Rick and Joel have a plethora of instances upgrading their gear to improve its effectiveness and lethality, but it’s Joel who not only does it by far more consistently, but more importantly, on the fly and in the heat of a fight. Rick can, and has modified his weapons in a few video games like Road to Survival and Onslaught, but it’s always a process that Rick needs a good bit of time to do, nor has he ever done something like that in the middle of a firefight like Joel. This is an important piece of the debate because if the situation were to occur where ammo is low or outright depleted, Joel’s craftiness would give him the leg up. Embracing his inner Frank West and being able to replenish parts of his arsenal by himself or just have more on hand by scavenging around his surroundings if the situation arises, while Bill and Rick are stuck with just what they have on hand. This is only made more clear when No Return mods come into play, giving Joel ways to restore broken weapons and gain extra scrap to craft with. It's also worth pointing out that Joel has a consistent trend of setting up traps for enemies on the fly as well, which is just something we've never seen from Bill and there’s only a couple rare cases from Rick, let alone as quickly and on the spot as Joel does it.

Not without some competition, Joel Miller is taking this category thanks to his on-the-fly crafting abilities and creativity.

Gear and Abilities

To survive the zombie apocalypse not only takes grit, but an armies’ worth of fire power.

Surprisingly (Or maybe not), Joel, Bill and Rick match each other in a lot of ways here. Sniper rifles for long ranged precision, smoke grenades for cover, reliable vehicles, explosives to keep each other at bay and a variety of melee weapons for when things get up close and personal. Dead by Daylight and Walking Dead: Destines respectively give Bill and Rick ways to sense where their enemies are located, similar to Joel’s listen mode. While aura in Dead by Daylight can be used more consistently through perks like Object of Obsession and Rick’s “instinct” can be used on more than just enemies and items, ultimately they’re gonna be used for the same purpose here and would naturally just cancel out. On the topic of Dead by Daylight, it does technically give Bill a larger pool of things to pull from than Rick or Joel, but it’s important to keep in mind that most of them require specific circumstances to activate and hardly any of them are useful in a direct combat scenario with no preptime. (Sorry Ash Mains, MoM ain’t clutching it this time).

As far as healing up after taking a hit goes, Joel is a bit out classed. Health kits are handy and food can help out in a pinch, but these are things Rick and Bill have as well, along with just so much more. Specifically Road to Survival’s adrenaline rushes and Dead by Daylight’s perks essentially give Rick and Bill an unrestricted limit to how many times they can heal up if need be. Perks like Self-Care and Botany Knowledge allow Bill to heal himself whenever he wants without the aid of any equipment and adrenaline in a few Walking Dead video games do much of the same. However, adrenaline for Rick is a much faster method of healing, doing so practically immediately, while any Dead by Daylight player will tell you how much of a pain Self-Care using Claudettes are. Another edge for Rick is that adrenaline rushes not only heal him but they grant buffs as well, such as higher damage, crits, defense amps, etc. Bill can replicate that somewhat similarly with an adrenaline syringe, but this is still much much more limited in comparison.

Weaponry is another story, as Bill most definitely has the most raw firepower of the three with the grenade launcher alone. Joel does have a similarly sized arsenal in comparison to Bill but thanks to Joel’s knack for upgrading and modifying his arsenal, it’s likely a tad more varied. Rick’s on the other hand is the largest, which isn't too surprising given how much more media he has to work with. Though while Bill has the most direct firepower, Joel and Rick’s arsenals consist of more tricky selections. Joel being able to slow his perceptions down to a crawl after a successful shot could give him a massive edge in a quick draw scenario and like Rick, while a bit more limited in comparison has more ways to buff himself up. Overall though, Rick’s arsenal, while being larger also just has more incapacitation and defensive options. If breathed in, or even making skin contact, nerve and tear gas can be incredibly dangerous. Flashbangs could disorient Bill and Joel as we have direct showings of them being susceptible to them, leaving them wide open for Rick to take advantage. Bill has shown he can power through nitrous oxide, but knockout gases aren’t really made of the same chemicals, so Bill being able to resist them is iffy at best. Unlike Bill, Joel does have a slick direct counter to this actually, being the gas mask. Giving him an option to get out of there and/or keep fighting while Bill would be forced to hold his breath and get out of there.

Now onto another thing that's important to discuss… their defensive options. This is where Joel is at a glaring disadvantage. Rick and Bill both have bullet-proof armors, while Joel has… some t-shirts? While they do look nice on him, that’s hardly anything that’s gonna help in a gunfight. In his defense though, Bill’s armor is very minimal, being only a vest. This still means Joel would have to be more cautious of where he aims with certain guns, while Bill or Rick can just shoot him wherever. On that note, Rick has two sets of full body armor complete with helmets and shields, granting him the best defense of the group. It is important to remember that these things don't make them invincible though, body armor can, and will degrade the more it is hit. So regardless, nobody here can really afford to waste time. Especially since Joel, yet again, has an answer to this while not necessarily being protected himself. His armor piercing rounds and explosive arrows have made short work of body armors before, giving him another surprising advantage in this fight, but would mean he’d have to lean on specific weapons.

This was a close one to call. Everyone can match or counter each other in several ways but Rick Grimes tends to have the better kit and capabilities.

Skill

When it comes down to who is the most skilled between the three, we’re specifically focusing on combat experience, hand to hand skills and firearm proficiency.

In terms of experience, Bill is by far the least experienced out of the group here. While spending a couple years in the Vietnam War and holding onto those perishable skills over decades is certainly nothing to scoff at, Rick and Joel have just simply done more for much longer periods of time than him. Not only do both of them have vastly longer histories of fighting human opponents, Joel has certainly been through his apocalypse the longest, going on for twenty years by his own account while Rick has been doing it for about thirteen years in counting… and Bill only survived his for a couple weeks. Rick was a cop for about ten years before his apocalypse however, which would technically give him a slight leg up over Joel, especially considering Rick is still surviving in the tv show universe while Joel is… well dead. But in truth, it’s revealed in the comics that Rick hardly ever saw action as a sheriff's deputy, while this isn’t clear in the tv show, it is sorta insinuated within the first episode and this is really all we have to go on for Rick’s time as a cop. Bill does clearly deal with the most visually intimidating infected but even during Bill’s few week stint during the outbreak, specials like Tanks and Boomers were only introduced to him after 2 weeks into it. While things like Clickers and Bloaters were basically always present throughout Joel’s 20 year journey, and The Walking Dead has spent the good part of the last few years building up their Wildfire Variants, with characters like Rick, Maggie and Daryl adapting to them practically immediately. So in the end, Joel takes a considerable edge in experience itself.

When it comes to actual combat however and ignoring the strength difference, it is a much different story. Joel, obviously, has no confirmed training of any sort aside from just natural experience with firearms. Rick of course was a trained police officer and is later heavily trained by the CRM, compared to Bill’s military training. In terms of martial arts, Rick’s police training could mean he knows some styles that Bill isn’t trained in like: Judo, Krav Maga and Kali-Silat, while also being familiar with the ones Bill is. Potentially giving him an edge in a close quarters fight, especially since we do actually see cases of Rick actually demonstrating some of these unlike Bill. It also helps that while in the CRM, Rick has been trained by and has defeated Vietnam vets before, such as Beale and was actually in the CRM longer than Bill served in Vietnam, being around 8 years in total. Joel is a bit of a wild card here though, as while he has no training himself, he has fought plenty of people who do and often ends up brutalizing them. So this would at least suggest Joel isn’t a sitting duck in a bare knuckle brawl here. Where things start to turn severely into Rick’s favor however is with aim. While everyone here is capable of snagging a headshot, Rick takes this much further than the others. Not only has Rick demonstrated talent with a larger variety of firearms, his aim is so precise he’s capable of shooting off individual fingers off of Gareth in the show from a considerable distance. With this being backed up by Andrea shooting off people’s ears in the comics, who Rick had a hand in training. Even on death’s door, Rick is still capable of scoring continuous head shots back to back despite severe blood loss. Joel has shown some impressive aim with sniper rifles in the show and is probably more impressive than anything we see directly from Bill, Rick is doing similar things with a revolver. To add to that, while Joel does technically have more experience overall, Rick engages in much grander scale events than either him or Bill consistently. Having led the charge himself in three separate post-apocalyptic wars, winning all of them and is ultimately considered to be responsible for humanity taking the necessary steps forward into reclaiming the world from the undead. Because he either murdered or took out people that threatened the idea, like Dwight and Negan.

Another thing that’s worth going over is brutality and ruthlessness. As this is a very key part of Joel and Rick as characters. Yet again, Bill is coming up short here. While he has some cold moments and can be vicious when the time calls, Rick and Joel are on a completely different level. To the point where it’s a hard call on who is more ruthless between the two. Rick has bitten people’s throats out on more than one occasion and the time he butchered that group of cannibals (While threatening to eat them), Joel has done pretty comparable things, namely the time he tortured David’s men or in certain kill animations, jamming arrows through people's throats. You can go back and forth for a while on this specific part, but in the end, neither is really doing anything out of character for the other.

So with everything laid out, while nobody is much of a slouch in this area, we’re giving this category overall to Rick Grimes

Virus Warfare

This part is mostly for fun. As it’s sorta out of character for Rick and Bill to outright choose this tactic in a fight, while Joel’s is just sorta unlikely as any infected he could throw at them, would more than likely just get capped immediately. But, let’s just ignore that and go with a hypothetical. If all three of these viruses were to come in contact with each other, which would be able to overpower the others and take the host for itself?

We know in real life that viruses will “fight” against each other for their spot within a host, especially since we know for a fact that each of the viruses here reside within the brain, so naturally they would try to compete. For starters, the Green Flu clearly produces the more impressive infected and specials, but Wildfire isn’t exactly coming up short in that department either. While it’s not producing anything on the level of a Tank, Wildfire variants are certainly comparable to most other Green Flu specials. Green Flu is by far a more aggressive sickness on the other hand though, this is just a given by how all of Left 4 Dead’s zombies act. More so 28 Days Later and less Night of the Living Dead. But what makes things interesting here, is just how hard Wildfire is to get rid of. The only known treatment for it on record is massive amounts of radiation, as said in Fear the Walking Dead but not even that will fully get rid of the virus and while some may argue Wildfire just lays dormant in its host until death, it’s proven in real life that even dormant viruses will defend themselves against invaders. Wildfire is also most certainly the more fast acting of the two considering their best showings. With Carol succumbing to the virus within seconds of dying in the comics, while the fastest on record for Green Flu is around five minutes, if we take L4D’s wall writings at face value. So what we’re suggesting here is that Rick and Bill could theoretically be protected from each other's viruses.. Thanks to their own viruses. With Green Flu being so much more aggressive but Wildfire being immensely stubborn, it’s hard to really tell if either of them could successfully get rid of the other, and are ultimately more likely to mutate together given enough time. This is where Cordyceps comes in. Obviously, Corecypse is a fungal infection, and cannot be affected by typical viruses that target people. Wildfire and Green Flu cannot even overtake animals, let alone plants or fungi. This basically gives Corecypse a free out, being able to completely ignore Wildfire and Green Flu and take over the brain for itself and turn whatever poor fuck is in this situation into one of the Last of Us’ monsters.

So with that, we think Cordyceps is actually the more deadly infection in this scenario, being able to totally ignore Wildfire and the Green Flu and not give them a chance to retaliate against it taking the host for itself.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the environment of these respective apocalypse reflects their advantages. Bill takes physical stats and endurance due to the overwhelming power of the dead in his world, Joel takes ingenuity due to the long lasting survival of the fittest world he comes from, and Rick takes gear due to his greater overall quality of options available. And of course there’s the pure vs stuff with speed going to Rick due to having the best feats. Overall, these categories seem relatively even, but Rick’s speed advantage is easily the most valuable - in a gun fight where anyone can die to a single shot, being the fastest shot is a key advantage, more valuable than Bill’s endurance or Joel’s ingenuity.

What arguably matters most though is the difference in their mindsets and experiences with the overwhelming odds of an infected apocalypse. Our 3rd place Bill Overbeck was an old veteran who was thrust into an extremely dangerous change in the world and had to become a badass once again for it. Bill has a lot going for him. He's definitely the strongest of the three no matter how you cut it, even if you don't buy them scaling to the gas station feat (which admittedly we’re kinda growing iffy on). He's got army training, obviously so he's not lacking in skill by any means and his arsenal is probably the most outwardly destructive. But what's holding him back is poor speed scaling honestly. It's doubtful that anyone should really scale to the Singularity feat in dbd, so without that Bill is capping at 74 m/s which is a few hundred mph, and even that is kinda generous. You can try to argue that Bill could try to bull rush Rick or Joel, that'd just make him an easier target for two dudes blitzing his ass off.

Our 2nd place Joel Miller was an average father who lost everything and had to become an absolute monster to survive. Joel is a wild card here. He's faster than Bill by a significant amount and despite having no training himself, he has consistently beat the fuck out of people who do. So we'd argue Bill and Rick's training wouldn't be an insurmountable disadvantage for him and on that point, while Bill and Rick do have bullet proof armor... Joel has armor piercing rounds and his explosive arrows just rip right through that in game. He also has really insane aim feats in the show, so he'd just have no problem capping Bill off rip. Joel is also just clearly the most experienced dude here in general, although Rick will probably surpass that in the future.

And our 1st place winner Rick Grimes was a top tier cop who through it all maintained his leadership in trying times. Out of these three, Rick was the only one who successfully managed to rebuild the world from its ashes. Rick being the fastest alone should just solidify him winning. He has prior experience in quick draw scenarios and his aim is by far the best. Rick has been trained by Vietnam vets in The Ones Who Live, so Bill isn't doing anything he doesn't know (it's probably worth noting that Rick was in the CRM longer than Bill was in Vietnam) on top of being a trained police officer, which has their own set of training which does include various martial arts. He's decently stronger than Joel but Rick definitely isn't winning a fist fight with Bill if you buy the l4d high ends but he just doesn't need to resort to that. Rick's arsenal is also by far the largest and the most versatile, stuff like tasers, knock out grenades and nerve gas kinda just neg the idea of someone trying to bull rush him. Rick also having multiple sets of bullet proof body armor that cover his whole body is also just an insane edge in general. While Joel is technically more experienced than Rick in terms of time, Rick definitely does more in general. Fighting in post apocalyptic wars and rebuilding society with blood stained hands.

While Bill and Joel would certainly give the hero of The Walking Dead a run for his money, it's clear in the end who would be the last man left walking. The winner is Rick Grimes.

Next Time?

We are sorry to say for those who were looking forward to Lelouch vs Char that it has been canceled. Bang himself got roped up in two G1 comic blogs so he couldn’t oversee it as much, and motivation was lost over time to work on it due to real life reasons or lack of interest in the idea over time. These things tend to happen to any blog, we’re still going to keep going with the usual releases and hope to get back on schedule now that Simon vs Kyle is over, so returning to the main blog track, we’re down to three of some of the craziest and cosmic blogs…

Comments

  1. Honestly wasn’t expecting a Rick win, but I’m very happy because I’ve been watching TWD recently and enjoying it.

By the way, what happened to Miraak vs Deathwing and Reaper vs US Agent?
